THE ROAD AHEAD HAS POTHOLES -- for Just A Minute Radio on Thursday 120315

They said you ought to cool your bonnet and wait for a bit.  

 

The scoreboard of pledged delegates hardly shifted much in the wake of what was thought to be a Romney win.  But a few sort of caustic remarks dropped here and there don’t seem to have cleared up the problems of beginning to coalesce about the leader. Apparently those words were torn out of the BSA handbook – but nonetheless the drug out race must continue.

 

I’ll bet more than even money the RNC will shortly make some moves to alter the racing rules so we don’t have to get drug through this knothole again. At least I HOPE so!  This is a tiresome and grinding down procedure. I’m wondering if this will not be a really dogged down dragged out race.  How can such an intense competition – not to mention the fundraising strain and effort go on and on and on. But that’s the way things are done by fiat. So… let’s change THAT system.

 

Meantime we have some other races to look at and every day it looks like September gets further and further away.  Yet we have a Couple of Conventions to go through. Back in the days before air conditioning we would not have put up with these shenanigans. But we grow up and we become adults don’t we… if we don’t die in the process.

 

Well – keep at it troops. Ultimately things will get better – and we know God IS in control of the outcome for the best! If it wasn’t for that assurance I don’t think the game would be worth the candle. But we CAN persevere and we do know the Lord has brought out a great result in all the ways when we acknowledge it’s His world and He is the one in charge… we don’t need to be afraid or concerned.

          Just a Minute: The rain is over and the winter is gone too, we hope. But Mr. Romney still has far more delegates than those trailing him.  Polling is NOT an *exact* science although most users think so. In fact it’s hard to get an accurate count even when people are voting for real, much less talking to an exit pollster.

          Matter of fact none of the three candidates are a close fit for the average Southern voter and that’s why you have seen some gaping attempts to make the costume fit. Nobody talks football, tells a good backwoods story or eats grits as part of their usual menu. And Romney, even trying to sound Southern, mistook hunting with a shotgun for a rifle.

          I made an error along with virtually all the pollsters including Karl Rove, Scott Rasmussen and Susan Estrich and just about everyone else in the prognosticating business. So cool your bonnet and know it’s gonna be a hot day in Tampa before we can nail down who’s gonna run against The President.

D'YA THANK WE'S ON OUR WAY TA TAMPA AWREDY? -- Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 1203134

Well – it appears the voting has conformed pretty much to what the Rasmussen polling has forecast – and Mr. Santorum’s surge has returned… giving him a continuing lap or two on before getting to the Convention in Tampa.

 

I heard the term ‘floor fight’ at the GOP Convention in Tampa mentioned on the lead-up yesterday… and perhaps that’s what it will come down to.  All things considered it is rather remarkable the three top vote getters at this stage in the voting are within a few votes of each other. What is really needed is some communication from the hinterlands telling the top three to disband the circular firing squad and concentrate their shots on the current President. Otherwise there will be *more blood on the floor* and the victor will be carried out on a stretcher to be revivified, hopefully, before his bleeding reaches the point of no return. Time for the healing balm to be applied.  I’d say the ‘seconds’ – the staff in each camp -- needs to get the leaders to look at the stakes for continuing to fire away.

 

The Audience has a role too.

 

Do you… Mr.& Mrs. or Miss – Do YOU want to be sitting on the sidelines dreading four more years of incompetence, deception and promises unfulfilled; being responsible for the terrible outpouring of bitterness your continued potshots and small spiritedness entails. Insist the guy carrying your banner be able to spread healing on the wounds and be endowed with a large enough vision to act for the good of the party and the people represented.

 

OK I suppose that is enough to carry us through the weekend. But I’ll do my best to be on scene through the weekend.

TOPPING OUT IN TUPELO -- Just A Minute Radio for Tuesday 120313

Hold on to your wigs folks… this is the most dynamically challenging political race I’ve ever looked into – (using Scott Rasmussen’s info posted on the WEB.)

 

As I was putting this together I had to keep checking because what I was putting on the screen was not familiar.  First thing was head to head Romney 46% Obama 43%. That’s only 3 points but up to now it’s been three points favoring the President: now it’s 3 points favoring the challenger! That’s a SIX point shift. You know that’s kicked the covers off the bed at the White House.

