AIR CHANGES A COMIN'? - Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday 120418

Once more I’ve gotten snuggled down behind the 8-ball and here I am after midnight trying to make sense out of what needs to be said.

Actually on this day there is so much conversation going on between the ‘regulars’ that I hardly get a word in – but today it slacked off a little. Miss Pearl seems to be worried about the election and the things that are going on – or in some cases like producing a budget or a plan of trying to get the economy on an even keel or put the wheels back on the track from whence they came off – we make progress or on some days we seem to slip back a considerable distance.

This particular hiatus seems to be the slowy – sticky variety. I think most of the candidates, especially the newbies – the freshmen, are still trying to get on the pace of things and figure out what’s the next thing to do (Or NOT to do – as in the case of Mr. BHO.)

So I’m certainly not in a sharp enough track to think sharp as a tack and exercise my brain correctly. So for both of us I think it better to toddle off to bed and be available for all hands tomorrow. IN the Washington cycle Wednesday seems to be an exceptionally busy time. I don’t know if it’s cleaning up all the messages they carried back to the Hill from being at home, or the fact that there are so many things they promised themselves they *would* get done on this cycle and it looks like the time is already running out. I just seem to sense in these days a continuing stream of urgency and I guess it being an election year and all that’s not unusual.  For House members I think it’s exceptionally tiring and they are always in a hurry-up mode or a wait-a-while mode which ends up being a whirlpool swivit before too many weeks get by.

And speaking of weeks and bye,.,.. well the Supreme Court has already declared itself in recess until the Fall.  (Which I guess is what they did BAC then – BAC stands for BEFORE AIR CONDITIONING – because Washington can be a real steam closet in July and August and especially the New England gentlemen wanted to get away from ‘Foggy Bottom’ with it’s malaria and mosquitoes – well you get the picture if not agreeing with the excuses.

So… See you tomorrow D.V. and look forward to another day of joy and blessing – and maybe some rain.  (WE sure got a soaking for about 15 minutes today.)  God bless you and your family. Write if you get work… and don’t bother with that part about ‘hanging by your thumbs’ a-la Bob & Ray … or was it the Joy boys of Radio at WRC who said that. I can’t remember.

Cordially, IN HIM

SWEDEN'S RECOVERY IS A PERMANENT TAX CUT -- Just a Minute Audio and Text for Tuesday 120417

Hard as I try I still often make the same mistakes. It’s a good thing the blameless Gremlins are still hanging around to hang it on. (J)

Some days I can’t believe it myself.  The times I go in the kitchen, get there scratch my head and say: to myself – “Now I wonder what I came in here for.”

Some say it’s the early bloomin’ Alzheimer’s. I don’t think so…  It’s the Spring crop of pollen that attaches itself to your car windshield and all – or makes you sneeze…. {neeceein they sometimes call it} in any case it’s bothersome, especially when you show up and can’t remember the name of a good friend you went to school with 25 or 55 years ago. The word for the condition is “AGGRAVATION!!!” which must be shouted out as loud as you can while watching a film or in some other solemn and stately process. Anything that makes you embarrassed enough to turn pink from collar up to ear tips.

Ah yes it’s Spring and time for gardening and birding and grass cutting (more pollen or something sneezy) – and the thought of Spring finally getting here – all the time while feeling sympathetic for the folks in the mid-continent area were the weather has been particularly mean and violent.

I am thankful we didn’t have snow and ice on top of all that – although I know in some areas of the country even that is not a boon but a bane.

Well… since there’s precious little we can DO about the weather, except to pray and thank the Lord for sparing us another tragedy and praying for those who *have* experienced loss. I know there’s little we can do other than help one another and I think seriously about those who have suffered loss especially (Think RED CROSS, Good Will, Salvation Army and other ministries in which people put themselves out *willingly* to help others and the less fortunate.) It may be coupled together with physical infirmities or losses in the family – even sickness and so forth. The thing to remember above all is the Lord’s love for us – I know that strikes some people as unthinking or blind faith – but it’s not and the only way to combat the desperate feelings that result is to commit it to the Lord – knowing and believing HE will make it right.

