Hello again… it’s MONDAY – and we’re off to the word wars once more –
It’s sort of hard to tell who’s on first, or even which issue (war) is being fought over. One thing that has seemed to follow us around is what might be called the ‘nasty’ war. With the Health Care Bill having been fought over and scrambled and sliced and diced twelve ways from Sunday… people seem to have decided to pick up the pieces and throw ‘em at one another.
Even the New York Times and Washington Post have picked up on the theme that the war is getting personal and mean. Seasoned politicians have said they’ve never seen partisanship mount to such extremes. I think that’s probably not a real close examination of what’s gone on before. That is to say if you really want to get into some knock down-drag outs… the politics leading up to the Constitutional convention … even the debates surrounding the “Articles of Confederation” – there were ‘mean’ talkers with not a lot of timidity in those days.
Possibly the factor that makes it even more distasteful is the amount of money spent on campaigns… and the kind of petty angers that grow up in the briar patches each wants to throw the other side into. We are seeing what happens when partisanship outruns leadership over in the
In any case those are problems we don’t have right now… but we may well be headed for something similar. Greece, because of a lack of clear, sustainable policy regarding how many people can be on the government payroll are dragging down the E.U. even though they said they were trying to avoid it.
There’s one clear thing coming out of all this… JUST SAYING IT DOESN’T MAKE IT SO. Actions have to follow words, if there’s going to be progress… otherwise the nation becomes a ship without a sail or a rudder… and there are LOTS of shoals out there were the ship of state can and will run aground. Let us pray more earnestly we may avoid such a plight.
Cordially, IN HIM
Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”
CIVILITY FROM THE WHITE HOUSE IS IN SHORT SUPPLY
Just a Minute: -- Karl Rove, has called the President ‘Moralizer in Chief´ and suggested he just tone it down a bit.
Apparently his questioning of personal motives started with Florida Representative Alan Grayson, accusing Republicans of having just a ‘die quickly” policy for the sick people. So far there’s not been a peep from the White House asking Democrats to dial back the criticism – which might bring reality to the President’s call for a (quote) “basic level of civility.”
Last Friday evening, Mr. Rove suggested if Mr. Obama really wants to restore civility, it would be nice if he advised his Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs, to take the “Administration’s boot off the oil company’s throat.” That phrase is hardly designed to maintain peace and civility in the public arena.
Even major news outlets have picked up on the White House’s knee-jerk reaction, questioning motives and demonizing those with whom they disagree. Some Democrats also need to quit pouring gas on the fire.
