"DOUBLESPEAK" NOW ON DISPLAY -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday 4/13/09

            Hello again everyone –

The first major occurrence of this kind of behavior was when the President seemed really to push for being able to speak late in last year’s campaign at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate. He was steered away from that location by protocol people both in the U.S. and in Germany. That particular location is reserved for heads of state. The Obama campaign lobbied hard for it – but “Candidate” Obama – even with all his experience as a neighborhood organizer in Southside Chicago, having been a member of the Illinois Legislature, and first term Senator in the U.S. Congress, -- did not qualify.

Now, on his maiden overseas trip as President, he seems not to be able to fully grasp he is President – but not of the World. Then visiting the King of Saudi Arabia – he does a deep bow  -- a protocol gaffe for which he might be excused, but his press messenger boy – “Gibsey” so named by his teleprompter – laughed it off denigrating the questioning reporter.

One might remember when Vice President, Dan Quale, misspelled potato – it was the subject of wise-cracks and columns for a month and a half, but the liberal-stream press whips out its obamazized glasses, allowing no critical view of ‘el Presidente,’ and it receives little attention.

On top of all this, the sacrifices of American lives and treasure to rescue Europe, and other environs, from the clutches of Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Kaddafi and the like, are brushed aside in a tide of untoward obsequiousness. It’s an affront to the American people, our leaders and our Nation – but he’s only been on the job a couple of months.

Well, let us at least *hope* it gets better. There’s no teleprompter that’ll save you from that kind of hole.

            Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

“DOUBLESPEAK” NOW ON DISPLAY

JUST A MINUTE – For some time I’ve been wrestling with the task of making sense out of President Obama’s pronouncements which sound so ‘meaningful’ but end up being about as worthwhile and useful as cotton candy at the county fair. Charles Krauthammer, in his Friday Washington Post opinion column called it a “fiction and a farce.” I think that’s too mild. The word that comes to my mind is Gobbldygook – which ends up meaning nothing -- and that’s *exactly* what I think it conveys.

This is dangerous. For years I’ve been reminded: “words are the symbols we think with.” If they are uncertain or confusing… our actions will be also. This was always my first concern during last year’s Presidential campaign. Candidate Obama’s rhetoric was often confusing, uncertain and contradictory. Now when he goes to Europe, bows down to the king of Saudi Arabia and apologizes for America’s role in the world, he’s no longer our leader; he’s spreading “uncertainty and contradiction” all over the world -- confusing our friends and allies, while giving aid and comfort to America’s enemies.

NOW YOU SEE IT -- NOW YOU DON'T -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 04-10-09

Howdy everyone – IT’S FRIDAY!  Paul Harvey lingers on~~~

Very definitely do I remember in the summer of 1947 – when at my Father’s suggestion and his going to bat for me, I got my first *real* job… digging post holes and manholes for a neighbor who was foreman on a electrical line crew. It was hot, and dirty and I learned a lot!

It also marked when I first saw government taxes being taken out of the forty-five cents an hour I was being paid – or was *supposed* to be paid. It was Social Security deductions. Well… I paid and thought little about it and didn’t realize my employer was kicking in the same amount to what I thought was just a government rat-hole.

Now, I have to admit… I think it could have been done better and lest costly or wasteful – but I’m glad somebody forced me to lay something away for a rainy day. Now that I’m well past three score and ten… the rainy days are here… It’s not perfect, but it’s better than I had hoped. And almost every election somebody is wanting to tinker around with it – usually to the detriment of future generations and reduction of individual responsibility – so I’m more careful with what I say.

One of the things we need to be aware of is irresponsible or possibly evil people keep looking to diminish our freedoms for expansion of their power. That’s what our forefathers called ‘eternal vigilance’ – and they well said… it’s the price of liberty. Let’s not forget it.