That’s all I can convincingly say – but I DO say it, and I DO believe it with all my heart because the evidence is there if you will but trust HIM. HE will make it right if you will make it right. And If you care to write, I’ll do the best I can to explain the truth that I’ve experienced – and others with me have also.  Don’t grumble or whatever in your rebellion. HE WILL make it right if you trust HIM!  I know so.

God bless you and keep you in the hollow of HIS hand!  Amen!

Love you… see you tomorrow!

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

SWEDEN’S RECOVERY IS A PERMANENT TAX CUT

Just a Minute: Sweden’s discovered an economic “gold mine” – or more correctly Sweden’s Finance Minister Anders Borg has. Minister Borg (b-yorge) aiming to permanently pare down their ‘Socialistic’ government has apparently stumbled upon that which other governments – including our own – have simply stumbled over.

Three years ago Minister Borg insisted on a permanent tax cut and in generally socialistic Sweden he was labeled an economic ‘lunatic.’ Borg, stuck with his paring knife – while Spain, Portugal, and earlier the USA, were all arguing for large temporary stimuli.

We now observe which economic policy was correct.

Very little of the stimulus went to reducing the debt. Where have we heard that song before?

Monday’s Wall St. Journal reports: (quote) “Tax cutting Sweden, by contrast, had the fastest growth in Europe last year [while celebrating] the abolition of its deficit. … Just in time for the 2010 election in which the Conservatives were re- elected for the first time in history…”

Journalist Fraser Nelson writing in the Spectator April 14th expressed his surprise the Europeans had not learned their lessons from the ‘70’s and ‘80’s.

*MARC THIESSON* SAYS WOMAN PROBLEM IS OBAMA'S - for Just A Minute Radio on Monday 120416

Sometimes our memories get confused – or confusing!

In this situation Mr. Obama’s memory is apparently working overtime and falling off the rails – thus mistaking what ‘he might have *wished* was so for what really *is* so.

The polling done with real election results is ‘confused’ with the ‘what *might have been* in his mental configuration. It’s a rather common mistake – at least according to that famous story teller Mr. O’Henry who managed to sell many a short story with that kind of ‘surprise ending. I think he’s the one who got me really interested in seeing what could be done with the *written* word when it is spoken in hurried ways or under the pressure of dire circumstances.

So… perhaps we should cut Mr. Obama a ‘little slack’ once he’s safely out of office and we are not engaged in running up another 5 trillion dollar debt in a three year span – at least we can pray to that end.

I’m hoping and praying the ingenuity of businessmen, bankers, retailers and honest wizards of Wall Street (If there are enough of them left.) to give us a boost out of the fiscal and economic hole [more like a Grand Canyon] which the trusting American public has dug for ourselves being mesmerized by the smooth talking Senator and community organizer who managed to talk his way into the White House in the election of 2009.  Thus he joins the ranks of Jimmy Carter, exceeding his conquest by 300% or more and fooling the American electorate into falling for the efficacious double-talk and rainbow-land expectations that you can make something out of nothing.

It’s something learned at the slight of hand shell games and magicians’ ability to pluck quarters out of the ears of astonished six year olds.  Or the fever that makes one think he can always throw the hoops over the right figurines to win the giant Teddy Bear on the Midway.  Best cure for that is a good cold glass of lemonade – but you pay dearly for it. (So my Father used to tell me!)

Glad to have you with us…

“JUST A MINUTE”

MARC THIESSEN SAYS WOMAN PROBLEM IS OBAMA’S

Just a Minute: Marc A. Thiessen – Washington POST/AEI fellow -- ‘opinion writer’ – says the ‘woman problem’ is on Obama’s plate not Romney’s.

Last week the POST writer said (QUOTE):”With polls showing Mitt Romney losing ground with women voters, many in Washington have been buzzing in recent days over Romney’s “woman problem.” They’ve got it backward: It’s Barack Obama who has the problem of support from women.

