HAPPINESS MAY NOT BE ALL IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 11-13-09

            Howdy everbody, on this Friday – end of the week….

 

            I ran across an interesting discussion about Happiness. One person has written a book about ‘positive thinking’ may be a curse for America. (I don’t think so.) And another Australian professor in New South Wales Australia has even gotten scientific about it.

 

            He puts people to looking at a cluttered table in various lighting situations… and finds a dingy day brings out more perception and remembrance in people than sunshine.  I wouldn’t have thought it would work out that way. And I didn’t get to read all his research (don’t know if I’d understand it anyway) but I thought it interesting.  He also says people who are somewhat ‘blue’ – pessimistic – are better observers and more persuasive than “happy – happy types.”  Of course all of  these things require a lot of carefully couched words.           

 

            It just seemed a bit startling to me to find that being morose and a bit sad was a help in some cases.  That’s about as much as I can sort out. It was a story in the Weekend Edition of the WSJ last Saturday 11-7-09… if you want to run it down. As they say – “Every dog has it’s day.”  I guess that’s even true for the sad looking Bassett Hounds. (J)

HAPPINESS MAY NOT BE ALL IT’S CRACKED UP TO BE

          JUST A MINUTE: We’re often counseled to “Just Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella?” And Americans are always getting an earful to be cheerful when that may not be best for them.

          Barbara Ehrenrich’s book “Bright Sided” takes the view that America’s insistence on positive thinking is delusion, a snare.  While a professor of psychology from Australia University of New South Wales, Joseph Forgas, seems to re-enforce that position with his sadness research which he says puzzles evolutionary psychologists.  He says the obvious benefits from Anger, Fear, and Distrust may take you out of danger’s way in time to survive; but the benefit of sadness is harder to pin down.

          Dr. Forgas finds people who are feeling ‘blue’ are better able to assemble facts and be persuasive with others.  But Icelanders – until recently – were ranked near the top of the scale of the Word Database of Happiness developed by Erasmus University – While at the same time he toys with the inside out maxim: Bliss is Ignorance.

          I guess I’m an incurable cheerful.

            Howdy Once again Pardners….

 

            Great to see you out here on the open range again.  We’re so glad to have you along to participate in the program honoring our Veterans.  It’s a real pleasure to say to our men and women who have put their lives and the sacrificial efforts of their close and distant relatives on the line in the defense of our country.  Perhaps that’s what causes the blood to rise when we have something happen like the tragedy that took place at Ft. Hood this week – or the constant stream of coffins that come back from theatres of conflict like Iraq and Afghanistan.  The world’s a dangerous enough place without enemies from within.

 

            My elementary school days were spent in war years.  I can recall notebook covers carrying the picture of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who we regarded as the hero of Bataan.  He vowed to return from the war arena from which he had been taken during the early days of the Pacific Conflict, and he was successful backed by the great manufacturing and training effort mounted by America in the wake of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

 

            America has spent treasure – and more importantly precious life blood – in foreign climes trying to preserve freedom and keeping our shores largely free from foreign aggression.  It’s little enough we do on November 11^th each year to honor our valiant defenders – and show the appreciation we owe them.  Thank you Ladies and Gentlemen of our Armed Services.  We are proud of you – and place you among our honored heroes.

 

            May the Lord cause His face to shine upon you – and give you peace! Amen.

Homer: Why cawl hit Armistice Day, Miz P?

MizP: Oh Homer, if’n youd jist thank about hit a bit you’d know.

Homer: Well… Ah’m a thankin….

BB: Homer – t’day is th’ day they signed th’ Armistice.

MizP: You ‘member in school they tawked ‘bout th’ waw ta' end all waw’s?

Homer: Um… sorta.

BB:  Hit was th’ end of th’ waw in Urop… s’posed ta' be no mo waws…

MizP: But the ink was hardly dried ‘til they was secrutly buyin’ mo bullets.

BB: Jist ‘member… they signed th’ Armistice at the 11^th hour on th’ 11^th day on th’ 11^th month.

Homer: Oh… THAT armistice.

Jack: I remember Veterans selling little red “poppy” flowers.

BB: Tha-ut was ta' hep th wounded Vetruns of Worl Waw one …

MizP: Follered in jist 23 years by Worl Waw Two.  --

BB: Oh – won’t that a shame.

Jack: What we *really* want to do is to express our thanks for those who are willing to defend our nation.

MizP: Ah thank so too… but I kinda like th’ ole way… of honoring those who made the sacrifice back there in 1918 an befo.

Homer: Ah know -- Ahm a vetrun… but ah kinder like th’ histry of cawling hit Armistice Day… souns more peaceful.

BB: An fer gooness sake… peace is whut we needs.

MizP: But NOT at enny price. That-leads to sellin’ out ta' th enemy.

Jack: Well, you’re right Miz Pearl.  Perhaps as we go off today we can each take a moment to ourselves and thank the Lord for preserving our nation and the freedoms we enjoy.