“JUST A MINUTE”

NOW YOU SEE IT – NOW YOU DON’T

JUST A MINUTE – Only two problems have occurred with the Social Security Trust Fund -- No trust – no fund.” But economist Kevin Hassett of the American Enterprise Institute says the surpluses that used to kick into the ‘imaginary trust fund’ are now absent. Hassett says – more money is paid out than taken in. Any budgeter knows fewer people working means … payroll taxes are down … OK… we’ll hit red ink about ten years ahead of schedule and bingo -- even Mr. Obama’s own budget shows an eight billion dollar gap between income and outgo. That’s bad!

Steve Goss, at Social Security says: count the interest the Feds owe the fund -- that'll keep the system “in the black for several years.” OK -- but what then?

Jim DeMint, our Senator from South Carolina, has a bill to stop the shenanigans – it’ll hold the government responsible to pay real debtors (the public) rather than throw good money after bad – problem is will the President buy it? Don’t hold your breath.

DO YOU BELIEVE YOUR LYIN' EYES? -- Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 04-08-09

Hello again –

You’re in for a treat when Homer and Billy Bob and Miz Pearl get to deconstructing just what’s happening in that anti-right-to-work state of “Taxachusetts” where the Boston Globe is in danger of being shut down by its newspaper unions. I think there’s about 13 involved from the pressmen to the news and editorial writers.

The dilemma is the New York Times bought the Globe a few years back… in more prosperous days. Now the Globe, we understand is hemorrhaging red ink. Managers from the Times have told their minions at the Globe, either “get the bottom line shaped up or we’ll shut it down.”

Hardly in accord with the Times’ hard line in opposition to right-to-work laws, which generally protect companies from being bullied by union leaders.

So here’s the Globe trying to save the sinking ship – about to slip under the journalistic waves by tough union rules and outlandish contracts – being told by New York types: “Either staunch the bleeding or prepare to die.” This from a newspaper that thinks nothing of impaling a company being bullied by union management. When the shoe is on the other foot of a NYT-owned paper the line suddenly becomes a fiscally conservative feature – don’t pass the ideology this way. It’s hard to stand up in that kind of current.

Stay tuned as the battle is joined – find out which is more important: Survival of a company providing employment and services to a major metropolis, or following the dictates of distant ideologues who expect the Globe to ‘spend its way out of difficulty.’ It’s a battle of Titans locked in a rock-and-hardplace wrestling match. The outcome should be instructive.

A CONSERVATIVE EVALUATION -- Just a Minute Radio for 04-

            Hello on a Monday…

Dr. Tom Coburn is an M.D. – and has made quite a few friends among the electorate and in conservative circles, because of the stands he has taken against abortion, and for fiscal responsibility. Interestingly enough he came to the U.S. Senate in 2005, in the same class as the state senator from Illinois, Barack Obama, and the two are apparently close personal friends while being on opposite sides of important issues.

Dr. Coburn, a year or so ago, ‘hotlined’ a bill he and John Kerry had differences on but they ‘negotiated’ those and were able to follow a procedure in the Senate whereby since the major sponsor and the major opponent had reached an agreement – the leadership ‘hotlines’ were employed to achieve a unanimous consent passage of the legislation without having to have a roll call vote.

Hotlining is a mixed bag… THOMAS (legislative data base maintained by the Library of Congress) says of 399 resolutions and bills passed by Congress through August of 2007 only 29 were actual roll call votes… the rest were ‘hotlined’. Often a bill is passed right at the end of the day through phone calls to the leaderships contacts in Congressional offices… they have 15 minutes to respond, if there is no response it is counted as no objection … and generally the bill (or resolution – like naming a post office) is passed. Here’s a link to Dr. C’s explanation on the web. http://coburn.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=HoldItems.Home  -- (You may have to cut and paste it in your browser.)

The difficulty is it does not contribute to ‘transparency’ in the legislative process – and sneaky things can pass without scrutiny late at night or in a push for recess. In general most of the ‘watchdog’ groups frown on hotlining because it can be abused and after all shouldn’t *someone* besides the sponsors read legislation that’s going to affect us all before its passage?