(quoting again)When he took office in 2009, Obama’s job approval rating with women had reached 70 percent; today it has slipped to 49 percent — a precipitous decline of 21 points. This is why the President has been working overtime to court the women’s vote — weighing in on whether women should be admitted to the Augusta National Golf Club; publicly taking the side of a female Georgetown University law student in her spat with Rush Limbaugh; and forcing religious employers to provide [medical coverage] for contraception and abortion-inducing drugs.”

I must admit… I’m surprised to see such an opinion appear on the pages of the POST. <I’m Jack Buttram.> (END)

MICHAEL BARONE SIZES UP THE ODDS -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 120413

The race perhaps isn’t ‘officially’ over – certainly Newt does not admit it – until the ‘fat lady sings’ [according to Yogi of the Yankees] – so not wishing to mortify various people I won’t point any fingers. I’ll just toddle on in the direction of  the finish line while we discuss the prospects of what’s going to happen.

Independently I reached the conclusion that Mr. Rasmussen’s calls had the highest number of accurate or near accurate results. So, his posting in the mornings is the data I generally trust the most. Mr. Barone also reads his and the Bloomberg data because theirs are the two polling efforts that restrict themselves to likely voters. (I guess it’s cheaper and sometimes more fulfilling to poll more or less as the wind blows.)

In any case a survey is a survey – even ‘for real’ elections are sometimes deep in the weeds, as we learned almost 12 years ago when the Bush vs. Gore race got lost in the Florida Everglades – and the New Englanders for some reasons haven’t given up on arguing about it yet! So Voting… especially in the ‘flexible’ (make that read ‘machine’) states like Illinois just order up what they need from ‘downstate’ to make a close election come out close to them. Strong rumor *still* has LBJ winning his first try at TX congressional politics by 97 votes down near the border – and I don’t ever expect to find a Congressional Committee that can dig up data to contradict that.

Well…enough about ‘crooked’ politics. There will never be enough honest people to *completely* close out the crooks. But with prayer we can either make a dent in the result or prevent it from having the effect the crooks desired.

OK…It’s the end of the week, my stomach is growling in a most unwholesome sound. So I’ve got to go for this week. But keep on praying and we *will* find our way out of the wilderness by the Lord’s grace. Have a great weekend – and we’ll be together again on Monday!  Amen?

God Bless you all… IN HIM,

Jack & Barbara

“JUST A MINUTE”

MICHAEL BARONE SIZES UP THE ODDS

Just a Minute: Michael Barone, is one of America’s reserved and unbiased observers of political trends and outcomes. He’s one of the trustworthy political pundits I’ve seen he doesn’t have his own ‘ax to grind.’ Here are a couple of his reasons why Romney’s margins aren’t so great right now.

“One reason is his campaign and the super PAC backing him have spent most of their ad dollars battering down successive rivals who rose in the polls. The positive case for Romney has gotten much less of an airing.

“But general elections involving sitting presidents usually turn out to be verdicts on the incumbent. Challengers who meet minimal standards tend to win if most voters want the incumbent out.

“Which is, or is close to being, the case today. Note that the two national pollsters who limit their samples to likely voters, Rasmussen and Bloomberg, show the race a tie. … [However] polls show this year, unlike 2008, Republicans are more enthusiastic about voting than Democrats.”

I’m praying the news continues to be good. <I’m Jack Buttram.> (END)

IS 'FAIRNESS' THE GOAL OR 'BUFFETTING'? -- Just A Minute Radio for Thursday 120412

We’re making tracks for the high roundup – at least that’s what we keep telling ourselves – and trying to keep up the spirits of those who suddenly found out their journey has come to a sudden and not totally unexpected stop before the last station.

It’s hard when the word keeps going out: “We’re going on down to the very end… “  And then the END comes suddenly with no reprieve…I’m sure it’s difficult for all the passengers and crew. Believe me – I’ve been there. I don’t contemplate going back.

But that’s the way we have elections set up in this Republic. Doubtless there are better ways to set it up – and better results each one hopes for. But if you’re going to play in the “Big Leagues” these are the kinds of sudden stops that harden those who think they are willing to pay the price. It’s the same in sports, in Fine arts like acting, singing, playing in the Big Time orchestras -  there comes an end and often it is ‘sudden’.