 

Rasmussen’s next line down shows Santorum trailing the President by six points head to head. That’s a six point shift too – only it’s a NEW leader.

 

Now the roads go in many different directions from here… but you’ll notice Mr. Gingrich isn’t mentioned in the top two. He said yesterday he had to win both Mississippi AND Alabama. And from the data at this moment -- it appears he won’t win either.

Now Michael Barone says: The lead in national polls has changed 11 times since August.

One constant factor in the 14 contests with exit polls is that Mitt Romney has tended to run best among high-income and high-education voters. His leading opponents -- Newt Gingrich in South Carolina and Georgia, Ron Paul in Iowa, New Hampshire and Virginia, and Rick Santorum everywhere else -- have run best among low-income and low-education voters.

It is in the nature of political journalism – says Mr. Barone -- that much attention is devoted to downscale voters. A question often asked is whether Republicans generally and Romney in particular can run well among blue-collar whites. --- Actually, Republicans have done pretty well with this group.

 Do you see the makin’s of an upset here?  Michael Barone seems to have spotted it before any of the major pundits in other papers and on other nets.

Not to stretch a metaphor to the breaking point but this looks like it could be the germination of a lalapalooza of a landslide!

Quite a conflict going on ‘Down South’ – With glimmerings that “Mitt” might fool the forecasters.

 

But wait a minute… that’s probably just ‘ground fog’ that’s buggering up the reception. – Right?   I dunno… seems pretty good to me.

 

I think the RNC (Tha’s Reepublican National Committiee for the uninitate amongst us Southernerereres) {There’s stickin’ keyes on this keyboard. I’m gonna git anothern’ OR… maybe I’ll start dictatin’ th’ hole thang and tha’tll cut thangs loose won’t hit.”

 

They told me at home that I bin hangin’ round Earl ‘n’ Lester’s place too much.  See it’s a combination bait shop and sushi bar.. it’s called  ** Earl ‘n’ Lester’s Bait Shop and Sushi Bar** -- no kidding.. it’s on the shore of th’ big lake on th’ state line…”You cain’t not miss hit!”  -- they keep on tellin’ me that but Ah miss hit nearly 99% of th’ time.

 

Well..  you see the Bait and Tackle boys don’t get over in the eatin’ place most of the time. Earl says they manner’s ain’t good ‘nuf for polite company…. So genrally he keeps ‘em pretty well cooped up over in th tackle shop except at breakfast. 

 

Almost had a riot one time when the coffee ran out.. Earl had to send out for more and he told Lester not to let it happen again.  And he ain’t!

 

Earl can speak rite sharply like he want you to remember hit …. ‘er  IT… sorry… I slip back into  Grand – dad’s days sometimes… especially when the keys is a-stickin’.

 

Ah’m thinkin’ serious ‘bout getttin’ a less-sticky key boar…d – Things ain’t never bin th’ same since David Ledfooter stomped on th’ floor too hard one breakfast… an turned over one of th maple syrup bottles and th’ top won’t screwed on rite…never has worked rite since…. But mebby we’ll ree-place hit.

          Just a Minute: We think “MITT” has to Mop-up in Alabam-Land or hang it up? That’s a song Mr. Gingrich, who’s met only one Georgia ‘peanut farmer’, he didn’t like – the name was Carter. Nowadays he confabulates that HE should be the ‘not Romney’ candidate even though he’s won only two contests since he left Georgia in 1999. He really lives in a 5245 square foot home in McLane, Virginia – not Georgia.

          On another facet, Mr. Santorum, a multi-millionaire, has opened a debate on morality not likely to come close to resolution any time soon. His own family’s experiences and reaction to a situation in which she’s been involved are beyond investigative capabilities we voters can reasonably exercise.

          That’s probably the situation of any selection for public office which exercises power over other people. How shall we judge proper standards and apply them?

ROMNEY CONTINUES TO SLIP IN POLL- Just a Minute Radio for Friday 120309

Hard to believe but it’s end of the week time again – and none too soon!

 

Although I must say so far this has been a very mild winter… which isn’t great news for some of the fruit farmers… apples and peaches need a certain number of below freezing hours to ‘set’ the fruit... When the cold weather comes later and freezes the buds….or nips ‘em in the bud as we are want to say – that means no crop, or damaged fruit … and that’s that.

