WHY CAN'T WE JUST "BE REASONABLE?" -- Just a Minute Radio for Friday 10016

            Hello from Ft. Jackson….

No… they haven’t renewed the draft to take ‘geezers’ – I’m down here in the Columbia area to help in the distribution of Gideon New Testaments in Camouflage.  Not “me” in camouflage but the NT”s… for the new recruits.  So please pray if you have a moment – that the Gospel may go forth to accomplish that to which God sends it by HIS Holy Spirit.

Meantime the on air JUST A MINUTE today takes up the ‘hot and humid’ subject of abortion – which generally raises the temperature and humidity level about this time in the election cycle.  Many folks can’t understand why Bible believing Christians make such a big to-do over a ‘health-care’ procedure. Of course the question of when does life begin arises… and without going into the technicalities, most of us think it begins at conception – and from then on you don’t have just a clump of natal cells, but a life beginning and shortly a heartbeat and other vital signs are discernable – all that is ‘scientific’ and quantifiable.

In any case taking a life of the unborn in the womb is serious business with us.  It’s not just surgery or medical procedure and especially in the instance of partial birth abortion -- I personally think it is a hideous and torturous crime. No matter what you or I think it is an intersection of political and ethical forces that become crucially important to how we think and act about life and its sacredness.

Today’s program is only one minute – and of course such a subject cannot be adequately covered in 60 seconds. But I plant my flag on the side of protecting the unborn from those who would take advantage of their inability to speak for themselves or mount any defense.  It’s just not moral to be greener than grass as an environmentalist and totally involved in such matters as ‘climate change’ but totally, or mostly indifferent toward protecting the lives of those least able to protect or speak for themselves.

Some years ago I heard Dr. Francis Schaeffer speak at Notre Dame University on this subject – and he made a very cogent presentation plus forecasting how it would shortly become a ‘game changer’ as far as civilization is concerned.  Indeed his prophecy has come true. This age is more and more indifferent to the morality present or absent in the whole area of the beginnings as well as the ending of life. This space is too small to even begin.

But the difficulties still need to be assaulted and conquered – and by the Lord’s grace they will be.  I want to put my life and force (whatever remains of it) on the side of protecting the unborn and respecting the sanctity of life.  I make no claim to high expertise here… but I do think the evidence as well as the morality of being anti-abortion is abundantly clear – and I take my stand there.

Well… I’ve run out of time and space for today – but plan to come back to stand on the side of the unborn as long as  the Lord enables me.  May the Lord bless you and your understanding of HIM in today’s world.

            Cordially, IN HIM

 “JUST A MINUTE”

WHY CAN’T WE “JUST BE REASONABLE?”

Just a Minute: -- Sirius is the “dog star”brightest from July 3rd  to August 11th .  I bring it up because in the Northern Hemisphere generally, it’s hot and humid. The way the atmosphere is affected often, when “abortion” is brought up.

“Why don’t you guys just be reasonable? -- Drop it.”  That raises my blood pressure.

Can a society describe itself as ‘civilized’ while taking an unborn’s life in its totally indefensible state?

How can one claim to be civilized and compassionate allowing one medical doctor to terminate an infant in the womb, while in the nearby neo-natal unit another skilled physician does his utmost to preserve life?

Theologian Frances Schaffer, says this is the critical issue of our society. He is absolutely correct.

Abortion is not a political issue like financial rules – or setting interest rates.  It may not be resolved by ‘majority vote’ – or popularity polling.

On another day possibly, we’ll have another go at explaining the magnitude of its importance.

WHUT IS HAPPNIN' TA TH' MEAN MR. GREEN? -- Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 100714

It’s a BEAUTIFUL day in the neighborhood… if you like mostly dry hot weather…

Well… enough talk about the weather… Looking back over the last few days and the conversation written down, you’d think I work for NOAA weather radio or something similar.  It has been hot and dry and a bit humid all at the same time.  But “Even this shall pass away…” as the old poem goes. If you don’t like the weather – just wait a while.

Yesterday we did have some storm-watch boxes over the Carolinas… but the rain was apparently anything but general… quite spotty… and ‘hailey’ – no offense to one of the gubernatorial candidates who has a similar sounding name. (J)

Today Earl ‘n’ Lester’s Bait Shop and Sushi Bar crowd at ‘Playfair’ seem to be a throwback to a couple of weeks back when the runoff election was held and Mr. Greene surprised us all (perhaps including himself, although he does not say so) to find he finished first on the Democrat Senate Ticket.  At first there was a muffled roar of “What Happened?”  Which since has died down considerably – and yesterday I saw Mr. Greene in a suit and tie heading out – on TV – to the hustings to address the NAACP chapter at Manning, SC… so he does campaign after all – even though no one so far has been able to put their finger on just where he went or what he said.

