I KAIN'T B'LEEVE I WATCHED TH' HOLE THANG! - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday June 17th 2009

HOWDY Everbody….

Hit’s Wednesday and we’re at hump day – half way there and halfway back.

It’s been a showery week here in the foothills. I’m hoping the showers have made their way to the water table – although the experts tell us it’ll take several years to get the groundwater back up to a more normal level. I’ve not heard many gripes from the boat owners or the fishermen and women. In fact I keep reading and hearing about record sized fish – even one humongous Blue-Cat that dwarfed the fellow holding it.

Somehow – as a kid – we never had the action that was sufficient to keep me interested – or fire my imagination on the water. So… I tried but my fishing flame flickered and even with my first grandson, I don’t think I lit a strong enough flame to get him excited. I suppose something like that comes in the genes.

My Dad was an OK fisherman… he knew how to do it – and seemed to enjoy it – although cleaning was a mess from the git-go – and cleaning the few catfish we caught was really troublesome.  But occasionally we got an eel. That was interesting – and in the early days of our small little settlement on the banks of Craig’s Creek in the backwood wilds of Virginia I really enjoyed being there…  Except for the mosquitoes—and ticks. I could take a pass on those as well as Poison Ivy and Poison Oak.

My Mother was a good sport about the whole thing – and having been brought up on an 80 acre farm right here in Greenville County between Mauldin and Simpsonville – there wasn’t much in the backwoods living she hadn’t already encountered and mastered. We even managed to get sunburned on the shady river banks… but we managed to get dirty too… even on the sandy banks.

Good times all right – but you can’t go home again – as Thomas Wolf wrote. It was always like the second popsicle I bought when I had another nickel at recess. The second never measured up to the taste of the first.

Hope you have a great day.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack
