I always thought that I was giving a fair tip, until my son went to work as a waiter in an upscale restaurant - Calif. Dreaming!
He brought home more tales about being stiffed by groups that he had exercised himself to serve in the very best way he could. He always went way beyond great service, trying to meet their expectations.
His job was giving him the extra money he wanted to have to pay for things he wanted to do, so it was not a 'critical' job, and he learned far more in it than he expected.
I use these rules for tipping - any food service from$5 up to $14 - deserves a $3 tip on the table, after that 20% for the basic work then sometimes I add more for the extra care.
Hi Carl -
Great to hear from you. Thanks for the comment. -- I once had a restaurant stiff my daughter and daughter-in-law with bad checks after a week's hard work. I put on my dress-for-success outfit, carried my lawyer looking briefcase and went to the restaurant just after lunch time. I walked up, laid the briefcas on the counter... took out the checks marked "insufficient funds" and told him the girls would not be returning for work and said: "I've come for the money." Without batting an eye -- he went to the cash drawer, opened it counted out the money -- and I left. It's crazy the things people think they can get away with.
Cordially,
Jack