Nonetheless… I’m sure candidate DeMint will not take his opponent lightly – and will take the requisite steps to fulfill his campaign pledge and meet and greet and shake hands with all that time will allow.  In fact he’s done a lot of that in Colorado already and probably will do more. I just get a chuckle out of those who are wondering just what is happening – I think it’s pretty evident… and I think Mr. Carter will be happy to have someone at least in SC who will take his place as the candidate of Malaise at least on the local posters.  Now that’s not a prediction – just an observation.

Friday I’ll be at Ft. Jackson (DV) with a couple of Gideon buddies and we’re scheduled to be giving out some of our small Gideon New Testaments in Cameo for the troops there. It’s my first time to take part in that exercise and I’m looking forward to it.  I’ll have a report for you next week.

God bless you all and enable you to *enjoy* the wonderful SC weather in JUNE… maybe the worst of it’s over… unless it’s not. (L)

IS VERBAL JIU-JITSU IN STYLE? - Just a Minute Radio for Monday 100712

IT’s MONDAY – and due to be a hot one in the Southeast…

Well, we had a bit of rain – but not enough to wet a dishrag where we are… can’t even do a good job wiping the windshield and if I decide to wash the car (it’s too hot I feel) I may trigger a car-washing or lawn-watering restriction… and I don’t want to be responsible for that.

Yesterday we had a wonderful show of ‘almost rain’ in the local vicinity – lots of thunder and visible lightning – but the amount of rain was hardly disturbed by occasional wind… and ended up giving us all the show … but no go!

Now I did have a neighbor who lives a few miles to the east call and say they were without electricity – which I imagine was the result of a local lightning strike that either blew out a transformer… or hit so many times it tripped the auto cutout circuit which only allows a certain number of lightning surges in a fixed period before the automaton takes over and says “that’s enough for now” – which generally means you have to await the energy provider sends out a crew check things out… make repairs as needed and then start things up again.  You may need to go out to eat.

Such are the vagaries of living in an automated age.

My brain is getting similar ideas. If it has too many overloads in a certain time period… well, it just up an shuts down or pretends not to remember that ‘old’ stuff and pushes it out of the mental file cabinet – and you’re left searching around for a pad and pencil to write down whatever it was you were trying to remember in the first place.

We’ve also got a recalcitrant microwave on our hands. A while back it decided not to warm a casserole for a picnic… we finally cajoled compliance… but after another episode I became convinced the ‘magnetron’ [I don’t know what it is other than a glorified power tube] that produces the little wavy things that warm up your coffee or defrosts the frozen green beans.  I tried giving the unit away to my favorite charity… but they only take stuff that’s working.  Sort of a non-starter for charitable work I think.

So I decided to try getting it fixed – economically I hoped – and giving it to someone who needed a microwave.  So far… no luck.  Sears … who manufactured it offered to send out a repair technician for $149.95 who might not be able to fix it on the spot… I figured I could buy a new one for a little less… and so gave that up…   I did, however find a low cost small appliance repair shop in a less than elegant part of town.  For a non-refundable deposit of $40 they would “Take a look at it” and apply the $40 to whatever repair it needed. I didn’t know if that was a good deal or not… but decided it was better than throwing a less than two year old microwave out on the junk heap.  Now two weeks and two repair calls later – plus another $15 bucks of throwing good money after bad… we still don’t have a working microwave as a result of my casting about.

Meantime I followed my first instinct … and purchased one … not from Sears… but couldn’t get the proper color (black) to satisfy my wife.  But, for me and my frustration index,, she made an exception.  I decided not to buy the aerosol of black paint.  (I couldn’t figure out how to make the labeling work right… and I’d have covered up the buttons with black sticky stuff.)

Ah well… tomorrow’s another day… we’ll see what develops on the home cooking front.  I think we can get along without a kitchen stove… but not a microwave. (L)

“JUST A MINUTE”

IS VERBAL JIU-JITSU IN STYLE?

Just a Minute: --  Seasoned political campaigners agree good campaigning technique causes your opponent to commit a faux-pas and hopefully paint himself into a corner.  Tennis coaches emphasize learning to stay inside the white lines – outside means defeat.

Which means in the run up to November Tea  Party coaches need to teach firm-control.  Charles Krauthammer points out it’s easy to dig a hole too deep to readily get out.  Often an inexperienced crew spends limited campaign resources, (mainly energy, time and money ) repeating what you “meant” to say the first time.  It’s the sure mark of an amateur.

