WHEN THE TUMULT AND THE SHOUTING DIES -- WHAT'S LEFT? -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 100702

            Howdy once again – we’ve reached the end of another week.

 

            This one’s been a beauty!  Hot and humid every day… with a few scattered showers and showy thunder but not a good steady soaking rain… although not having it gave us something to talk about… which is one of the purposes of the weather anyway isn’t it?

 

            Well… I’m not going to deliver myself of my usual Fourth of July espousements – (I’m not real sure that’s a word… my spell checker doesn’t think so – and I’m too fenced in here and it’s late at night – too late to dig out the huge unabridged dictionary that we bought in sections years ago through a grocery chain… I think it was Winn-Dixie … they pulled out of South Carolina some time back I think.) Anyway… upon reflection I’ve decided it’s probably not a ‘spouting-off’ – as I think it ought to be, but somehow they’ve tied it into weddings and spouses and proposals and all that… too complicated.

tiate – and I *still* can’t get it across to them in Dublin, NH that I much prefer the *Southern* edition.  That gives me the tide times at the mouth of the Savannah rather than Boston Harbor… and the sunrise/set times are closer to be accurate… but they are still off enough to be aggravating… I believe they use Atlanta’s long/lat to be more precise.]  But I get up at the same time anyway.

 

            If you don’t check the OFA you miss important stuff like this:”The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists the traditional timing as the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11. At this time, the Dog Star, Sirius, rises with the Sun. Sirius is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major.”

 

            See… you’d of never picked up that July 3^rd (tomorrow) is when the Dog Days begin… well… maybe you might of…We have a fairly educated audience.  I know there are a lot of you out there who are just longing to write President Obama and instruct him on correcting his recitation of the poem written at the foot of the Statue of Liberty – which always gets a good play around the 4^th…  The other day on TV… he said in his inimitable professorial way:

 

Give me your tired your poor

            Your troubled masses yearning to be free…

 

            Never realizing that the word in that second line is “breathe” – not be – Of course if you don’t breathe… you soon will not be… so I guess  the point is moot.  But perhaps it gives those who think the President probably wasn’t born in the US anyway, another bit of ammunition.

 

            Well… I know most of you never read this far anyway… if you do… HAVE A HAPPY FOURTH – and be careful with those cherry bombs… Lord willing we’ll see you with us MONDAY!

WHEN THE TUMULT AND THE SHOUTING DIES – WHAT’S LEFT

 

Just a Minute: -- Robert C. Byrd was a Senator of the old school.  Even though in Congress he enrolled in night school to fulfill what he determined was his duty to West Virginians.  He gave early signs he was devoting himself to be all he could be in representing and serving his State.  They returned him to his legislative duties nine times.

He became a genuine student of history and despite being crowned “King of Pork” –  in which he took pride as serving his people – yet he realized the need to rise above partisanship when needed – and in his particular way contributed to the determination that bespeaks America.

He loved to quote philosophers and poets – he epitomized these words written by William Shakespeare:

Glory is like a circle in the water.

Which never ceaseth to enlarge itself,

Till by broad spreading it disperse to naught.

            He also realized the truth of this brief couplet – to which more politicians and celebrities would be wise to attend.

“Fame is but a slow decay

Even this shall pass away.”
