SHORTLY THE AIR WILL ABOUND WITH THE STUFF -- Just a Minute Radio for Tuesday 100907

Great to have you with us on this Tuesday that seems to have ‘snuck’ up in the middle of the nicht.

Somehow these long weekends – Monday holidays, manage to upset my inner calendar…my wife’s too.  BOTH of us forgot to take our morning handful of vitamins, minerals and medicines because we were intent on getting up early to make an early Monday prayer meeting… which appointment comes for my bride the first Monday of each month…

It seems to be the phenomena that new or unusual stuff pushes out the old usual stuff – especially when age or something constricts the memory a bit. I’m getting worse and worse on names… people I’ve known for years… just saw them yesterday or this morning… and can’t pull up the name out of my sieve-like mental bin.  It gets downright embarrassing.

However… doctors – and others who profess to know, say that’s not unexpected… it’s just one of the little quirks that comes along with the passing years.  Hmmm… how do they know… they’ve never been this old? Who does the research on this stuff anyway? – I seem to have forgotten? (L)

Nevermind… Today’s JUST A MINUTE deals primarily with the speech I happened to waste part of Monday afternoon watching on the boob-tube. (I’m the boob for wasting my time.)  Very little that could be called new. Nothing of a policy nature and only trappings of being the President… and those affected by the ‘campaign mode’ which the President adopts as his interest in swinging the windsock around to a different quarter since the current breeze does not seem to be at his back but rather a somewhat stiff headwind.

I think Mr. O is making progress on his golf game.  I just haven’t noticed anything else worth remarking about. Even the Blagojevich trial apparently has a blanket thrown over it for the week.  Funny how the MSM media’s interest waxes and wanes….Not as regularly as the moon, but certainly there is more light and less light from time to time… and now a new group of White House “kiss and tell” or “leave and tell” books – too many to have any one make much of an impact at this point.  How many times does the headline “XXX’s  Popularity Numbers Hit New Low!” sell more papers, or magazines or lift TV ratings?

And now that we have this raft of ‘social’ media… Facebook, Twitter, and a chickenhouse full of others… including the blogs… Too many to keep score by.  Even football with it’s over-detailed coverage of how many milkshakes the fullback drank last weekend… begins to lose luster – but I hear myself sounding like CBS’s Mr. Curmudgeon. I guess it’s too long in the heat – maybe the cooler Fall breezes will return sanity to this hemisphere as we draw on toward Halloween. (J)

“JUST A MINUTE”

SHORTLY THE AIR WILL ABOUND WITH THE STUFF

Just a Minute: -- DEMIGOG – If you’re not exactly sure what it means here’s an online definition: A leader who obtains power by means of impassioned appeals to the emotions and prejudices of the populace.

If you caught even a bit of President Obama’s pitch to the labor union folk in Milwaukee on labor-day, you got a full gallon Grade A example of demagoguery in action. He skillfully set up his straw man which he could verbally knock around his patented campaign-speech style. He led them by the nose to heavy hand-clapping and cheering so much so that even I was embarrassed since I am an unwilling labor recruit -- having been press-ganged into the Writer’s Guild of America – east some years back by a CBS contract stipulating if you didn’t join you didn’t make a sale.

So now we have a close-up sample at what our taxpayer subsidized Air-Force One campaigner intends to clamp upon the voters up ‘till November second.  Ear-plugs anyone? Or perhaps a grain or two of salt?  My personal preference is Pepto-Bismol – I find it very good against nausea.

¨      I’m Jack Buttram.
