REP-ELECT SCOTT SAYS: IT'S NOT ABOUT RACE -- Just A Minute Radio for FRIDAY 101203

Isn’t it great to come inside on a cold day!  And besides that IT’S FRIDAAAAAAYYYY! YEAH!

Frankly, I was very pleased to hear our new Representative-to-be, Tim Scott, say he found it more important to work with all the people you can work with than to try and advance ideals by focusing only on one group of people. Mr. Scott won his race in South Carolina’s first congressional district with a margin of 67% of the vote – which is certainly a good sign for his future electability.

By contrast Mr. Allen West in Florida squeaked by with just 4 percent. Don’t get me wrong – a win is a win… and I’m happy we have another Republican vote in the basket – it should make Mr. Boehner’s job as Speaker that much easier.  So we congratulate and welcome Mr. West to the ‘right’ side of the aisle. And we welcome Mr. Scott’s decision that his interests at this time and at this stage in his Congressional record don’t particularly coincide with the way he sees the Black Caucus operating – perhaps with Mr. West in their group they’ll hear the sound of a different drummer.

I believe there’s little question that people in an overwhelming majority – as the Democrats were in the last Congress – tend to get sloppy or at least fail to pay attention to what their supporters *really* want.  It takes competition to make the market perform better… and the same is true in politics. Whenever one party or the other feels it has the upper hand and can afford to ‘drive a bit closer to the edge’ – sooner or later they will go too far and have to be pulled out of the ditch – usually rather forcibly … and that’s the case with the *current* majority party.  They had a BIG victory in 2006 followed by an even bigger one in 2008… and an abundance of riches is hard to handle if you haven’t been careful before.

I’m not one to teach Democrats their political manners… they are best learned on their own. I know the same is true for the Republican party… Like anyone else, being overweight means you’re not paying attention to your waistline… or exercise or the people who need you to be paying attention… So… I guess that’s a good stopping place for this week… see you (DV) on Monday!

“JUST A MINUTE”

REP. ELECT SCOTT SAYS ‘IT’S NOT ABOUT RACE.’

Just a Minute: Representative-elect of South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, Tim Scott – informed news media Wednesday evening he would not be joining the Black Congressional Caucus (CBC).   He said his campaign (quote) "… has been about themes that unite all Americans--restoring the American dream by reducing the tax burden, decreasing government interference in the private sector, and restoring fiscal responsibility, and I don't think those ideals are advanced by focusing on one group of people.”

Another black Republican-elect congressman from Florida, Allen West, said he does plan to join the caucus becoming their first GOP member since 1996.

South Carolina reaction was mixed. Applause greeted Scott’s stand with –“since having a ‘white caucus’ isn’t appropriate, why is a ‘black caucus’ acceptable? Others speculated Scott might not survive redistricting – but since his victory margin was 67 percent it doesn’t seem likely.

Scott concluded: “While I recognize the efforts of the CBC and appreciate their invitation to caucus with them, I will not be joining at this time,”
