YOU WANT CHANGE -- YOU GOT CHANGE - Just a Minute radio for Monday 09-01-08

Hello Again… it’s MONDAY – A whole unspoiled week ahead…

Except for the RNC… which is laying off today while Gustaf does his thing on the Gulf Coast – and Democrats try to figure out what happened – and where do we go from here? The announcement that Mrs. Sarah Palin – AKA the Governor of Alaska is Senator John McCain’s pick for his V.P. running mate put everyone in the wonderment mode.

That news was SO well kept and the surprise so sudden the only person I could find on the Internet besides C-Span who had interviewed her earlier this year was Larry Kudlow. He seemed to have a bit of feeling that she *might* be the right one – and he was certainly correct.

Mrs. Palin… It’s hard to know what’s the right term of respect for someone who, despite the MSM’s crow calling for her “thin” credentials which sounds pretty thin to me after letting Mr. Obama off the hook for more than two years. – Is a winsome hockey-mom with five beautiful children… the oldest who will be shipping off to Iraq in September at age 17 or 18 I believe – and the youngest is a six month old Downs syndrome baby who they welcomed into the family. With three big sisters to take care of him it looks like he’s come in for a landing on the right doorstep.

Anyway… (it’s easy to get sidetracked on Sarah’s biography… see already I feel at home enough to call her Sarah – which isn’t appropriate for the governor of one of our 50 states) Anyway… you will, or have, read of her being not a soccer mom --- but a hockey mom in Alaska… plus she got started in pubic affairs as a student journalist, a PTA mom – became a city councilperson in Wasilla, AK… then mayor of two terms (which would have been more except the office is term limited – hoo ray) was appointed by the then Gov. Frank Murkowski to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Commission – discovered corruption on the part of a fellow commissioner – tried to get it cleaned up… was not backed up by the Governor so resigned and ran against him  -- won the primary and the general election against a two term former Democrat governor.

When she took over the governor’s office let the personal chef go – saying she could make the children’s sandwiches OK herself. Did away with the governor’s body-guard as un-needed … (She’s a life member of the NRA as are many Alaskans.) And sold the state’s executive jet on e-bay – saying it was too expensive. She turned back a bonus of the Alaska oil pipeline profits to Alaska taxpayers in the form of a $1200 bonus – and is working on getting a 70 Billion natural gas line built (with opposition from the oil interests) to the lower 48 to help us get over our energy crisis.

Well… there’s a lot more to tell and it will be told by the media especially in the coming weeks… but now this campaign will whiz by in a hurry… so we’d all better get ready to concentrate… and you probably know what I’m going to say next… And PRAY!

The Palin family are born-again, Bible believing Christians, I have it on personal authority from people I know and trust. There will be much more about that too… as the mainstream media will certainly attack her and the family from every possible angle. It’ll be an interesting time but one we need to buckle down – as Christians – and pray for their protection. This is a spiritual battle.  You cover your part of the wall (says Nehemiah) … and I’ll do mine with the Lord’s guidance.

“JUST A MINUTE”

YOU WANT CHANGE -- YOU GOT CHANGE

Just A Minute – last Friday – everybody leavin’ Denver guessin’ about Big Mac’s VP pick – come Saturday morning – the political earthquake hits -- 6.7 on the Richter scale – and John McCain surprises everybody (except maybe Larry Kudlow) and announces Alaska’s Governor, 44 year old, Hockey-mom, former Miss Alaska runner-up Sarah Palin, who has so many interesting points in her bio it’s hard to pick:  I’ll take McCain’s choice: (quote) “She’s exactly who I need to win this race.”

Now the main stream media knots itself in attack mode – throws out the files on Pawlenty, Lieberman, Romney even Kay Baily Hutchinson. Sarah Palin’s hat flew into the ring from so far out in right field you hadda use binoculars; but Christian commentators sure like what they saw.

So unless you’re hiding under an unturned rock, you already know parts of this story and I know some people, who know some people, and we’ll try to get more info by tomorrow -- but if you saw James Dobson’s clip on Fox News, you’ve pretty much gotten the right idea.

THE RIGHT NOT TO JOIN - August 29, Friday, 2008

Hello again – on another GLORIOUS Friday.

We had 6.1 inches of rain at our house this week if the rain gage is to be believed. It’s been dry for so long I wondered if it knew what do if we got more than a few drops. But being a rather simple machine (as in a graduated glass tube) it seemed to function perfectly – confirmed from some additional data from the WX Bureau and the morning papers.

