CHAFFEE CALLS PALIN "WACKO." - Just a Minute for 9-12-08

            Howdy – it’s FRIDAY… Tomorrow sleep late?               

 

            Dr. Bob Jones Sr. used to point out it’s possible to tell a lot about a man by who his enemies are. If he’s a good man and been around a while – he’s probably collected a bunch of scoundrels who hate him. Well… the same thing applies in the political world. You often can get the drift of how much a person is committed to a line of action – or how firmly he/she holds to a position by being able to recognize who is in opposition.

 

            Sarah Palin, and the compelling story that half the Washington news corps is scouring over Alaska is seeking either to corroborate or punch holes in, is no doubt used to that kind of opposition – when turned inside out becomes a sterling endorsement of character. If you’re disliked by all the gangsters in town… then you must be doing something right.

 

            So – I’ve heard or read several Washington or New York correspondents say this is absolutely the most interesting presidential election contest they’ve ever witnessed. And I agree with that. The campaign thus far has had enough twists and turns to fill a paperback novel – and we still have fifty odd days to go… The “odd” part can’t get much ‘odder.’

 

            I hope you have a good weekend – And perhaps you and your family will celebrate in your church this weekend the blessings of liberty we have in America and the freedoms we take so for granted. I sent an excellent story around to our kids by e-mail yesterday. It came from a newspaper correspondent in Sydney Australia… who expressed one of the best understandings of where we come from as Americans and where we are headed – or at least aiming toward – that I’ve read in recent memory.

 

            You’ll be doing yourself and your family a huge amount of good by reading the Bible together – and meditating on the blessings we have here in America by God’s Amazing Grace.

CHAFFEE CALLS PALIN “WACKO.”

Just A Minute – One of the best ways to determine character is to take note of a person’s enemies. By that standard Gov. Sarah Palin must be judged as having received a ringing endorsement from a certified, ten and a half-carat,  gold-plated RINO Republican from Rhode Island – Lincoln Chaffee.

For years about the only thing marking Chaffee as a Republican was his first name – Lincoln – which he said he inherited from the Civil War President -- Abraham. He took positions often at odds with his GOP brethren barely voting with the Republican caucus in organizing the Senate. Now that he’s left the party he’s come forth with his own assessment of Governor Palin saying she is (quote) "a cocky wacko” and that her selection as John McCain's running mate has “energized supporters of Democrat Barack Obama.” (unquote)

He’s reported to be a very handy man to have around horses. He studied horseshoeing at the University of Montana. His father was a Senator before him in fact Lincoln was appointed to fill his deceased father’s senate seat.

LIPSTICK ON WHAT? -- Just A Minute 09-11-08

Howdy again…

 

            Today we take up the matter of misspeaking. President Nixon’s press secretary used to say the designated word was “inoperative” – that is something had come up that made it no longer accurate. His first name was Ron… and my index box of names has gotten too crowded in my memory and new stuff has pushed out the old stuff. I’ll remember his name in the middle of the afternoon.

 

            Anyway – watching Senator Obama blame the McCain – Palin ticket for his puttin’ the lipstick on a pig gaffe – is I suppose a forecast of what we have to look forward to between now and November 4^th.  Obama has already hung up himself to dry with the flippant crack that trying to tell when life begins is “above his pay grade.” That’s language used by slackers and second tier government officials who just don’t want to go to the trouble.

 

            It’s not likely anyone who has not been under the white-hot limelight of national media attention, has a feel for how frustrating it is to be trying to speak plainly but having your words misunderstood no matter what your intentions were. I recall in the Goldwater campaign of 1964 the Senator had little patience with persistent reporters and also sometimes he didn’t hear the question accurately. But he usually gave a short answer – sometimes very short with words that needed editing. And those of us who complained to the writers after they had gotten it mixed up would urge them on by saying: “Don’t write what he said… write what he means”  All well and good if you happen to be good at reading minds.

 

            But we might as well recognize the battle that is forming. One of the reports I read today said “half the Washington Press Corps has descended upon Alaska trying to find something they can use on Mrs. Palin the Governor.” One of the factors working against her now is the animosity the MSM has toward people who are NOT *insiders* in the District of Columbia. To a large extent they talk to themselves (not all but a majority) and if you’re not part of the club you’re not likely to be listened to but rather laughed at.

 

            That’s OK… I think Gov. Palin will hold her own quite well – but undoubtedly she’ll get tired of it. *I* get tired of it just being an observer.