Republicans it seems are well positioned for a winning season if they can skillfully keep the opposition off balance but not hit the ball outside the lines. Campaigning is a skill to be learned which takes practice.

Our cool Senator Jim DeMint is an excellent candidate. He’s followed Ronald Reagan’s style. Be strong and determined but no need to ‘chew the scenery’ and scare off new and independent voters on the move.

It’ll be a close call – It’ll require lots of prayer.  Let’s start now!

WHO SAYS POLITICS IS PASSE'? -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 100709

Welcome to HOT Friday … Hottest spell this year I believe –

So what do we do to cool off?  I saw a picture of one fellow sitting in a plastic lawn chair beside a fire hydrant turned on HIGH! … But I can’t say I saw him look comfortable.  I prefer seeing Apine scenes in Summer when you can still see some of the snow fields up high… but you don’t see people enduring them – unless they are Mountain Climbers… and I’m not sure those folks are playing with a full set of chess pieces.

Oh well… some people like pansies… and some daises – We tried some Impatiens (I think that’s the way they’re spelled) … Anyway they are pretty and petite – and somehow I cast them as ‘cheerful’ – can’t tell you exactly why.  Pansies seem a trifle shy – although I’m always amazed at their ability to winter-over in people’s flower gardens.  Apparently they are not as successful at ‘summering’ over.

Our yard already looks like autumn even though July is just getting warmed up… but most of the yards, not under irrigation…and even some that are… are getting rather strawey brown… and crunchy if you step on them.  We’re ‘mighty dry’ – I recall visiting my Grandparents who were cotton farmers down below Mauldin … on Holland road.  At this time of Summer if there was a lack of rain this severe… the snatches of conversation I would catch from the menfolks gathered outside in the church yard would all be about how dry it was… and whether they had timed the ‘sody’ application properly…

If there was too much rain… then the talk would be about how much grass  there was in the cotton (and corn) and the problems it presented to making a crop.  At this point in July it was too early to have local watermelons…but with the heat there was plenty of desire for them to hurry along. They too were affected by too little rain.  It was also too hot and too early for Muscatines …but I really enjoyed them when they came – and my brother and I would have ‘maypop’ fights in the red clay ditches… where they often grew abundantly.

Well…those were different days… gone or moved away… but the heat remains… I can remember hot summer nights… and being scared nearly to death by a screech-owl that took up a perch in the barn one very moonlit summer night… and it sounded for all the world like a woman’s screams.  Oh well… those are the vivid recollections of a pre- teen childhood visiting on Granma’s Farm… Grandpa was there too of course… I’ll tell you sometime how I remembered him cooling his coffee by pouring it in the saucer and neatly keeping his moustache out of the way while he blew on it to cool it down. Many, many sepia toned memories of days long gone by…. And HOT weather.

Keep cool – enjoy some cold water out of a tin dipper --  and water melons…

THE ILL WIND'S A-BLOWIN' - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 100707

Good Day again…

“Tengo mucho calor…” I said to one of the roofers working in the neighborhood yesterday.  He agreed… it’s hot – and from what all the forecasts say… it’s due to get hotter.

Oh my… we *need* some rain…. “But your Heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of these things…” Right… and I have need to remember it. In our 57 years of ‘hoppin’ around parts of the country and indeed from time to time of the world… we have had needs.  But I had occasion just a few hours ago to write what I hope is an encouraging note to a missionary who – with his family – have spent a couple of years in Mexico trying to minister to the needs of folks who are indeed in need – but quite often don’t know it – or are deceived by Satan and his servants.

Yes – The Lord does meet needs.  He answers every prayer … we need often to read the Scriptures and be reminded --- And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.” (Ps 106:15)  Sometimes the Lord God grants what we ask for but at the expense of spiritual leanness – Have you ever experienced that?  I sure have and I’ve been a Christian for sure since September of 1947.  I’m really ashamed to think of how many times I’ve asked for something – and my Heavenly Father has given it to me – accompanied by spiritual leanness.  And that’s not comfortable.

When you get in the boat the Lord Jesus wants you in – and you’re paddling as hard as you can but don’t seem to be getting anywhere… that’s leanness… at least like I’ve experienced.  Now sometimes – now I’m thinking of Job… he was used *greatly* by God.  If you read Job casually without having the Holy Spirit lead you where you need to be lead. Well… it’s no use… it’s leanness time.  He’ll give you your request – but boy is it uncomfortable… and you *might* do some good – but nothing like what you could have done if you’d paid closer attention to HIM… and born *much* fruit – not just ‘some’ fruit… or no fruit at all.