But the political winds are not so easy to fathom. We’re having big push for “card check” – which in my view abrogates the traditionally American practice and political guidemark of the ‘secret ballot’. It’s easy to see how a not-so-secret ballot brings to power people like Hugo Chavez or Robert Mugabe – and we don’t want that here. So…I’m trying to look at current events in the light of history.

Everyone on the tube from right to left seems to be enthralled with the idea we have passed an historic mark in a major party nominating a black man as a candidate for the Presidency. But in the newspaper account immediately following it delineated his heritage as a black father and a white mother. For some reason – unknown to me – the perfectly good word [at least up to now] ‘mulatto’ – which indicates a person of mixed heritage, has not been uttered on any of the news programs (or newspapers) I’ve experienced. Does that mean we have a heightened racial sensitivity – or is it merely misplaced?

For instance somewhere in my reading I’ve noted families with mulatto members were quite prominent in New Orleans society – and some places in the Caribbean islands – and possibly other areas of the world. Yet I’ve also read apparently in American social order a person with ‘even one drop’ of non-caucasian blood is considered ‘black.’ I just don’t follow it. French and English… Norman, Saxon, Greek, Jewish all kinds of mixtures from the Mediterranean area of the world seem to escape being rigidly classified. I’m not as familiar with eastern or even central Europe – but we need only look to the warfare between the Serbs and the Croats or various other “ethnic” groups to know that racial (tribal? Or ethnic?) divisions run deep. In fact we only need to examine the bloody history of various parts of America like Kentucky, Tennessee or West Virginia to name but three to recall deep and bloody “feuding” divisions such as the Hatfield’s and the McCoy’s…

All that to say, I’m sure we’ve passed some kind of marker – but I’m not too sure what to make of it. Perhaps we’re making too much – or not enough?

In any case. America was at least during the last part of the 19th and early 20th Centuries hailed as the ‘melting pot’ of races and heritages into a stronger and more vigorous nation. Possibly because those who came to her shores chose to come – possibly to reject the rigid problems at ‘home.’ In any case we’re here – we’d better do all we can to make the best of it and stop looking over our shoulder.

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE RIGHT NOT TO JOIN

Just A Minute – Do Americans really want join a union? BIG LABOR has recruited Democrats to sell “card check” – which removes secret ballot elections for American workers. It’s the pitch pushed at the Democrat Convention in Denver this week. Labor leaders have insured it’s a goal of the Obama machine starting its roll across America.

Never mind The Mackinac Center for Public Policy demonstrates under freedom, twenty-two right to work states over the past 30 years have lower unemployment, higher rates of job creation, and faster growth in GDP and per-capita income than states that allow compulsory union membership. Right to Work states say workers may join a union if they choose, but may not be required to do so by law.

If you know union membership has fallen from about 21 percent to somewhere in the lower teens you understand why Obama promises to change all that. What Americans need to remember is the Democrats and BIG LABOR leadership want to make it that much more difficult for American workers not to join a union.

HOLD HIT RITE THERE! -- Just a Minute for Thursday 8/28/08

Howdy again folks… getting’ on t’ward th’ Weekend –

And t’day we’ve got a special guest on the program – not usually here on Thursday’s – It’s Miz Pearlie from over at Playfair on the Caroliner line. Since Miz Hillary (Miz Pearlie calls her Hilliarary) has been such a prominent part of this story ever since it started two years ago – we thought we’d ask Miz Pearlie in to evaluate the kind of job Miz “Hilliarary” did on her speech.  So you can hear her on the program… on the audio track or just read the script if her voice and accent happen to grate on your ears.

I’ve just found the folks over at (the full name is: ) “Earl ‘n’ Lester’s Bait Shop and Sushi Bar” on the ‘Caroliner’ line have a rather down-to-earth view of the political world and it’s refreshing to get their take on things when the rest of the news media seem to be getting tightly wrapped around the spindle. So we call on them on Wednesday’s to give us a more ‘back to basics’ perspective. Most people who talk with me about it seem to like to hear them – since the world of politics – especially when it draws close to election time – get’s pretty heavy.

We’d like to hear from you – particularly via e-mail. The address is at the bottom of the script below… and there is a procedure to post a comment on the blog for others to read also. It just seems to get a bit complicated. Or drop me a note in care of WMUU-FM – they like to know people are listening. We try not to take ourselves too seriously.