 

            Well… we’re on the journey now to the election. We may as well settle back and enjoy the trip.

LIPSTICK ON WHAT?

Just A Minute – “Don’t try to be cutesie” my wife sometimes whispers in my ear.

Barak needs Michelle to discreetly whisper that in his ear. When a guy is off the teleprompter – and the audience is responding -- cutesie often attacks.

That’s what happened Monday – Obama, holding his stick mike, searching for an idea -- hits upon “putting lipstick on a pig,”-- and said it. Next morning all three major networks lead their morning news shows with that clip – and who does he blame?  -- The McCain – Palin campaign.

McCain, stretching for an answer to Saddleback Pastor Rick’s question: When are you rich? – “Oh -- five million I guess. – That’ll be distorted.” he says … and he was right!

Answering Warren’s question about when life begins? Obama first appears pensive … then flippancy takes over…”That’s… that’s… that’s above my pay grade.”  

Put a guy in front of an audience, without a script or speechwriter, afflicted with cutesiness and that’s what you get. Oh -- quit whining, remember: “Better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth – and remove all doubt.”

OTHER INDICATIONS OF WINNER - Just a Minute for Wed. 09-10-08

Howdy Folks –

 

Doesn’t seem possible – we’re half way through the week. Next thing you know it’ll be election day.  Are you registered?  If you’re not --- well unless you’re just forgetful I’m not sure how much I want to ‘goad’ you into registering. If you’re just not that interested – then I for one am not interested in prodding you to go to the ballot box and cast an unthinking ballot for whoever crosses your mind.  Maybe that’s an unorthodox view… but I guess I’m not really for poking and prodding people to go to the polls just to say you’ve voted. I’d rather you stay home if you have no more interest than that.

 

Now if you’ve moved or don’t have a way to get to the registration place or some other hindrance, by all means get someone to help you – and while you’re at it you want to learn what the issues are – particularly the local issues so you can hold your elected representatives responsible for the things  they say, the promises they make – and let’s be honest for the sacrifices most of them make to be involved in public service. I’m not sure I want those calls coming to me at 3 AM … even in the White House.

 

Tomorrow is the anniversary of 9-11 – and I’m a bit tired of this incipient, flippant language that denigrates our President. We have NOT had another terrorist attack on a major scale since the twin towers, Pentagon and those gallant folks who gave their lives in a Pennsylvania meadow defending our freedom. Obviously he’s had a lot of help, and gallant people died on that day plus those who have died in defense of our nation – and so we wouldn’t have another tragedy. To have come through that period as we have was not something many of us would have expected seeing the violence and scale of the 9-11 holocaust.  For that I think we first owe our thanks to God and then our President and his assistants and most of all to the gallant men and women of our armed services.

 

Of course America isn’t perfect. No nation is. But when I look at the way our nation responds to natural disasters… tidal waves, earthquakes and how we are restrained from places like Myanmar, Mugabe’s part of Africa, Darfur and places where man’s inhumanity to man runs amok – I am proud to be an American and to hold forth for the freedoms that we have and enjoy – especially our freedom to worship God.

 

And for those whether in Britain or Europe or here at home who seem to be in a continual gripe – I’m not very sympathetic. I’m glad you have the freedom to NOT believe whatever you don’t want to believe. Just do it somewhere out of my sight or sound. Our Lord is ever gracious and the old King James word is ‘lendeth.’ But you should not presume upon His mercies.  I’ve said enough.

Jack: Maybe -- there’s a Tax Revolt going on.

Jack: The states are quite similar but Wall St. Journal economic writer, Steve Moore, says there’s a big difference in taxes.

BB: Really?

Jack: South Dakota has no income tax and the American Legislative Exchange Council, says it’s a top destination for folks on the move.

Jack: But North Dakota is losing people hand over fist -- confirmed by United Van Lines.

Homer: Whut’s happenin’?

Jack:  Professor, Richard Laffer, at Ohio University, says North Dakota’s high taxes has them right behind th’ eight ball.

BB: Whut’s a-gonna happen?

Jack: The Republicans in North Dakota have a ballot “Measure 2” reducing a 5 percent income tax by half – as well as corporate taxes.

MizP: That’d be change all rite.

BB: That’s not the change Obama has in mind.

Homer: Naw…he wants givvermint ta' be bigger ta' hep peepul.

MizP: They don’t need no hep to git poor.