 

Meanwhile back at the orchard we’re having a dickens of a time getting our act going here of nominating someone without ‘tearing a passion to tatters’ or something akin to that.  Who of the ‘offering’ Republicans would you rather have than to have another four years of the current President?  That’s what they call a Chinese Finger Puzzle in the Far East.  The harder you pull the tighter it gets!

 

But we have an ally – in the Lord. However, no question! We need to examine ourselves and see what kind of husbandman – or excellent wife – are we putting ourselves in the opposite side of the scale to counter balance. I’m not creating a sketch of how to get in past the “Pearly Gates” – what I am saying is in the parable of the man who got ten talents – the Lord said he got ten more.  That was NOT salvation…. That was pleasing the Lord and demonstrating you would be a good servant.  Is ‘good servant’ how you have been thinking of yourself these days. 

 

When the Lord was answering the brother’s questions or ‘requests’ that they might occupy the seats at the right and left hands of the Lord – how did He answer them? Something like – He that would be first of all must first be servant of all.  Prominence in the court of the King is gained or apparently attained by faithful service.  Once more… we’re not examining salvation… that comes first and on entirely a different basis. This being  a faithful and worthwhile servant is illustrated best in my book by looking at Joseph.  How did he become number two ruler in Egypt?  It wasn’t by running for office or bringing home the earmarked bacon. Joseph attained his trustworthiness in Pharaoh’s Court by timely and faithful and *valuable* service.  Don’t mix up your metaphors  on this important point.

 

I’m late… I’m late for a very important date…. My pillow. The old clock on the wall says 1: 51AM… time to shut ‘her down’ – speaking of my favorite flying machine and head for the hangar. SEE Y’all next week…in Daylite Savin’ Sunshine.

ROMNEY CONTINUES TO SLIP IN POLL

            Just a Minute: You’ve heard me express my preference for Rasmussen daily tracking poll – margin of error three points…--- in a head to head match up, Mr. Obama leads Mr. Romney four percentage points: Drop down to the next candidate and Mr. Obama leads Mr. Santorum by eight percentage points. What does that mean? Your turn to guess. Santorum is up by 50 percent over Romney but trails the President eight points.

          Is that called winning but losing? I do know the Democrats are laughing themselves silly.  

          Mr. Gingrich is even further back … but if he was out... don’t even go there. One projection says the President’s lead makes it look bad for ALL candidates – but when Mr.  Reagan was running against Mr. Carter a Harris poll then showed Carter winning handily. But he didn’t! That poll was a whole lot closer to the election and we didn’t have all these strung out primaries.        

          So what now?  Look – Relax! “Commit thy works unto the Lord and thy thoughts shall be established.” (Prov. 16:3)

SUPER TUESDAY DONE COME AND GONE! -- For JUST A MINUTE Radio on Wednesday 120307

Gremlins getting more sneaky – ringing bells where none exist.

 

But getting down to business we see that Super Tuesday has come and ‘done it’s thing’ – and given the uncertain way each state counts its ballots and requires their accounting of how delegates are chosen to nominate the nominees… it’s a wonder we get *anything* cogent out of the process which threatened to get started in December of last year.

 

Even though that didn’t come about – we had enough uncertainties about Virginia delegates in some cases not recognized for both Gingrich and Santorum; and further uncertainties about how the votes are eventually apportioned  when delegates decide to thumb their noses at what’s been decided by each party’s committee – and other things like the years ‘hanging chads’ threatened to negate all the votes in Florida… It’s a wonder this rickety system has clung together over these years.  Shades of Hamilton, Jefferson and Franklin whose ghosts must still haunt the swamps of ‘foggy bottom’ and cackle at the constraints with which we flagellate ourselves in this self-governing Republic.

 

In any case – so far so good! But we ain’t there yet – there’s many a crooked, uncertain cow-pasture path to be traversed before we arrive at an uncontested designation. But it provides entertainment and article-fodder for the would-be megawatt lawyers who love to dabble in such esoteric questions.

 

Perhaps we do long for a more stable and predictable method of choosing our leaders – but then since we can scarcely understand it ourselves and it obviously provides foggy bottom coverage for whether we are ‘doing it right’ or not – I’d say we’re managing to keep the attackers confused enough – but not really enough when we step back and consider the damage done by alien forces who would love to tear us to pieces if they could only figure out how our system works in the first place. 