BLOW OUT- BB#34 Just A Minute for 8/27/08

Howdy Folks… It’s Wednesday in Playfair – and time to check in with Oil-Driller, Billy-Bob.

The report from Billy – fortunately or unfortunately from one viewpoint or another -- isn’t really sterling. He’s had his problems – multiple ones in fact. But you’ll get all caught up on that when you read the script below or listen to the audio track.

For a while I tried recording out in the “oil field” of Billy’s back 40…where he had parked his home-made oil rig, one-lung engine and a pile of pipe…. But unfortunately he started drilling before he started calling – and he got too near the road….and the rest is history – which you’ll hear related in 60 seconds on the program.

It’s always fun to have the group from Playfair around. They are curious, industrious and energetic – almost none of which I’m adept in. So I keep my finger in the pie, so to speak, by associating with these – My people. My father and both grandfathers were cotton farmers… sort of semi-successful I suppose. But successful enough to have reasonably large family on my mother’s side and Dad had an older and younger sister. Is that a charmed life – or does it just require charm to get through it.

I don’t recall that Dad was highly humorous. He did laugh and was not morose. But neither did he fulfill the roles of class clown (I think) or neighborhood prankster. He really was a frustrated farmer. He took his degree from Auburn University seriously. He taught what they called in those days “Vocational Agriculture.” I think some administrator thought Farm Management or just plain General Farming was too pedestrian… so they made it more esoteric with adding “Vocational.”  What else was it to be? A vocation.

Today we hear that Billy-bob apparently missed his – but he seems to be humbled about it – which helps Billy get his sights recalibrated from time to time – and that makes him easier to get along with.

Hope you enjoy yourself in the oil – patch this day.

THE "BOSS" AND THE SENATOR

Howdy again.

If the Democrats are doing little else besides put on a show in Denver… it does appear to be a good one. It has bathos, pathos, suspense – perhaps a large dash of revenge and even a possible long range look with muttered: “Wait till next time.”

No doubt the Republicans have dispatched not-so-secret agents to plant seeds of dis-union (If that’s a word.) in the ranks. Everyone’s speculation is the die-hard Hillary folks – in the well evidenced spirit of their mentors – don’t go away just because the game is over. Especially when there have been slights, and slips and huge ego’s have been bruised at virtually every turn. I must say, the Obama camp gives every evidence of having a tin ear when it comes to sounding a clear note of conciliation.

Madam Hillary, who, by the way will continue in the spotlight no matter who wins the Presidency, as “Queen of queens” – is bound to be a force to reckon with no matter if it is an Obama or McCain Administration. She has been handled roughly in these trying times – and if the Clintons do anything – they repay in kind. There are hurts to be healed and old scores that may be settled long after the original battles have been forgotten. It’s a tough world out there – just ask Hillary and Bill – they’ve helped make it that way.

So, while the country’s economy is on hold – or slipping backwards – and nothing substantial is being done about the energy crisis while the Democrats and Republicans engineer a massive game of musical chairs on Capitol Hill – we’ll just have to observe, these coming results are not inconsequential, nor are they unexpected. What we do need to keep before us is what has come to be regarded as my ever present refrain: In times like these it’s an excellent practice to have God’s word ‘hidden in your heart’ to call upon.

Right now I find great comfort for Bible believers in a verse uttered by one of the Bible’s earliest figures… Job. “He knoweth the way that I take and when He has tried (tested) me, I shall come forth as gold.” (Job 23:10) You can memorize that verse so it will stick with you, in less than five minutes. If you repeat it for ten days in a row it will be yours for LIFE! What a promise… from the creator of the Universe.

“JUST A MINUTE”

THE “BOSS” AND THE SENATOR

Just A Minute – It’s quite a jump from Beijing Olympics to Mile High Denver – but ‘that’s entertainment’ – which seems to be the unintended theme of the Democrats’ convention.

Today’s biggest buzz on the broadcast traffic net in the Mile High City is, there will be a massive tangle on Thursday when “The Boss” – music slang for Bruce Springsteen – is rumored to be in town to join Senator B.O. onstage for his acceptance speech in the 75 thousand seat home of the Denver Broncos.

All the campaign talk about Senator Barak being ‘like a ‘rock star’ is apparently on its way to morphing into truth as sleuths ferret out details. It’s going to be “like Berlin all over again” if one is to believe the rumors rocketing around Denver.