YOU WANT POLLS - YOU GOT POLLS - Just a Minute for Tuesday 09-09-08

            Howdy again folks…

 

            We’re slipping into the silly season for polling and campaigning. With only about 56 days left until the contest is decided – everybody enters the sweepstakes trying to outguess the other on what’s happening in the collective voters’ mind. Complicating the calculation is the ancient electoral college. It becomes a guessing game with many unknown factors.

 

            In November 1948 everyone *THOUGHT* they knew Tom Dewey would win the election. The Chicago Daily Tribune’s infamous headline still resonates in encyclopedic accounts of mistakes news media made. The grinning, President Harry S. Truman is pictured holding up the Trib’s front page headline in huge type. DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN. So… we’re perilously near going down that same road again.

 

            Nothing is more dangerous to a political campaign than overconfidence. Conservatives have felt for so long like a “long-tailed cat in a room full of rockin’ chairs” they are close to making Gov. Sarah Palin into something she is not and doesn’t claim to be – perfect.  As a Christian she knows we are all at the same level at the foot of the Cross…only sinners saved by God’s grace.

 

            Better tone down the rhetoric, pull in the horns– and say what we know who we are and what we stand for rather than have to lose in humiliation. “Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18.  We need only be reminded of the recent cases of Governor Spitzer and Senator Edwards.

YOU WANT POLLS -- YOU GOT POLLS

Just A Minute – I don’t really care for polls at this point in election cycles. They’ve let me down too often to be trusted. But then I sneak a peek – to see if they say what I want to hear – and that’s the problem.

If you want polls… here’s a number: REAL CLEAR POLITICS averages out a lot of polls… but their current composite number yesterday had McCain ahead by three points. “Don’t trust it.” My gut says…

Look a little deeper: CNN says it’s tie. Rasmussen (who says the most accurate numbers will show today after the conventions) He has McCain ahead by one; USA TODAY/GALLUP says McCain’s ahead by ten. I don’t trust that one either… on the other hand… Oh stop wishing! See what I mean? History says the one who’s ahead at Labor Day crosses the November finish line first.

So tomorrow Billy-bob and friends will do their analysis. We’ll look at interesting numbers coming out of the Dakotas – small states but big samples – and a windsock quite a bit removed from the hot air blasts of New York, Chicago or Washington. Be with us then.

THE BIG BANG IS OVER - Just a Minute for 09-08-08

Howdy Folks…

 

Hope you had a good weekend and are ready to settle in for the week. We’re here for the long slog until Nov. 4^th brings relief from the slings and arrows war. Hopefully we’ll catch a break from the media madness… but I only see a little ‘sensibleness’ around the edges.

 

Strangely enough the New York Times caught a glimpse of the ratings the ‘Fair and Balanced’ network is doing and since their readership – along with most major city papers – has been sliding (and the used car lots are all tapped out of advertising funds) they thought they might turn back to news *reporting* for a change rather than editorializing all over the place.

 

So a friend sent me an e-mail clipping from the Saturday NYT which actually was fairly balanced and had some straightforward facts in it. Now I mustn’t be carried away – one robin doesn’t make a spring – the old saying goes. But it was uncharacteristic for the Times – at least in my opinion.  Maybe the weather has already turned cooler in Wasilla. Nobody reads the Saturday paper so they figure they couldn’t do too much harm.

 

Anyway – today’s JUST A MINUTE is a break from the drone of politics for a while… we hope to make it last. I think as several observers mentioned, having her (Gov. Sarah) in that news mix is a breath of fresh air. But those of us who believe in prayer… should take a deep breath… get down on our knees and pray for her and her family. Satan is going to unleash everything within his grasp to discredit her and make Senator McCain’s picking her, get very uncomfortable. It’s coming – so brace yourselves and get a grin on your chin.

 

Today… take a pause to sort of ‘smell the coffee beans’ which I’ve heard a lot of people who don’t drink coffee say they like to do. It gives them a comfortable feeling. And we could sure use some of that.

THE BIG BANG IS OVER

Just A Minute – Well, the big bang is over and the world still turns.

I gathered this couplet from the OLD FARMER’S ALMANAC: It is the summer’s great last heat, / It is the fall’s first chill: They meet. – by Sara Morgan Bryan Piatt.  No – I had never heard of her either – but she is an American poet born in Kentucky – in August 1836 – died in New Jersey December 1919. Served as American consul in Ireland; ranked as the strongest American woman poet of the nineteenth century after Emily Dickinson. I should have known. 

