HE'S FROM OBAMA'S HEALTH CARE AND HERE TO HELP... - Just A Minute Radio for Monday August 08, 2009

            Howdy once again… It’s MONDAY and another week, plus another month begins.

 

            And it looks as if we’re being asked to junk our Klunkers (I’m still glad to be driving mine) and turn ‘em in for a bunch of government IOU’s. I’d be careful about that! In fact I’m beginning to think we’re all going to have to think up something to facilitate the ‘Barter System’ if government continues to print money. We could get in the same fix another country did when they figured it was cheaper to burn the money than to use it to buy coal.

 

            Oh… that’s an apocryphal story (I hope) – although my father worked for a while teaching school when he was being paid in South Carolina Scrip back in the ‘20’s when the State ran out of money. [He decided to get another job.] Right now California is doing the same thing. Issuing its own IOU’s to be used to ‘temporarily’ tide them over until they can figure out how to get back on the fiscal track.

 

            This seems to be one of the biggest problems. The bankers don’t know what to do – and from the noise I heard over the weekend on the talk shows (networks and weekend pundits) it doesn’t seem like anyone else is coming up with a system either. When they come up with some kind of hare-brained government program that even Michigan Republicans say is the best spending they’ve done so far… and RUN OUT OF MONEY IN FOUR DAYS --  I don’t think I want *these people* to be put in charge of health care – and running out of Band-Aids or something more serious.

 

            I think we’d better borrow a phrase from President Obama’s apology about his Cambridge Police incident. We need to *re-calibrate* our financial system and get it out of the hands of these clowns who want to buy your car – crush it – and give you an IOU.  Congress is worse!

                                                           

            Maybe we need to get a clearing-house for good ideas and not let a single government employee work there.

 

            Oh well… it’s Monday… How blue is it at your house?  Let’s start over by remembering the first thing. HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE.

          Just A Minute – “Oh - don't worry, Granny, he's from Government Health Service and here to help.”

          Britain now controls health care costs by rationing. The UK’s (NICE) National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, decides who gets treated using a metric called "quality adjusted life year." If the brilliant scientist, Stephen Hawking, couldn’t pay for his own care, he would not be sustained.

          Surely the U.K. must have known a quarter of Medicare cost comes in the last year of life.  It’s horrible recounting people who die while waiting -- or are simply denied treatment – but Brits are praised for spending half as we do on medical care. They’ve successfully put a price tag on human life: now we’re  being asked to.

          An adviser to the President is Oxford and Harvard educated bioethicist Ezekiel Emanuel. Yes, -- brother to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel – who writes the June ‘08 AMA Journal  that it’s possible to mitigate physician attitude on the Hippocratic Oath.

          Is that what America wants?