So much for the philosophy.  I’ve been peripherally involved and principally involved in both winning and losing…or I should put it the other way around… Losing is MUCH tougher and you don’t want to readily walk off into the same swamp twice. But there are paths to follow that are useful and instructive and have their share of hard knocks and significant rewards. One must understand that before stepping out on the field or on the batters box or wherever else you’re expected to ‘hit it out of the park.’ It doesn’t always happen.

But I’ve found if you’re a Christian and trusting the Lord and not yourself or putting faith in other men and women indiscriminately – in the long run God takes care of His own – and He doesn’t let His Children down. (except when they need to be let down – think Moses, Jonah or Daniel or Joseph) – there are wonderful and beautiful lessons in each to be learned and even more precious and valuable when you learn them directly from the Master’s hand and Voice.

Well… now there I’ve hit the top of the soapbox again… but I’m climbing down….maybe to give you a chance to climb up. God often does things that way,

Look around, pray, meditate and take the words of the Bible to heart. They are there for you – AND for me. [Be not wise in your own conceits.] God is great – God is good – All the time!

God bless you and yours this very day.

“JUST A MINUTE”

IS FAIRNESS THE GOAL OR ‘BUFFETTING’?

Just a Minute: When President Obama first proposed the tax on millionaires, was it ‘for real or just political talk?’ He declared he said the 30% on those making over a million a year; (quote) “could raise enough money [to] stabilize our debt and deficits for the next decade.”

Sorry Mr. President – your own Treasury’s numbers say at the most it would raise less than 5 tenths of one percent of the 2012 deficit and less than one tenth of a percent of the $45.4 trillion you plan to spend in the next decade.  That’s bad math Mr. President.

Asked about the yawning error, Jason Furman, White House aid was quoted as saying (quote): “The tax was never intended to bring the deficit down and the debt under control.” Well for goodness sakes what was it intended to do?

This is the kind of double-speak we’ve put up with for the past three and a half years. The so-called “Buffet rule” is supposed to produce fairness not truth. Come next November – let’s go for TRUTH.     <> I’m Jack Buttram. (END)

THAT WAS A GOOD-UN! - Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday 120411

There’s a ‘missing tooth’ in the lineup.  We had a computer component fail late in the day Monday so we spent the rest of the day in ‘chicken with the head off’ mode – and just barely got the materials in the right hands Tuesday morning to make the daily sked… but it took a lot of praying and pushing and --… so here we are with the missing tooth ahead of us…

But never fear – reinforcements are here – and show up in unexpected races and places.

We’re very thankful for the various talents scattered amongst our family – and friends. Through those connections we were able not to miss a program on Tuesday and continue on down the pathway toward a consistent flow of commentary. We do thank you for your interest and we’re looking for many more happy returns.

My wife’s birthday was Sunday… and a grandson’s b-day was up in West Virginia yesterday…. And just as I was ‘going to press’ with this one at night I remembered I had promised to call him about bed time.  (Sigh) but my bedtime is much later than his so… I’ll be making it up to him when you hear this.

Mr. Santorum retired from the race yesterday afternoon – in case you missed it. Now we’re on our way to the nominating conventions – and we won’t go into the fine points of how we got there or what’s going to happen now… all in due time my lovlies – things will sort out as the Heavenly Father wills – and all those who choose to will be happy for it.

Now…I’m falling asleep at the keyboard… happy that things are flowing along… we’ll talk about it more later when we have more news at hand. So thanks for sticking with us. We are happy to be on the air as planned today and will expect to follow right on through the season.  It was a beautiful day yesterday was it not.

God be with you all and keep you in the hollow of HIS hand.

NOW TO DEAL WITH THE DAY AFTER? -- Just a Minute Radio for Monday 120409

Well, it was a beautiful weekend in more ways than temperature – although that was very nice.

One of our not *extremely* pleasing memories was a snow that came on April 4th.. several days after April Fool’s Day. It keeled over a couple of not very productive pear trees in our front yard.… But this time of year is often puzzling. I can recall people (my aunties mostly) telling me ‘Easter came very early this year’…. Or the obverse – ‘it was very late’. I never knew just when Easter would come since I had no coherent reason to know just what was the date – not like Christmas or Thanksgiving…

OK… just part of growing up… but I still find it hard to figure out just when Easter comes… so I just give up and look at what’s written on the calendar.

But I think there’s a part of it that should resolve itself. It is a more important day than Christmas – and with all the jiggling the dates around I suppose we’re more likely to hit an accurate date of the “real” day of Christ’s death – because it did happen on a real 100% real day – still in the wisdom of God this manner of observing the day is better – and on another day when I have my wits better about me I’ll explain why I think so.

Meanwhile let us know and realize the magnanimity of Christ leaving Heaven to come to Earth – and knowing scope of the torture  he was about to experience… it makes it all the more an expression in reality of God’s love toward us in wiping out the terrible record we have brought on ourselves. Let us get to the real meaning of celebrating Easter – the forgiveness of sin – its erasure from our record – and the cleansing God provides which no other way could provide. Thank you Lord thank you thank you!

I happened to see a film that played over the weekend depicting Martin Luther’s ordeal in going through his youth and coming to understand what was wrong with the way in which things had been distorted by the church of the day around the forgiveness presented in the scriptures and misinterpretations when the truths of scripture were hidden from the common people – well I’m just greatly impressed with how Loving God is in the way HE has provided salvation and understanding of it for us.  Thank you Lord!

May the Lord bless and keep us all in the hollow of HIS hand. Amen!

“JUST A MINUTE”

NOW TO DEAL WITH THE DAY AFTER?

JUST A MINUTE: Today is “Easter Monday”… the day after it became a provable fact Jesus has risen from the dead. The Bible speaks of it like this: Now when Jesus was risen early … he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, and she went and told them that had been with him, and when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, they believed it not.

He appeared in another form with two of them, as they walked, to Emmaus … And they went and told it to others – they didn’t believe either. Twelve different times he appeared after this illegal murder… Afterward he appeared to the disciples … he appeared when Peter miraculously drew in a net with 153 fish – all of it’s in the New Testament … Also Jesus words: Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (These words are all taken from New Testament accounts – You may read them for yourself.)

These are hard facts, from real people -- not just legends. He is a good man, not just a teacher but more exactly -- He is who He says He is -- the Son of God!

WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT GOOD FRIDAY -- Just a Minute Radio - Friday 120406

This is the most revered holy day of the year because it signifies the sacrifice Christ so willingly put upon himself in the sacrifice HE made for mankind’s sins. Without it we would be lost indeed.

Tis the Friday before Easter Sunday. How do you know the date of Easter Sunday?  It’s related to the full moon and I’ll just quote you a short paragraph – and you can go from there. :

Easter Sunday is the date of the annual celebration of Christ's resurrection. The aim of the Easter Dating Method is to maintain, for each Easter Sunday, the same season of the year and the same relationship to the preceding astronomical full moon that occurred at the time of his resurrection in 30 A.D.

The main thing to remember is Christ is our redeemer. Those who desire to follow HIM declare their allegiance, and through the professions of faith and the waters of Baptism become His disciples. It is not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to HIS mercy He saved usTitus 3:5.

I’ve promised those who want one to get them a copy of God’s word to use – It’s very similar to one I had given to me as a High School Student in Virginia. That coupled with the training I got from my parents and the churches we attended made plain the path to Christ’s Heaven outlined briefly in the last section of that little New Testament.

I know the Lord will provide the means to get HIS word to any who sincerely desire to know it…

AND THAT’S WHAT’S SO GOOD ABOUT GOOD FRIDAY!

I’ll look for you next week – Join Us For Just A Minute!

WE GIVE MR. OBAMA CLARIFYING TIME -- For Just a Minute Radio on Thursday 120405

Today we’re trying to sweep the clouds away and make things ‘perfectly clear.’

A week or so ago, Mr. Obama spoke near what he thought was a ‘dead’ mike and made BIG news.  Suddenly the private conversation intended for Mr. Medvedev’s ears and to be passed on to Mr. Vladimir Putin the newly RE-elected President of Russia – became the topic of discussion in newsrooms around the world.

Mr. Obama indicated in a covert tone to Mr. Medvedev, that he was unable to as “flexible” now about missile defense as he will be able to be *after* his last election when he is returned to the presidency for a second term.  Mr. Medvedev cordially assured the President he would pass along that news to Mr. Putin at the first opportunity.

Missile Defense is a huge issue in Europe now – and indications are keeping Russia ‘within bounds’ while some neighbors within the old USSR neighborhood (Iran primarily) want to be free with their own missile program ASAP.  That’s a dark cloud hanging over the European community because of the instability of new nuclear powers.

The President tried to make lite of his gaffe and revealed intentions, and only succeeded in muddying in the waters. Relations between the US and Russia are strained on this matter right now. Sanctions on Iran do not seem to be slowing their determination to be nuclear and to be antagonistic toward the west and particularly toward Israel. That’s a big problem for US – Israeli relations and for the rest of the world.

So on the brink of a Presidential election in which there are many issues – especially those involving armament or defense against aggression – by a hostile power against an American ally that could upset the applecart “big time” – But Mr. Obama seems to want to be holding his cards close to his chest and perhaps using his desire to ‘apologize’ to every regime in sight – to the detriment of our country and our economy – well, plainly all aspects deserve close attention particularly in the mid-east where hostilities are, it seems, a way of life.

There are many threats and unsettling forces at work in the world. As Christians we need to be alert and open to friends as well as the not so friendly – but we must particularly be careful not to let our own ambitions get in the way of solid foreign relations – and also honor the pacts we have made with our own allies and areas where we have missionaries and brothers and sisters in the Christian World who look to us as dealers in ‘righteousness’ who will not betray or turn aside from helping less fortunate neighbors to maintain their freedoms.

Let us strive for a clear vision of what we should be doing and how we should be meeting the challenges of this world at this time.

Just this week I was re-reading Psalm 34 – and recommend it to you also.  If you re-read God’s word and pray over it – in all its aspects, you will be in God’s will doing what HE wants done in accord to HIS Holy word and the Holy Spirit.

At this Easter time when we celebrate the love of God demonstrated by HIM sending HIS son to pay the price for OUR sins and render to us the promise of eternal salvation for those who trust in the Lord – let us read our Bibles and listen to the messengers of God’s Word, to the betterment of this sinful world and the salvation forever of many needy souls.

May I encourage you to read the Bible and here is one verse from the Psalm I mentioned: “Oh taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusteth in Him.” Ps. 34:7

May the Lord’s blessings rest on you and your family… and if you’ll join us tomorrow we’ll examine just what is good about GOOD FRIDAY.

Cordially, IN HIM

 “JUST A MINUTE”

WE GIVE MR. OBAMA CLARIFYING TIME

Just a Minute: A listener to my recent commentary about President Obama, took issue with my approach by writing this about me: (quote) “Mr. Butler [sic]presented an ignorant diatribe against President Obama…triggered by the President’s ‘open mike’ snafu and almost went as far to say that Obama wanted to turn our country over to Russia and would have the flexibility to do so after the election,” he said.

It was Mr. Obama who described to The Russian President, Demitri A. Medvedev the [quote] ”flexibility” [unquote]  he expects to exercise have after this his [quote] ‘last’ election. The former Russian President went on to say he understood the message about ‘space … space for you’ he said, “I will transmit this information to Vladimir.”

Two points I would like to clarify: My name is Buttram not Butler -- and with your international expertise and connections, perhaps you can inform us of exactly what it is President Putin, outgoing President Medvedev, and yourself along with President Obama wish to be so secretly ‘flexible’ about when it comes to missile defense. We all have an interest.  <> I’m Jack Buttram – spelled   B-u-t-t-r-a-m.  Thank You.