 

Well… it’s growing late… and I’m not sure I could correctly – or even reasonably – parse the previous sentence. That’s one of the nice things about being in the public square (but not too prominent)  – we have the right to be heard – but not always to be understood.  That’s the uncertainty we can throw over enemies who haven’t figured out how America works – so far.  Let us pray they never figure it out!

BIG TEMPEST IN TENNESSEE - for Just A Minute Radio on Tuesday 120306

Today will be one of those anticipatory ones – except multiply it by a factor of ten x.

 

Looks like a lot of ‘scores’ trying to be settled today. This should move things along after a day or two and get it closer to a winnowed down race.

 

Of course Mr. Paul plans to be in there to the bitter end… except if he gets some offer he can’t refuse (like a choice spot on the Convention program so he can rant nationwide) but that’s politics.

 

Mr. Gingrich says if he doesn’t win GA he’ll quit… not sure I quite believe that. But we’ll see. Doesn’t look like it’s a very risky bet. The question will be has Mr. Santorum burned his bridge behind him as far as being of some help in the General Election.  I’m not a successful chess player to the point of being able to tell… Maybe a Ouija board would be better? (L)

 

I dunno… From the correspondence I see flowing in some of the states… it’s going to take a while to settle down into running this campaign like it ought to run. We’ve already had a LOT of bumps… lots of people didn’t sign up for this long a slog or ride or whatever.  Anyway… time for a good nights rest to cut back on the Alzheimer’s if that’s the way you spell it.

 

Just take it easy – have another cuppa tea without the caffeine…. I don’t think there will be any spectacular cliffhangers.

BIG TEMPEST IN TENNESSEE

            Just a Minute: Since we can’t look at ten states today – we’ll look at Tennessee -- it’s probably the tightest contest. Mr. Gingrich most likely will carry his home state of Georgia by about ten percent – so the big fight will likely occur in the Volunteer State.

            Senator Lamar Alexander, a Tennessee Republican, says The President is asking House Democrats "to hold hands, jump off a cliff and hope ‘Dingy Harry’ the Senate Majority Leader, will catch ‘em before they hit bottom.” But Harry Reid can’t do that because by the time he gets to the reconciliation bill, the President will have already signed Obama Care into law.

          Meantime, according to John Fund, President Obama already met with 20 undecided House Democrats behind closed doors, urging them to pass the Senate bill for the “good of the country.” Presidential historian Al Felzenberg, urged them to lay aside any pettiness or political concerns and vote for the bill to make history.

            It’s a bad sign. It means the “fix” is in and once again taxpayers come up on the wrong end of the stick. <> I’m Jack Buttram. (END)

A LIFE IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST -- for Just a Minute Radio on Monday 120305

Ah Hah… you thought I was going to start off on the Washington State caucuses... but I didn’t. (J)

 

See… we have to keep things unexpected around here or it gets boring.

 

I did write about a fellow, slightly younger than I, who is far smarter and more educated… but with whom I enjoyed working a short time in Washington. He is credited with coming up with the ‘Broken Windows’ theory of policing – or police action.  Mr. James Q. Wilson and another associate, Mr. Skelling back in 1982 wrote an article for the Atlantic Monthly that noted when windows start being broken out… or trash piling up in the city. Things are liable to go from bad to worse… which makes police work more expensive and ineffective.  At least that’s my abbreviation on what the two of them put together.

 

Some time before that as a pubic relations counsel to AEI  (American Enterprise Institute) I had worked with Dr. Wilson on some articles he had written on several things in which AEI was expressing ideas and solutions. He was a very nice guy to work with – far smarter than I,  and possessing much more education.  I just worked on putting what he was putting out into the ‘spoon feeding’ we did for news or opinion organizations AEI wanted to get to write about. It’s called PUBLIC RELATIONS – or at least it was then.

 

In any case Mr. Wilson was an easy person to work with and it was a pleasure. Last Friday from the newspaper reports, I take it that he succumbed to leukemia.  And I wanted to let readers and listeners to JUST A MINUTE to know that we value the work of people interested in improving things – like police work – which was an interest of Mr. Wilson’s – and about which he wrote quite cogently and understandably.  It’s good for the nation and indeed for the neighborhood.  So that’s a nice break from caucuses and whatever is going to go on tomorrow and we’ll be learning new stuff then. 