Yesterday I gave a handful of New Testaments – Gideon New Testaments with a very clear Gospel message in the back… I told them, in my limited Spanish that this was the Palabra de Dios… the Word of God that lead to “vida eternal” – you can figure that out… life eternal.  I also explained it was God’s word in English and encouraged them to get someone to translate it for them… thus I hope to get two souls into God’s word at the price of one… (me) speaking poor Spanish.  So pray for about eight fellows… all, or most professing Christians… but ones, I fear who have no *clear* picture of what Christianity is all about.

So… just pray for these friends who are so near… but also so far… that God will take the Word of God and cleanse their hearts no matter where the word comes from… for it is “Quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword…” And that even leads us off into another story.

Time and space have flown… it’s between 3 & 4 in the morning … and I’m not a morning person… but PTL… He can use me even when I’m sleepy… and I’m not right now… I’m praying for HIS will and I know that will be done.

Thanks for listening – thanks for praying.  God bless you and your family.  IN HIM

Cordially,

Jack Buttram

Jack: You mean that it blows nobody good?

Homer:– Last week we wuz a tawkin’ ‘bout Mr. Byrd givin’ up his place in death as th’ longest servin’ in th’ Senate…

BB: Sen. Thurmond was  th’ longest there fer a while but Byrd ended up th’ longest in th’ congers….

Jack: I don’t think it makes much difference now – I’m still for term limits.

MizP: Ah am too Mr. Jack… seems like we don’t hardly send nobody there till they gets corrupted.

Jack: Power, Miz Pearl… power and the human condition. And that was recognized in Virginia - 1776.

Homer: Really Mr. Jack?

Jack: Really, Homer… the Virginia Declaration of Rights – originally drawn by George Mason and unanimously  adopted by Virginia’s Convention of Delegates at Williamsburg June 12,

MizP: About a month befoah th’ vote in Philadelphia on July Fowath.

Jack: Exactly right Miz Pearl.

BB: Did that deckarashun say “term limits”?

Jack: The Fifth Article says: “That members of the Executive and Judicial branches of government in order to feel and participate in the burdens of the people…

MizP: They shuah had tha-ut one rite…

Jack: They “should at fixed periods be reduced to a private station … their vacancies be supplied by frequent  certain and regular elections…”

Homer: No kiddin’ … tha-ut was writtin’ in 1776?

MizP: Rite ‘bfo the Declaration of Indpendence was signed

BB: An hit passed unanimously? …  Why din’t somebody say so?

Jack: Well quite a few folks did… but also quite a few have forgotten why it’s important.

MizP: Well Ah thank hit’s impawtant… Mebby Ah’ll git summa my frens who comes ovah fowa tea ta take it up…

Homer: Cud hit be done Mr.Jack?

Jack: Well Homer… with God – all things are possible.  Maybe the country’s fed up enough with what’s happening

ATTACKS ON FREEDOM -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday 100705

G’day – hope you had a happy Fourth and are possibly enjoying an extra day off on the 5th…!

It’s been a quiet weekend for us *xcept* for the sound effects wars that began in our neighborhood on Saturday night and continued well after midnight --- and I don’t know how long into Monday – because that’s when I’m still writing this!

Anyway – I’m glad in a cheerful way that the 4th Celebration does continue exuberantly… for we certainly have enough detractors to fill up the bleachers. People who apparently don’t care much for America except they want to live here rather than anywhere else (despite their critical attitudes.)…

Don’t get me wrong… I am still for the first amendment – which I feel like most of these churls don’t even grasp what we old ‘geezers’ are talking about.  They’re pretty hep on the 2nd amendment because it has something to do with guns… and if there’s anything even coming close to restricting drugs or ‘mary-jane’ or whatever else they’re interested in consuming – well they begin to holler about somebody crimping their style with an unholy screech.  But if we “older ones” begin to talk about being responsible citizens or cutting down on spending or anything else along those lines… “Saidy bar the door.” They don’t want to hear it – and they’d like a Constitutional convention to be sure their preferences are written into law (providing they don’t have to put out any $$$).

Well… it is Monday … and I’ve about had it up to here with those who complain but don’t do anything about it.  As we review the history of those brave people who (for the most part) did risk lives, limbs and their “sacred honor” [To borrow a phrase from the Declaration] in the founding and protection of our Nation. – well… I guess there’s no law against ignorance except perhaps when it becomes ‘willful stupidity’ – rather like wounding yourself with firecrackers after being warned.

But I still don’t wish them ill – and that’s because I have an inkling of what ‘ill” is – Some years back I managed to scald my right forearm by thinking I could ‘sneak’ the cap off a hot automobile radiator and avoid getting hurt. I was wrong.