If the behind-the-scenes conversations are true – and that turns out to be the high-water mark of Obama’s coronation as the Democrat’s standard bearer – we are liable to have one of the most turbulent four-year periods in American history. May the Lord protect us.

WHY THROW GRANNY IN THE KLINK? Just a Minute for Monday 8//25/08

Well… hello again on a Monday – the last full week of August.

If you watched the Olympics you probably found there was no dearth of spectacle and seeming new things to see about China. What you *did* see you should *not* mistake for openness – according to experienced China watchers. I was surprised to find a new (to me) blog about China written by the Washington Post’s Outlook Editor – but he takes off his editorial hat to write it.

John Pomfret has a very interesting history of journeying to China, hangin’ out with the young guys – and soaking up the culture. He worked in China for the AP and I believe became their bureau chief there. It seems to be a semi-tradition – as David Aikman – who wrote a book that’s gone into several editions entitled “Jesus in Beijing” acquired a great deal of his knowledge of Chinese people and the culture while he was working in Beijing for Time magazine.

In any case, the facts I put forth in today’s JUST A MINUTE were gleaned by Pomfret while the Olympics were in full swing. Two elderly ladies, Wen and Wu, had their houses “flattened” in one of Beijing’s government ‘rehabilitation’ projects – apparently very similar to the ‘eminent domain’ cases up in New England that caused such a stir last year and opened a whole new can of worms for the ‘big government’ types running loose. But the way in which we learn about the Beijing police jerking these two elderly folks around is rather sharp edged.

They apparently simply tried to put their protest out to the people via the three specially designated protest zones where the police planned to safely isolate trouble makers. But the Beijing police have a thing or two to learn about grandmotherly determination. What has been learned is: Protesting in an officially designated protest zone is a pre-approved ticket to the Chinese “hoosgow” (sic) according to Pomfret.

“Don’t show up if you don’t want to go up [the river.]” Continues to be the operative phrase for official protesters in current Chinese society. Promfret describes it as very “brittle.” Sounds about right. I hope the Grannies don’t have any more trouble and that they do get some fair compensation for having their houses ‘flattened’ by the Beijing Bullies.

“JUST A MINUTE”

WHY THROW GRANNY IN JAIL?

Just A Minute – Here’s an Olympic follow-up.

John Pomfret’s day job is editing the “Outlook Section” of the Washington Post – but because of his extensive experience living in China he also writes a blog about China’s inner workings. Now that the “BIG SHOW” fades from American TV – he says two 70-year old ladies, Wan and Wu, were denied permission four times to protest in one of the officially designated ‘zones.’ They were detained, Pomfret says, tried by the cops – not a judge – and told “if they behave, they won’t have to go to a labor camp.”

It’s a picture, Pomfret says, of what China is like on the inside. Very brittle – if you actually want to protest in a protest zone, it’s virtually guaranteed you’ll end up as an “opponent of the State.”  Thus: “[China] send[s] a signal to people it won't tolerate threats to ‘stability’ and if they think the Olympics are heralding a new era of freedom, they'd better think again.” He adds – “the party has put Chinese malcontents on notice. We should take notice as well.”

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO COMMON GROUND? - Just A Minute for Friday 8/22/08

            It’s really Friday – no kiddin’ – !

Even tho’ the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune – turn out to be political that doesn’t mean we have to get down in the same mud hole. Today’s JUST A MINUTE details a fact I did not know until the other night. Be sure and read it down below or listen to the audio track.

Cal Thomas and Bob Beckel are on opposite sides of the political fence. But Cal, I know, is a born-again Christian – and there is an account written in WORLD © magazine about Cal leading Bob to the Lord some time ago… which – although they are on different sides of the political fence – makes them brothers in Christ. I’ve not read the book and know very little about Beckel, for he’s from a totally different background and location than I am. But I take the point they make that the American political scene could use a lot of cleaning up and cleaning out. That is to say pure and simple manners and treating one another with civility and respect would be a good place to start.

There’s hardly any civil discourse on the tube or in political campaigns these days. Even among conservatives, people are so intent on making their point and winning the ‘match,’ they interrupt one another, raise their voices and generally end up engaging in conflict that contributes a lot more heat than light. This even spills over into local and relatively low level races. It’s a contagion that needs to be curbed and contained. Anyway… there’s a lot more than I can say or observe within 60 seconds… so read their book… It sounds like a winner. I know Cal to be a Christian gentleman who acts like one on TV and off – and Cal vouches for Bob, so I think that’s a good place to start.