In any case, I thought you’d want some information. Dr. Coburn has participated in hotlining – but in general does not – and probably the Republic would be safer – even if slower – if the practice was outlawed. That’s one thing you can communicate with your legislators about.

Another is as conservatives, we need to be diligent in getting our ‘troops’ together – picking our targets and concentrating on those. In other words since conservatives (and especially conservative Republicans) are at present an endangered breed – we need to forget (at least for the present) about achieving majority rule and fight the fight of insurgents if we are to save and recover the Constitution and the Republic.

I cut my political teeth on the ‘64 Goldwater campaign. We kept expecting the Cavalry to ride to our rescue – hearing the ‘siren call that the silent majority was out there and going to win. Well… the rescue never happened. What happened was a leader like Ronald Reagan saw what was needed, rolled up his sleeves and gathered his ‘kitchen cabinet’ of conservative California Republicans, won his race for Governor where he learned a lot – coupled with his own good humor and character – and fought the political insurgency battles… finally making a breakthrough eight years after LBJ had won the biggest majority in history (which record stood until McGovern came along).

Perhaps we can continue this discussion here later -- if you want to send me an e-mail… the address is below on the blog – and we’ll see what develops… but right now I’ve used up today’s allotment of keystrokes. (J)

“JUST A MINUTE”

A CONSERVATIVE EVALUATION

JUST A MINUTE – Physician, Tom Coburn, Senator from Oklahoma, writes this about the President in RealClearPolitics:

(Quote) "I believe President Obama has proposed the most significant shift toward collectivism … in the history of our republic. … his budget aspires not merely to promote economic recovery but lay the groundwork for sweeping expansions of government authority in areas like health care, energy and even daily commerce. …. I'm concerned his budget could turn our government into the world's largest health care provider, mortgage bank or car dealership, “(Unquote)

Coburn and Obama both came to the Senate in 2005 – they went through orientation together. But I observe Dr. Coburn as a strict anti-abortionist – opposite the President. The Oklahoman’s record is among the top conservatives. I’m praying he and other genuine conservatives, like Jim DeMint (ranked number one by National Journal) and Governors Sanford and Jindal -- can throw us a lifeline in these times when the GOP is struggling to throw off the RINO’s and regain its footing on the conservative path to restore the Republic.

STARK REALITY ON TV (really U Tube) 04-03-09 Friday

Howdy Folks – Little mix up there on Wednesday…

No the bus didn’t go over the bank or anything like that… It’s just  them “little green creatures” left over from WWII… when they blamed all the things that can go wrong at the worst possible time on “The Gremlins” – They existed along side of Bill Mauldin’s GI Joe --  The Dogface cartoons carried in Stars and Stripes (a newspaper produced for the Armed Services) and around the world.  They were ubiquitous.  Even AF pilots (previously the Army Air Corps) claimed to have seen them posing out on their wings or nacelles.

Anyway they sneak into my office during the daytime (because I’m often working in there past midnight… and mess up things so royally I couldn’t even get my computer to boot up. It’s been acting up for about a year now… I firmly believe the manufacturers of these things build in a little “obsolescence” bug … after 2.5 years they begin to slow down and look a little fuzzy… and of course your warranty is kaput (for you non- German aficionados that means it don’t work no mo) and it’s liable to fail at any time.

Of course when it does it will be at the worst possible moment… I think that’s part of Mr. Murphy’s irreplaceable law.

Anyway … I’m still using a leather whip on it and getting a little more work… but it may get recalcitrant again… who knows.

Today’s script and story is one I’m a little surprised at how well it caught on. It’s a very interesting confluence of influence and events. We shall just have to await the history books in a hundred years. – I’m glad to be back and trust you and your family will have a blessed weekend. May the Lord’s blessing rest upon us all.

“JUST A MINUTE”

STARK REALITY ON TV

JUST A MINUTE – You may not have seen this new video clip that begins with an ultrasound image flickering darkly as the Narrator says: "This child's future is a broken home...he will be abandoned by his father... his single mother will struggle to raise him..."

