ONE AUTOCRAT LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER -- Just a Minute Radio for Monday 04-27-09

            Good Monday to ya!  Here we go for another weekly adventure…

 

            I don’t mean to sound rejoicing – it’s just that we can often get a bit down-in-the-dumps from even the folks on our side who seem to be so deadly serious *all the time* -- hardly stopping to take a breath. Yeah… at 77 I already know it’s serious business – I also know you can’t exist on soda-water and vinegar alone.

 

No question: The world is in terrible shape and getting worse. Crime is up I see, even the New York Times reports the Southern Baptist denomination has baptized fewer folks last year than in the year before… They put that in the same column about the subway fares skyrocketing soon … But the really important thing for Bible believers to keep before them is the BIG PICTURE.  The Lord is *still* on the throne… and HE will be in charge even ‘til HE comes back to rule and to reign over this world, which, by the way, is HIS -- HE made it.

 

            This weekend I happened to see the most recent gloom & doom book Christopher Hitchens has on the market from which he draws a comfortable living. It was in an airport newsstand. Thankfully I saw there were still a LOT of copies on the shelf – and not a very prominent shelf at that. They didn’t look to be “flying off” -- I took it as an encouraging sign. (You’ve got to look closely for them these days – otherwise they sail right by.)  I also happened to read of a pollster reporting the American people are “fed up” with both parties. So… I suppose we’re up to Mercutio’s famous line … “A plague on both your houses….”

 

            Well… it could be that – it also could be the emotion car salesmen often recognize as ‘buyers remorse’. When the buyer walks away from the seller’s stall saying “It is nothing… nothing… but when he gets out of earshot he  boasts…What a deal! Proverbs 20:14  Maybe voting for a king-sized dollop of CHANGE isn’t what we really had in mind.

 

            There’s a saying that probably describes most of us at one time or another: “Why pray, when you can worry!” Let’s get down-on-our-knees serious about praying for our nation and for its leaders.

JUST A MINUTE – What’s with all the furor over President Obama having his picture taken with Hugo Chavez?

          Well -- in Spanish it’s Ooo go… not Hugh Go. You drop the ‘h’ and go on to the next letter…And I know on the campaign trail you say you’ll do ‘whatever it takes’ go one up on your predecessor – and in Mr. Obama’s opinion it takes a lot.

          But what about all those who have suffered imprisonment even death, at the hands of Mr. Chavez or his good friend Fidel? Is the President going to fly Mrs. Pelosi and Harry Reid down to shake hands with political prisoners assuming the prisoners can be found?

          The Wall Street Journal points out autocrats always have a huge problem propping up their authority and legitimacy – so while for the Obama minions it’s just a photo op – for Chavez it’s a treasure. Being seen with the President of the Free World enhances his stature and disheartens his opposition… it’s in the same category of giving aid and comfort to our enemies.
