It was a difficult day to warm up…
Yesterday I tried to convince myself -- as I took “Emma” [our faithful watchdog] for a walk – that it was a third warm and springlike day… but the cold east wind that kept stealing inside my jacket to modify my warmth… and its cousin wanting to sneak down my neck to make me uncomfortably chilly.
I buttoned the sleeve cuffs – and drew the thin jacket a bit tighter… while pulling down my nice snugly warm beret – but it was to no avail. Winter is still here… Spring has not yet stirred. Sometimes in January we have enough warm days for the jonquils and daffodils to take a flyer and poke their lovely bits of sunshine out through the leaves and mulch to see if the evasive Mr. Groundhog is about. But no luck on yesterday.
We’re supposed to get the leavings of a major snow and ice event that will cause the upper mid-west to chill out again. But they don’t shiver … they have ice sludge for blood… or their interior warming system convinces them it is so. So… we will have to note especially if sunny enough today for Puxatawny Phil to see his shadow… or must we endure six more weeks of winter? I suspect the latter – for somewhere back in the beginning of Fall I recall a forecast for an unusually cold and snowy winter… and I would be of a mind the folks in the Great Lakes… plus
Well… it’s either that or worry about the fruit buds coming out too early or something else amiss… I verily think we shall soon be getting cold reports the sap run from the sugar maples will be extraordinary…
So… here I sit consulting the Almanac and yawning… and deciding I would be a lot better off sleeping late tomorrow. G’nite everybody.
Cordially, IN HIM
Jack
