CHANGES ON THE HORIZON FOR THE GOP -- Just A Minute for Wednesday 110215

Things continue to go missing here in the ‘cockpit.’

I could have sworn I wrote this message earlier… and just forgot where I put it… but there’s no evidence it’s here or been sent.

            So we’ll just start over.

What caught my attention today was the actions Senator Lugar – Republican from Indianapolis – who has been serving in the Senate for six terms… that’s 36 years. That’s a *long* time to serve.  Too long in my book…

Yes you’re correct in noting Senator Thurmond was doing the same thing. And I respond noting that Sen. Byrd of WV did the same thing… and so did – or at least he aimed that way – Sen. Harry F. Byrd of Virginia… who the newspapers loved to call the “apple-cheeked, apple grower from Winchester, Virginia” – yes he served too long – in my view also.

Why do I think it’s too long?  I look at the example of Geo. Washington.  He was beseeched by his soldiers and associates who knew him for years to allow himself to be made ruler – as in “King” of the United States.  He absolutely would not hear to it… and insisted that he be allowed to resign at the end of his second term.

Why?  Because he grew too far away from the people he served.  He needed to be back in Northern Virginia on the banks of the Potomac to see how the economy was growing and how the planters were mowing or doing whatever they needed to do. He kept the touch of the ‘common people’ – at least that’s the way I look at it. Despite the improvements in travel and communications these days I think to be able to size-up the situation and be a good leader one has to be ‘on the ground.’  George S. Patton was that kind of General and his men were loyal and good fighters.

I know my knowledge of history is not as expansive as a college professor who has been lecturing on the same lines year after year – and doing research etc.  But there’s little doubt in my mind we would not be in the bind we are in now if we had retained the limited term of the Senate and had those men (and women) attuned – not to the ‘professional politician’ into which we have drifted. But when viewed up close.. American agriculture is certainly more productive and prosperous when you have at least some check on unbridled internalization… and doing the same thing over and over in the same way without opportunity or whatever for improvement.

Well…I’d better quit for today.  Thanks for putting up with my ramblings through the brambles.

Lord willing we’ll be with you again tomorrow.

“JUST A MINUTE”

CHANGES ON THE HORIZON FOR THE GOP

Just a Minute: - Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a six term Senator drinking of the cup invincibility -- convinces himself he’s not just a senator from Indiana. But he’d be wise to re-check his retirement plans. --- Utah’s former – Senator -- Bob Bennett can give him a Tea Party earful. Indiana Democrats hope he’ll jist “fuggedabout” it.

Indiana’s Gov. Mitch Daniels, also gives Indiana voters encouraging signs – looking for a standard bearer. Daniels, Bush’s former Budget Director – knows Washington and handles himself well.

The 2012 presidential nomination includes a big strong string – not all declared -- including: Romney, Huckabee, Gingrich, Pawlenty, Palin, the senior Paul, 2nd time victor of the CEPAC straw poll; plus Don Trump, Arkansas retiring Governor Haley Barber and Senator John Thune from Dakota. This interval of two years before the rematch will be a busy season.

It’ll probably go by like an arrow shot from the bow and we’ll be back in the middle of a serious race.

May the Lord help us and give us HIS wisdom.
