WE'VE BEEN THROUGH WORSE -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 05-01-09

Howdy...

I’m writing a bit early this week because of a family health situation (brother-in-law in FL) that makes sticking by the TV etc… difficult – and no working portable that will handle what I need to do… so here’s a look at what’s in the air in our world presently.

John Adams, who was our second President – and in my judgment – far more fundamentally involved in the foundations of America than anyone besides George Washington – is an exceedingly interesting figure in our American History. I highly recommend the biography that came out several years ago by David McCullough – it’s a thick book – but borrow it from the Library and enjoy re-learning American history. He’s not perfect… but very interesting and teaching lessons for today!

Anyway… if you don’t have time for that, Google John Adams’ letters to Abigail (his wife) and read how near to disaster we came as a nation during the Convention in Philadelphia. Also the struggles he went through when he was sharing duties of representing America to France while Ben Franklin was our Ambassador. Finally the BIG ERROR he made in forcing through the Aliens and Sedition Act in which he put editors and others under threat of lock and key for speaking against the government. They were difficult days.

Thomas Jefferson… the third President, worked against his own boss – Adams – as V.P.  So if you think we’re going through tough times now… think again. Ultimately the two – who were nearly mortal enemies reconciled and their correspondence is fascinating in the years when they were both out of power… and they died on the same day – one in New England and one in Virginia. It’s an amazing story in our history I never get tired of re-examining. I wonder why I didn’t learn all that in High School? Oh well… I’m wiser now. (J)

Have a great week-end.

Cordially, IN HIM

 “JUST A MINUTE”

WE’VE BEEN THROUGH WORSE

JUST A MINUTE – If you’ve just come through a knothole – you’re thinking -- “If it’s all the same, I’d rather not do that again.”

Americans from Wall Street to Main Street, wonder: Where’s the American spirit that just after 9/11 caused us to unite and pull together? Why are we now hurling hurtful words at one another?

I just re-read John Adams’ letter to his wife Abigail written in Philadelphia just after the Constitutional Convention finally hammered out a document the majority ratified. His emotion is palpable as he exults with his wife about the joy of agreement, even though there were yet many bloody bumps in the road.

Today, in America – and in our local political scene right here in the Southeast – dark and divisive words are in the air.  Are we not able to review the sacrifice and efforts made by our forebears and forego animosity?

In Christ we have the foundation of liberty, not license; of honor, not raw power.  Success will only come with individual, spirit-lead effort. May God’s blessing be upon us as with those who have gone before.
