Hello again… it’s WEDNESDAY and ‘hump’ day – half way there halfway back.
Spring has really sprung a good one on us this year… the grass on the back 40 hardly gets the mower off of it till it’s time to cut again – Seemed like the Bradford Pears turned while like someone had thrown a switch. The same thing happened to the red buds… of course the daffodils and jonquils jumped out like rabbits at the start – and wonder of wonders in a little iris garden we hardly knew was there… the’re blomin’ like mad…. All white and looks like we’ll have a bumper bunch of white ‘flags’.
The hedges have a bumper crop of red berries left over from winter that have now started looking like coffee beans – but the most amazing thing is the bee activity. I kept a couple of hives of bees up in North Carolina… but I’ve never seen honey bees … and either bumble bees or borer bees flock around one of the hedges to sip the nectar in really small blossoms, so little I didn’t even know they’re there. So… now I guess it’s the bird’s turn to get those nests built and sit where they can watch and hear the mocking birds – of which we have a goodly flock.
Altogether I’ve seen lots of cardinals, mocking birds, chickadees and a scattering of titmouse couples. We don’t seem to have as many finches as we did in NC… but the house or ‘barn’ finches are out in force… no goldens so far however… and again in NC even though we were in the woods they used to descend like a flock of chickens to the feeder… but there we had not Cardinal #1. Earlier we saw the nuchatches… t hey seem to be around most of the time. A boat tailed grackle or two. In the winter I kept a suet block hanging out back… but figure the birds need to get to the worms now… and the suet block was the favorite snacking place of a rufous bellied woodpecker who visited regularly – but now that the weather is warmer he’s not around. Also we miss the little ‘winter birds’ with their slate grey and black vests or ‘tummies’ as the kids call ‘em… they’ve gone further north now I think. I’m not much on which way and when they go. What I’ve not seen at all so far are the Hummingbirds… maybe next week.
Anyway… that’s a nice break from Harry Reid, and Hamid Karzai exchanging mean glances across the world at one another… so many things are being promised or retracted and the air feels full of ill will… I guess I’ll concentrate on flowers next week… Oh yes… we managed to get the water oak trimmed back a bit so more sunshine on the non-existent grass… One thing at a time… (J)
Have a great day… Cordially, IN HIM
Jack
