HOW TO GET MORE OLYMPIC MEDALS - Just A Minute Radio -- for Monday March 01 2010

            Hello again –

Another month… and it’s come in cold… so I guess it’s a *cold* lion – which may or may not go out like a lamb.

Ordinarily it’s a month for doing all the things you promised you would do to the garden and the trees before Spring rolls around… and now you don’t know if you’re up to it or not.  Better have a conference with the head gardener… if she’s finished grocery shopping for the week. (J)

Today’s JUST A MINUTE is just one of those ‘venting’ days that comes along after too much cabin-fever.  We watched as much snow skiing and ice skating and whatever else those cool Canadians came up with … and when it was all over I couldn’t manage to sort out “who won.”  I don’t think it was anyone!  The opening ceremony was an embarrassment to the hydraulic engineers who devised that main show at the very beginning… and then one of the booms that was to hold a flaring torch couldn’t get past it’s stuck closed doors… so they had to go with three instead of four… (which would have been OK… if the media people hadn’t told us there were SUPPOSED to be four… Oh well.. better luck next time.

All told, it was still spectacular… and I’m continually amazed at the risks taken on the downhill slopes.  There was a cloud over the opening exercises because of the accidental death of one of the luge contestants – terrible thing to happen and the finger pointing will go on for a long time.

I wonder if the ancient Greeks would approve of what’s being done to the traditions they started… although I don’t think they had winter events…?  I am happy to see something that should help our universal fight against obesity… but I really think it’s aimed at the United States which apparently carries the most weight of the major nations on the Globe. Perhaps they -- the ancient Greeks – are just as glad not to be in the competition after all, and wonder how we managed to convolute such a straight forward occasion as track and field.

Well – so much for speculation.  We’re mounting an offense against the modern computer gremlins today… so we hope to be here on Wednesday.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

HOW TO GET MORE OLYMPIC MEDALS

Just a Minute: -- It’s crazy to have the media keeping track of which nation won the most medals in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

First off it wasn’t Vancouver – but Whistler, and various other venues.  Then every day last week there were new totals, by countries, of how many medals were garnered by a national team.

Well – la deed dah – Cayman Islands have few players… and no snow.  So what’s the point of keeping national scores.  Then even when there’s a natural competition like between Canada and the United States – how many Canadians play on the US team?  Or what about the USA vs. Russia? Russia used to be the USSR and all their troop of athletes were virtually employees of the State.  Where does that go in the record books?  Or … how does Jamaica match up with China?  It’s silly!

That’s not why the games were instituted anyway.  Canada spent roughly twice what the US spent in government support of their athletes… and got fewer medals… so -- what does that mean?  Nothing!
