I DON'T PLAY PATTY CAKE -- Just a Minute for Monday 08-10-09

            Hello… it’s MONDAY again… and time to work…

 

            Sometimes I like to get down to earth on a Monday morning and get a good start – so I was looking at the entry in today’s Almanac and I was taken up to space again. On this day in 2003 Yuri Malenchenko – who was in space, said wedding vows with Ekaterina Dmitriev who was on earth … becoming the first  (and only I guess) couple who have managed such a feat from such a distance. So… that’s not very down to earth. But congratulations to Yuri and Ekaterina on their sixth wedding anniversary!

 

            But here’s one to balance that out… tomorrow, (I’ll announce it today since I won’t be on here tomorrow) tomorrow August 11^th is officially the END of DOG DAYS. There, I hope that brings us all back to earth… we’ve got a lot to do here with helping the President save the world and all – I just knew you’d want to volunteer.

 

            On today’s program I line up my take on the jawing back and forth between TV – more particularly cable TV personalities. There’s been the somewhat infamous O’Reilly vs. Olbermann mud sling contest… refereed by North Carolina’s own Charlie Rose… who has abandoned the Tar Heels for New Yawk. And now that the Bill and Keith Show has been cancelled… Keith and Grace are picking at one another… I wouldn’t care so much if they’d just stop interrupting each other. And cut down on the yelling. Maybe we ought to suggest establishing an anti mean-talk bureau… that should appeal to those who think government can solve *every* problem.

 

            Some days I get a bit of encouragement from reading the news… then somebody comes along and drives their Mercedes – oops…BMW through the curbside mud puddle and I’m out of sorts again. Well, no sense wasting the day grousing over bad news… that won’t clear up anything. Just remember – Happiness is a choice.

Just A Minute – The ‘news’ wars are something like memorizing baseball statistics. It’s a hobby – and if you keep up with Bill O’Reilly vs. Keith Olbermann  – back in June they were like little kids on a muddy playground.

Finally Charlie Rose, acting as umpire, suggested a ‘truce’ because these two egos were liable to hurt their parent corporations. GE is the biggest company and GE does NOT want you NOT buying their toaster because of Bill or Keith. So Bill and Keith had a meeting, I didn’t see it but apparently it damped the distraction.

Internet sources say Bill makes about $10 million to Keith’s $7.5 or so –  both have outsized egos; and Bill shares offensive habits with LOTS of other TV twits -- he interrupts and overrules. All lack basic manners, they’re interrupters not interviewers.

I know about time – Why do you think we call it JUST A MINUTE? But manners and politeness ought to be a TV requirement -- if they can’t pass my test – the off button is my cure. May I suggest you try the same?