And for the most indelible time I can recall for several hours on a weekend when we were planning a trip to the beach, I can still remember the pain and inflammation (although –truth be told – it was not a *serious burn*) just seriously painful for more hours than I thought I could stand.

In those few hours I believe I got a clearer picture of what ‘hell’ must be like – and renewed my determination not only not to go there… but to do whatever I could to discourage others from going there.  Those are memories long gone by – but even today not long forgotten.  (Sometimes pain is really a friend when it warns you away from stuff like that.)

Well… enough… if I keep on pecking away…this may not even get on the blog – but I will give it an old college try.

Enjoyed having you along today… come back again Wednesday if you can. (J)

“JUST A MINUTE”

ATTACKS ON FREEDOM

Just a Minute: -- Library of Congress experts recently uncovered a hidden word under an attempted erasure in the original Declaration of Independence.  Electronic imaging shows Thomas Jefferson must have tried to erase and substitute ‘subjects’ with ‘citizens’.  Apparently he experienced a mistaken throwback in considering Colonists subjects to the King.

A Washington Post  story noted West Virginia’s Senator Byrd’s said he was careful point out he’d served *with* several Presidents not *under* them;  thus preserving the concept of three separate but equal branches of government which the current Administration seems bent on eroding.

On this day following the celebration of our nation’s birthday, it’s good to recall a portion of Emma Lazarus poem engraved on the pillar supporting the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor:

"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Shall we not pray for renewed dedication for the fulfillment of that prayer.

WHEN THE TUMULT AND THE SHOUTING DIES -- WHAT'S LEFT? -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 100702

Howdy once again – we’ve reached the end of another week.

This one’s been a beauty!  Hot and humid every day… with a few scattered showers and showy thunder but not a good steady soaking rain… although not having it gave us something to talk about… which is one of the purposes of the weather anyway isn’t it?

Well… I’m not going to deliver myself of my usual Fourth of July espousements – (I’m not real sure that’s a word… my spell checker doesn’t think so – and I’m too fenced in here and it’s late at night – too late to dig out the huge unabridged dictionary that we bought in sections years ago through a grocery chain… I think it was Winn-Dixie … they pulled out of South Carolina some time back I think.) Anyway… upon reflection I’ve decided it’s probably not a ‘spouting-off’ – as I think it ought to be, but somehow they’ve tied it into weddings and spouses and proposals and all that… too complicated.

tiate – and I *still* can’t get it across to them in Dublin, NH that I much prefer the *Southern* edition.  That gives me the tide times at the mouth of the Savannah rather than Boston Harbor… and the sunrise/set times are closer to be accurate… but they are still off enough to be aggravating… I believe they use Atlanta’s long/lat to be more precise.]  But I get up at the same time anyway.

If you don’t check the OFA you miss important stuff like this:”The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists the traditional timing as the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11. At this time, the Dog Star, Sirius, rises with the Sun. Sirius is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major.”

See… you’d of never picked up that July 3rd (tomorrow) is when the Dog Days begin… well… maybe you might of…We have a fairly educated audience.  I know there are a lot of you out there who are just longing to write President Obama and instruct him on correcting his recitation of the poem written at the foot of the Statue of Liberty – which always gets a good play around the 4th…  The other day on TV… he said in his inimitable professorial way:

Give me your tired your poor

Your troubled masses yearning to be free…

Never realizing that the word in that second line is “breathe” – not be – Of course if you don’t breathe… you soon will not be… so I guess  the point is moot.  But perhaps it gives those who think the President probably wasn’t born in the US anyway, another bit of ammunition.

Well… I know most of you never read this far anyway… if you do… HAVE A HAPPY FOURTH – and be careful with those cherry bombs… Lord willing we’ll see you with us MONDAY!

“JUST A MINUTE”

WHEN THE TUMULT AND THE SHOUTING DIES – WHAT’S LEFT

Just a Minute: -- Robert C. Byrd was a Senator of the old school.  Even though in Congress he enrolled in night school to fulfill what he determined was his duty to West Virginians.  He gave early signs he was devoting himself to be all he could be in representing and serving his State.  They returned him to his legislative duties nine times.

He became a genuine student of history and despite being crowned “King of Pork” –  in which he took pride as serving his people – yet he realized the need to rise above partisanship when needed – and in his particular way contributed to the determination that bespeaks America.

He loved to quote philosophers and poets – he epitomized these words written by William Shakespeare:

Glory is like a circle in the water.

Which never ceaseth to enlarge itself,

Till by broad spreading it disperse to naught.

He also realized the truth of this brief couplet – to which more politicians and celebrities would be wise to attend.

“Fame is but a slow decay

Even this shall pass away.”