Music swells and the picture cross fades into an image of President Barack Obama addressing a crowd of adoring faces. The banner tag across the bottom says: “Life -- Imagine the Potential."

Mr. Obama supports abortion but this video by a Catholic organization now counts nearly 1.8 million hits on YouTube since it was posted in January. It has turned his life story into a powerful message for the anti-abortion movement.

So far the White House has declined comment.

The producers say their 40-second video is a strategic breakthrough that may define a new course for their movement. Presently, being opposed to abortion is to exist in a hostile Washington environment with Democrats totally controlling Congress as well as the White House. Of their effort they say:

"When you're out of political power, you start thinking about new ways to do things."

NO MORE SOFTBALLS -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday, March 30th, 2009

            Hello again –

It’s been a rough week weatherwise for a lot of folks. Some locally, some far away. I saw several big trees keeled over by the wind over the weekend. But the worst property damage I observed was a fence and even it didn’t look too badly damaged. I believe the Lord has been looking out for us.

When it comes to the USA – we’re going to need some looking out after.  Which is a somewhat awkward way to put it I think. My thought is the evidence of America’s moral decay and the inevitable squaring up of those records is bound to come. A righteous God will not allow sin to go unpunished or unpaid for forever. Thankfully the Scripture says “His mercy endureth for ever… “ and it says that over and over. But one must take into account the whole counsel of God. And that includes forgiveness – but it also includes repentance – a recognition we’re sinners, on the wrong road and in need of reconciliation to God… and calling upon His grace.

Good works won’t do it… Doing the best we can won’t do it… the only effective way to be rid of our sin is to call on the Lord Jesus Christ who loved us and gave Himself for us. I’ve heard it over and over… and in America you’ve heard it often too… even if you havn’t paid attention. It’s the most important matter you’ll ever attend to – the welfare of your immortal soul.

Here in Greenville, springtime is Bible Conference time at BJU… My wife and I met at Bob Jones… and I asked her to marry me during the Bible conference of 1951… it was a long engagement… but we made it to May of 1953… and here we are almost 56 years, 5 children, 13 grandchildren, 5.3 great grandchildren – it’s a wonderful life so far. But I know I may be talking to someone whose path has not been easy – and who is experiencing right now problems and possibly pain.

There is hope… there is help. I’ll be glad to help if I can and my e-mail address is right at the bottom of this e-blog. I just felt today – there’s possibly someone who needs a word of encouragement and understanding. There are folks out there who want to help. Just ask God to lead you to them.

Well… that’s all for today. I’ll look for you on Wednesday.

“JUST A MINUTE”

NO MORE SOFTBALLS

JUST A MINUTE – George Will, token conservative at the Washington Post leans toward using 75cent words. He set out to make a case against EESA

E-E-S-A. You wouldn’t find two percent of passionate argumenters who could give the meaning of EESA. It’s the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 which Congress passed without reading.

Will, says it erases the separation of powers between Congress and the Executive by letting lawmakers have a say in how the $787 billion is spent. Then he kicked the hornet’s nest at Town Hall Daily where his column is posted and got over 100 comments divided between those who say it’s too late to criticize Obama after you invited the President-Elect over to dine at your posh Georgetown digs – which ignited a mini-war between the elite press corps and the social climbers.

A Tennessee correspondent called him hypocrite-in-chief: a Steward on the Titanic more concerned about a leaky faucet than the sinking ship. Others praised his Constitutional erudition. From all over the map they came – but one writer said rather than join the tea party he’s more inclined to join “the Charge of the Light Brigade.”  Only problem… they lost.

ARE YOU _SURE_ YOU WANT TO DO THIS? - Just A Minute radio for 03-27-09

            Howdy, on a Friday…

This is the week in which Spring bowed in and trampled all over March’s exit reputation… The folks in the Upper Central Plains States sure would not certify that March “went out like a lamb.” I saw some of the Weather Channel reporters leaning in to a 35 mph gale force wind blowing snow the other night… and the reporter said another forty inches was expected.