Surely we will often see things from different viewpoints – but being disagreeable and unmannerly does not *have* to result from that. There are people you’d just as soon not associate with – but there’s no need to be boorish about it and descend to their level. We need to – in the words of Scripture –“… not let your good be evil spoken of.”  Our real first concern in Christian love ought to be for the welfare of one another’s eternal soul – not winning a political race.

“JUST A MINUTE”

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO COMMON GROUND?

Just A Minute – Democrat consultant Bob Beckel and Republican columnist Cal Thomas – have together written a book entitled -- “Common Ground.” They agree American politics is presently in trouble and wonder how we got here?

My thought is we have more political strategists and consultants in campaigns from dog-catcher on up – and nobody likes to lose. So if you’re losing and nothing seems to be working – go negative.

Karl Rove – former advisor to President George Bush – was asked about that by Sean Hannity, and cited a campaign in which he said every day for five months one candidate attacked the other and the other simply refused to respond. Who won overwhelmingly? -- George W. Bush in his TEXAS gubernatorial campaign. Immensely popular incumbent, Anne Richards, hammered Bush every day – Bush let it pass and was elected. At her death in 2006 he said: “Her charm, wit, and candor brought a refreshing vitality to public life.”

That’s class folks – the kind we can use now in this election -- and we could use a good dollop of it right here in Greenville County.

CALIFORNIA HOME SCHOOL VICTORY - Just A Minute for 08-21-08

Howdy folks –

I’m just a bit tickled at the news we have to relay to you today.  It seems California has finally exhibited some commonsense – but it wasn’t without a struggle.

Back in February, I think, the second District Court of Appeals in Los Angeles ruled – having listened to the NEA and the National Teachers Union – that parents did NOT have an ‘unfettered’ right to dictate their children’s education. The case came before them because it was alleged two parents – or perhaps sets of parents – had abused their children who were being home schooled. And the Court ruled in favor of the NEA and their crowd.  [The abuse matter was handled separately.]

But when word of the initial ruling got some publicity the parents of 166,000 kids who were being home schooled in the Golden State set up a howl – and they set out to show the Court the decision was wrong. The parents’ counsel cited study after study showing parents were sending their children to private schools or home schooling them because 1) they were concerned about their safety – 30%; 2) they did not want their children being taught about morals or sex or things that were contrary to what the parents believed religiously – another 30%; and 3) their home schooled children were doing as well or better than other children on standardized state tests and acceptance for college admission – so the parents thought *they* would be better able to educate their children – that was about 16% of the respondents.

All in all, the Court paid attention to the outcry of the homeschooling parents – and agreed to re-hear the case. Where the NEA et al made their mistake was in responding to the Court’s invitation to participate in the re-hearing. Then the judges re-heard the arrogance of the educational experts making light of the parents’ concerns about safety, religion and effectiveness and reversed its own decision. The three man panel wrote an opinion that boiled down to something like: It’s not the business of the court to make education policy or law – that’s the business of the legislature. Further they found the parents do have some rights when it comes to making decisions about how their own children are educated, and those should be listened to. There are regulations governing home schoolers, and the NEA etc. were pushing for requiring parents to be licensed as teachers. The evidence showed home schooled kids were doing as well or better than those educated by the “licensed teachers,” the Court ruled the requirement parents be licensed was excessive and not within the purview of the Court to mandate.

So… It’s good to have a victory on this front. And it helps to show the Educrats ought not to be able to dictate to parents on educational policy for their own children. Great! Let’s pray that’s where it ends.

Just A Minute – In California the Second District Appeals Court says homeschool parents don't need teaching credentials to educate their own children.

Three judges overturned their own February decision saying: (quote) "It is important to recognize it is not for us to consider, whether homeschooling should be permitted in California. That job is for the Legislature … we endeavor to interpret [the law not make] it."

Truancy penalties had been applied to parents of two students after abuse reports. The California Teachers Association accepted the court’s participation invitation saying:  "Parents do not have an unfettered right to dictate terms of their children's education."  But families of 166 thousand homeschooled children exploded and the Court agreed to rehear the case.

Studies revealed parents were homeschooling for safety concerns, religious and moral reasons, and a conviction they could do better than government monopoly schools. Additionally, homeschooled children perform as well or better on state exams and college admissions.

It is a rare victory but no longer can government education monopoly argue the courts say homeschooling is unconstitutional.

It’s good to have a WIN to report!