 

See – we do live more than a ‘one dimensional’ life that looks surprisingly like a ballot box (If that’s used anymore.)

 

Well, we all attempt to fit into our little niche. I hope you are feeling well today.  We’ll do our best to make our reporting of what’s happening at least as accurate as we can deduce.  I’m happy you  came by… we’ll be here again tomorrow (DV – that’ means’ Lord Willing in abbreviations) and I hope you’ll join us. A LIFE IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST

          Just a Minute: James Q. Wilson died in Boston Friday. He was a retired and well respected scholar from Harvard at 26 years and other schools. You’ll understand, I hope, if I say he wrote well for such a scholarly person -- often that’s not the case.

          I worked on several press releases for his work with the American Enterprise Institute – a scholarly conservative think-tank.  I found him to be a gentleman as well as a scholar – all of which doesn’t universally come wrapped in the same package.

          He had a passion for studying criminology and a diversity that took him -- as a scuba diver into some deep dives -- which he also chronicled.  He had wide ranging interests.

          Politically he voted for JFK, Lyndon Johnson and worked on the campaign of Hubert Humphrey. Those are hardly conservative earmarks, yet he was highly respected at AEI – which vouches for his conservatism.

WHERE'S THE GOOD NEWS GONE TO? : for Just A Minute Radio -- Friday 120302

Another astonishing week – believe it or not.

 

Crazy ‘little’ things get in the way – like putting the wrong date on a file – so you can never find it in the secret vault of the computer where the Gremlins have locked it away and hidden the combination that you had so carefully created. Well… it’s over until now and perhaps you’ll be able to make the best of it.

 

Isn’t this a sort of crazy “Winter” – some people out west have so much snow and ice it has caved in roofs… then along comes a spate of tornadoes that shouldn’t be here at all this time of year… and there are people  dead and shopping malls torn up. [From what business forecasters are putting into magazines in ten years or so there will be far fewer malls and they will cater to the high end purchasers that you have to drive across town to get to.

 

That’s kind of discouraging for bicycle riders… but then I don’t see too many bicycle riders going to the malls anyway. 

 

Well… one thing for sure… CHANGE!  I look back on my three score years plus ten… and there are a lot of things I remember well… they’re just not there anymore… or if they are they’re generally drastically changed.  Exhibit A… radio.

 

I used to come home from school… walking, not riding my bike or the bus… just walking.  (NO wonder I’m so trim and healthy – well that’s not *exactly* true.)

 

Anyway I remember Dad who installed a heater in the ’35 Ford he had bought new.  No heater… no radio…. the air conditioning was turning a handle just below the windshield and it pushed out the windshield … and the air came rushing in… to cool things off… except in the summers… which I remember as being both hotter and the winters being colder.  See… things just aren’t the same.  No more street cars… no REAL train whistles or bells… only the occasional Diesel horn…-- no red cabooses… (Is that the way to spell the plural of caboose?

 

OK… I don’t know how I got off in these tangled briar patches…but it’s late and I’m off to bed.  I hope you have a great weekend including a worshipful Sunday…and fellowship with your family and friends… remember we’re all going away. (J)

“JUST A MINUTE”

WHERE’S THE GOOD NEWS GONE TO?

          Just a Minute: In Washington I worked for Senator Strom Thurmond who went to World War Two as a Colonel but after becoming Governor, and Senator retired as Major General and Chairman of the Senate Armed services committee.

          I had to get as close as possible to try and write about what was going on so I could prepare materials he used for speeches, congressional hearings and floor debates. I was in over my head and I had to depend on many other sources for information the Senator could use.

          This government now is much bigger. Last week Defense Secretary Panetta said it takes about $850 thousand dollars to keep one serviceman in Afghanistan. And that with a ‘reluctant and apologetic’ Commander in Chief.

          Folks we’re way under water – I’m really thankful we have the Lord to look out for us for that’s the only way America is going to survive – if that’s what God wants.

          I don’t know how to say it with more urgency – but I wanted to make it clear we need to be praying.