That was certainly unwelcome news to the folks in Bismark, N.D. where the flood level of the Red River was forecast to get up to 43 feet… That’s about three or four feet higher than the Corps of Engineers had predicted – and of course discouraging to the National Guard… the firefighters and the college students who I’m sure would much rather have been on Spring Break than filling and piling sand bags higher and higher… Problem is when you need to add another three feet to a dike… it’s not a matter of just piling up more sandbags.. there’s a pyramid structure that has to be followed or the levee will break.  Very discouraging… those folks need prayer.  Falling snow is beautiful – mostly – but when you already have an ice filled river… and piled up sandbags… you don’t welcome the sight of more snow falling on top of all that.

Anyway… for some sections of the middle of the country it has been a wild Winter, indeed.

Our economic storm is not abating – at least in any appreciable manner. Even my wife – who does not normally respond to my ‘crisis’ stories on the news – cited by politicos – is getting angry at the antics of those who are supposedly experts in economic matters. Reluctantly we come to the conclusion we are being deliberately manipulated leftward. And I sense determination rising to do something about it. Problem is like Don Quixote and Sancho Pansa – we’re liable to mount our horse and “ride off in every direction.”

We are in dire need of wisdom… and for those who believe the Bible – we really know where that abounds.

God bless you this weekend – and please remember to pray for us and our Nation.

“JUST A MINUTE”

ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS?

JUST A MINUTE – Yesterday Secretary Geithner, proposed a vast expansion of governmental power. He made it abundantly clear to both Democrats and Republicans on the House Finance Committee he wants government to be able to step in to contracts and businesses and see that what happened to create this crisis doesn’t  happen again. And he says he doesn’t want Treasury to have that power.

Just a minute, do we really want a guy who couldn’t fill out his own taxes (no matter how brilliant the President *thought* he was) --- Do we really want him recommending a policy that can totally wreck our system and slide us right into Socialism – do we really want him steering the ship?

Frankly, I can’t think of a more diabolical plan to crash our country and wreck our economy. I’m not masquerading as a trained economist – but even I can recognize a guy planning to drive us off the economic cliff so his misguided leader can pick up the pieces. I’ve resisted ringing the fire bell – but I’m clanging it now.

THE TIME HAS COME THE WALRUS SAID... -- Just A Minute Radio for Wed. 03-23-09

Hello again… right in the week’s middle –

Spring – the Almanac says, is fully here… The equinox came on the 20th – I misread it earlier… And the folks out in Wyoming and Montana who got a really wicked blizzard earlier this week – forty inches plus in some places with over 35 mph. winds – know what a real blizzard looks like.

We have some friends who were driving the Ice Road up in northern Saskatchewan Province – Lake Athabasca – where they have to bring in heavy construction equipment and supplies in the coldest part of their winter when the road people up there can certify the ice will be thick enough – something like 30 inches—to hold up a loaded 18 wheeler or two running in tandem. It’s not a job for the faint-hearted. But I think they must have made it back OK… because no news – which is good news. The bad news is there were some tragic plane crashes in Japan as well as up in that part of the globe that took a lot of lives. Tragic stuff.

Anyway… I suppose you got another large dose of our President reading the teleprompter last evening. We were out at a meeting and so missed all that news as it happened. I hear there were reporters from major newspapers griping because of being skipped over. It seems the gloss has gone off the “magic touch” that enthralled what some are now calling the “lame stream” media. Well… first they threw McCain under the bus… now seem to be turning on Mr. Obama… But we’ll see.

I also picked up the news the curmudgeonly grouse – whose name I’ve forgotten on American Idol – didn’t have time to respond to a White House invitation to come visit with the President. Ah … how soon they forget. But this fellow can be overlooked because he’s not a citizen or voter in the first place… all that stands in the way of being nice is…well, courtesy… and we all know that went out of fashion a *long* time ago.

So… onward toward the weekend is the office grouch’s cry. We’ll communicate again on Friday. (DV)
