IT'S BEEN A TOUGH WEEK ON THE PRARIE - Just A Minute Radio for Friday Aug. 7th 2009

Howdy Folks –

Indeed it is Friday – and I’m thankful. This has been a week about twice as long as usual. I’m not sure exactly why. Sometimes I wake up in the ‘dead vast and middle’ of the night as Shakespeare said. And don’t get back to sleep easily. But they say that’s part of ‘maturing’ [if they are being kind… or they just say “old” otherwise. Well…not too bad considering the alternative… Still I’m content… most things don’t hurt – at least not very long.

This Cash for Klunkers is a mystery to me. How can we be so … well, the word that comes to mind is ‘stupid’ – but I see someone well known in political circles got himself in a jam using that word… so I’ll take a pass.

It just seems wasteful to do what ‘somebody smart’ thought to do. I’m about as amazed as I was when seeing my Dad with his tax return and papers spread out all over the dining room table…I was maybe 8 or 10… and I asked him what he was working on. He said, ‘I’m paying my income taxes.’ – What for? I asked.

“Everyone has to pay income taxes.” – he said.

“For doing what?  Just making money?”

“Right.” He answered.

“It doesn’t make sense to me,” – I went away scratching my head. --- And I guess I still am. I’ve also never fully figured out why an empty piece of land has a certain tax to be paid… but when you *improve* it by building something on it… you have to pay *more* -- Someone will explain that to me in my old age? I’m still waiting.

These are the same people who figure out that the way to keep the fiscal system of the USA from collapsing is to borrow $787 BILLION dollars we don’t have and throw it at whatever comes along…hoping something will work. … I think we’d better figure out how we’re going to get the ‘barter’ system to work. I know up in Wytheville or Abington Virginia they had a theatre that ran on that proposition… the people could pay with produce or a turkey or something valuable. And then someone came along and invented a medium of exchange – and called it ‘money.’ And began charging interest – and inventing taxes… taxes on taxes like Taxing Social Security benefits.

I think all this stuff comes from an ‘extra terrestrial’  personal notebook dropped by a Dr. Spock type with pointed ears… money, taxes… stimulus… that’s where it all started.

OH well… it’s Friday… I’ll go lie down a while. (J) Have a great weekend.

Cordially, IN HIM

Jack

“JUST A MINUTE”

IT’S BEEN A TOUGH WEEK ON THE PRARIE

Just A Minute – President Obama is all ‘het’ up about what he calls the ‘Astro-Turf’ movement among his opponents. If you’re having trouble with that label, he means opposition expressed this week in the “Town Hall” meetings is manufactured grass-roots – not real.

I’ve been looking carefully and it seems pretty real to me. Apparently the folks down in Granbury, Texas, an area of about 50 thousand some 35 minutes southwest of Ft. Worth, think so too – but so far they can’t find their Democrat Congressperson, Chet Edwards, who was once mentioned as a likely Obama running mate.

Edwards isn’t formally noted as one of the ‘Blue Dogs’ but he seems to have made himself scarce to the people who want to talk with him. At 2 PM on Wednesday afternoon the Mayor Southern, some City Commissioners and organizer Josh Sullivan – worked up a “Where’s Edwards” Rally on Paluxy Rd. there -- but no Edwards. Constituents from Granbury, to Waco and College Station also called his offices asking when they can talk with Edwards face to face, but so far all they’ve gotten from Edwards’ staff is: “We don’t know.”

So we’ll keep looking -  I’m Jack Buttram