Why mention it? Just to realize what we miss by ignoring the almanac. For instance -- did you miss Ramadan beginning on September 2^nd – I did. Or know the official starting gun for fall -- autumnal equinox occurs on the 22^nd at 11:44 AM. We’re at the peak of the hurricane season with draughts the Old Farmer’s predicted on its 2008 cover.

Oh yes – Jupiter will blaze in the southern sky from nightfall until about eleven – and just in case you missed it -- we’re in an election year.

CURTAIN CALL FOR McCAIN - Just a Minute for Friday 9-05-08

Howdy again… IT’S FRIDAY – and none too soon!

 

Only 60 days to go and we think (in the absence of another Florida hanging chad debacle) we’ll cast our votes in the only polls that count, and find out who wins the race for the 43^rd President of the United States.  We had the longest primary race in American history – which leaves us time for the *shortest* race between the nomination process and the actual election. In my view we need to do some *serious* revising of this mess to avoid another marathon like this one – with a sprint to the finish. It’s the political Olympics all over again.

 

We awake today with what most observers believe to be a brand new contest. You’ve seen it written all over the place in the middle of last year John McCain’s contest was – in the judgment of most political pundits – found dead by the side of the road. For they had already crowned Lady Hillary as the next nominee and were setting about to name her Cabinet.

 

But the Lord intervened – it appears – on his behalf, and his ‘dead’ campaign, revived, got up and started running again. Then through the Spring and early Summer ennui set in compounded by malaise and the campaign dragged. Obama, who had pledged originally to stick to public financing of the presidential race – having had some considerable success at fund raising through the Internet and via special interest groups, decided to break his promise and go with the greater numbers of dollars available from private sources. This had gone on for about 19 months.

 

The selection of Sarah Palin – Governor of Alaska – and a certified pro-life, Christian conservative reformer was a natural for “Maverick” McCain – and the rest, except for this chapter which you and I and the rest of the electorate are currently writing – as they -- say is history.

 

Aren’t you excited to be a part of it?

CURTAIN CALL FOR McCain

Just A Minute – Another week of conventions comes to an end – thankfully. And a lot of water is over the dam.

Consensus seems to be liberal commentators have done a great job of irritating both conservative Republicans AND many Hillary supporters by their attacks on Sarah Palin. Sampling liberal blogs and CNN, I saw several self identified moderates who’d been leaning towards Obama now in the McCain-Palin column. The culture war may claim its first victim in Barack Obama.

First rule when you find yourself in a hole – “Stop Digging” – but that seems to have gone wanting in St. Paul -- Mrs. Palin not only eased fears but injected excitement in conservative Republicans while giving Democrats a reason to worry. So – should they maintain the attack or change the subject?

          My take is, it’s like Bre’r Rabbit’s plea to Bre’r Fox… only it’s “Please keep on attacking Governor Palin.” It’s still 60 days to go to November 4^th… but the caissons are rolling along.

STUMBLING IN THE DARK - Just a Minute for Thursday 9/4/08

Howdy… it’s Thursday – almost to the end of the campaign marathon.

 

            It’s going to be a day out of sync because of the time that elapses between when the news happens and when I can get it through the system and on the air. So today’s JUST A MINUTE deals with the events leading up to the actual acceptance which comes on Thursday but won’t get on the air here till Friday.  Sorry… them’s just the realities of the thang.

 

            But I think you’ll get from the narrative I try to portray today and tomorrow the sense the ground beneath the race track has shifted over the last few days. Whereas the Republicans were sort of half-way pumped up – and campaign pros like Karl Rove said the gap would close before election day… the placing Governor Sarah Palin’s name in the race has effected a marvelous change in outlook.

 

            My take has been the GOP electorate (the base if you will) has been on a sort of “I’ll vote for him (McCain, but not enthusiastically.” And just about every body from ping-pong coaches on up know you don’t win the contest that way. So… down inside I felt rather depressed by the whole situation . But there has been a game-changing development by McCain picking Sarah Palin – the less than two year in office governor – as running mate. I really sense there’s a big change coming – possibly already here… the polls will tell (maybe). So I’ll give more observations tomorrow on the air and here on the blog. (I’m not sure anyone reads what I write here anyway.)

STUMBLING IN THE DARK 

Just A Minute – Last Friday our liberal Washington media got its plug pulled. ‘Maverick’ John McCain did the unthinkable and picked a ‘maverick’ Alaskan governor for his running mate. The reverberations ring from Minnesota across the nation.

The first opinions stories posted Wednesday on the Washington Post’s net blog were awash in crocodile tears about “poor John McCain.” It was pitiful -- and sickening. Amidst sounds of circling wagons, battening down the hatches and preparing to throw the Visigoths back across the moat – it’s liberal news media inside the Beltway, tazered and choking now on a huge swallowed panic button. They’ve gotten a glimpse of ominous signs of a conservative and angry tidal wave washing over Washington – which they can’t bear to let happen.

I’m not writing today about Sarah Palin’s speech – you’ve seen it or heard about it – and it’ll be hashed-over and re-minced for the next two months.  Fred Thompson, former Tennessee Senator returned first fire Tuesday night, so the game’s afoot. For the first time in a long time it’ll come down to principle over politics.

            Hi Folks…

 

            Well the campaign speeds on apace … I said yesterday – and then fell prey to some bug… possibly too much paying attention to the 24 hour news channels. Anyway … today I’m laid up with a stomach that won’t stop churning. Sorry to complain.

 

            But the folks at the Bait Shop and Sushi Bar (Ugh … that’s not what I want to think about right now… boat rockin’ baiting hooks… cleaning fish – not for me today.)

 

            In any case I think it’s a passing upset and hope to be full speed tomorrow.

MORE AND MORE CHANGE - Just A Minute for 9/02/08 - Tuesday

Howdy folks. –

 

            Yesterday was a biggie with “Gustav” nearly doing a repeat on New Orleans (and giving them a preview of what they still need to do (mainly with tax money from the rest of the nation) to make New Orleans bullet proof (maybe) against storm surges and other damaging things from the passing hurricanes. And we may have to contend with “Hannah” coming to visit South Carolina – let’s pray just to fill up our lakes.

 

            Then came a BIG surprise! Senator McCain’s pick for VP, Sarah Palin, has an unmarried daughter five months pregnant. Hardly good news for any family but especially for a candidate who has and wants to continue to run on a family values ticket. Nonetheless the Palin family made the best of what could be said – greeted the news with happiness over a new grandchild’s arrival – and the impending wedding of their daughter, Bristol, to her husband to be – with appropriate non-attention from Senator Obama’s camp [except for ‘snakehead’ James Carville (his wife’s name for him -- not mine)] … thus the campaign proceeds apace. It is certainly a far superior solution than aborting the child as advocated by many – and shows the depth of love and family unity of a Christian family in a crisis time. What does it do to the McCain – Palin ticket?  For one thing it demonstrates the value of a totally defenseless human life that needs protecting. It’s not something we would want to have confront with any family – but it happens – and no one makes light, or excuses it. It simply shows the love of Christ manifest in a family.

 

            Now comes the GOP speeches… and I generally think they are among the least important things that happen in a campaign. I happened to see the famous (or infamous) line uttered by Barry Goldwater in San Francisco in 1964. It was the one and only convention I’ve attended… and while exciting, it foretold a huge defeat – in fact it held the record of fewest states won that stood until George McGovern came along a few years later and carried only his home state.

 

            Well politics is a noisy, expensive and for the most part I think, unenlightening exercise – but we do it. Very little of what gets dealt with in campaign speeches comes to actual fruition. There are good intentions I suppose but more often they turn out poorly if at all. Man for all his vaunted intelligence and ingenuity still seems to have big trouble ruling himself. May the Lord lead us to HIS conclusion of this matter.

“JUST A MINUTE”

MORE AND MORE CHANGE

Just A Minute – Every day this convention is totally new. The GOP lead yesterday was the surprise announcement the Palin’s expect a new grandchild in December -- it almost overwhelmed “Gustav’s” visit and news of the refugees. 

Yesterday I promised more information on Governor Palin: I talked with a personal friend, fellow pilot and alumnus of BJU, now retired from a church he planted 30 plus years ago in Wasilla where Sarah Palin was Mayor for two terms. He tells me she’s a believer, smart with a clear-cut testimony; he gives her a totally thumbs-up recommendation.

As to her not having foreign relation experience, I’m reminded Alaska is the closest part of the U.S. to Russia. Only three miles across the Bering Strait --the two continents are barely 55 miles apart. Negotiations about navigation and fishing rights go on there all the time.

Politically she’s made her mark in Alaska, defeating a sitting governor of her own party, and topping a two-term Democrat to win the office. So, I think the “hockey-mom” will hold her own in tough contests.