WE'RE GONNA TAKE A DIFFERENT COURSE -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday 11-09-09

            Howdy – It’s Monday once again –

 

            And lots of things happened over the weekend.  For one thing the House worked something closer to a full week (amazing) with a late night session Saturday.  In case you hadn’t heard… the House vote did have *one* lone Republican from LA (Louisiana not Los Angeles) vote with  the Democrats to give them a ‘fig leaf’ of bi-partisanship… I think it made the GOP assistant minority leader, Eric Cantor, from Richmond grit his teeth… he turned his head and walked away when Rep. Cao (R-LA) – the Vietnamese gentleman, who defeated the Louisiana Rep. Jefferson (D-LA) who hid $90,000 in cold cash in his freezer and now stands to do time for it.

 

            Anyway… my teeth don’t need more damage … so partly because we’re having to take a necessary business trip to south Florida to handle estate business for my wife’s late brother Walter Emery, and partly just because we *all* need some relief from Madam Speaker’s opaque *xplanations* of what she *really* meant when she endorsed the President’s promise of 72 hours of ‘transparency’ before voting. (Translation… “keeping my fingers crossed) I’m just fed up with the mangled process.  Oh if we had Ben Franklin here to lecture these people.

 

            So – today’s program veers off in a non-political direction… and we hope to hold that tack for a few days.

                       

            Meantime … I hope you’re enjoying the run-up to Thanksgiving.  For me it’s a period so much less ‘pressurized’ than Christmas… I’m doing all in my power to keep it that way.  Having to figure out what to do about Med/Ins coverage for 2010 is going to be pressure enough – especially with the gang of clowns in DC posing as elected representatives.

 

            Oh well… I’m considering it our “Florida vacation…” just without the sunburn.

WE’RE GONNA TAKE A DIFFERENT COURSE

Just A Minute – I’ve been an unwilling witness to the Demo-dome on Capitol Hill – and am full up to here with “Madam Speaker” re-parsing her promises.

So while we’re off for a week or so on a necessary trip… we’re abandoning politics and I opened the Old Farmer’s Almanac for today and found it is famed Architect Sanford White’s 156^th birthday – and the birthday of Astronomer Carl Sagan born in 1934 – who died at age 62.

White was a famed architect and murdered hedonist; Segan was a Pulitzer-Prize winner, known best for his projections of a nuclear winter, which  would result if multiple nuclear explosions irrevocably damaged the world’s eco-systems.  Both, were famous in their day, but each demonstrated the truth of King Solomon’s phrase: “Vanity of vanities … all is vanity – chasing after the wind.”  -- followed by … “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments for this is the whole duty of man.”

You’ll find it illuminated in the Bible’s book of Ecclesiastes.

IT'S A LONG, LONG ROAD A-WINDING - Just A Minute Radio for Friday 11-06-09

            HELLO AGAIN – IT’S FRIDAY!

 

            It’s pretty hard to top this past week for packing in exciting, important stuff – both the WORLD SERIES and special elections that indicate a possible corrective course the American electorate is on the verge of making.

 

            Not too read too much into the Yankee win… Apparently the ability to throw many $$$ at the strike zone has a great bearing on success or failure… not total – but a strong trend.  

 

            On the other hand what the Obamacrats found out was the popularity of “the anointed one” – as Sean Hannity likes to characterize the President – doesn’t transfer readily to those whom he endorses. And to all appearances, Mrs. Pelosi – who enjoys a *very safe* House district in San Francisco – is not unwilling to send her troops to throw themselves over the health-care barricades and serve the egos of the Democrat leadership, without a care – at least that’s the way it seems to me.     

 

            Heretofore I’ve compared the mood of the country with that experienced in about the third year of the Carter Presidency  -- after the capture of the American embassy in Iran, the killer rabbit episode, the declaration of devotion to Red China instead of our old ally Nationalist China, and casting the American spirit as one of “Malaise” as he drew near the end of his first (and only) term – but I think I’ve misjudged the President.  Whereas it took Bre’r Jimmeh, nearly three years into his term in office to reach that kind of low point – it appears Mr. Obama has done the job in about nine and a half months!  Now that takes some kind of reckless policy mismanagement – that’s what I think.

 

            There’s little doubt Mr. Obama retains a lot of the personal charisma that carried him into office.  But realistically, he definitely did NOT come in on a landslide.  It *was* a definite defeat for the GOP who had, in a series of errors, lost their bearings… and many had forgotten (if they ever knew) the basic tenants of being Republicans.  [That’s happened before with the Rockefeller wing of the GOP – who aimed the ship at becoming Democrats Lite.]

 

            I’m not a particularly good political prognosticator being pre-disposed, I think, to -- find what I’m looking for – which is to say, I let my optimism run away with me sometime.  But I am encouraged by the events in Virginia (my home state) New Jersey and New York.  I

 

            The turn-around in that race was exciting and came a lot closer than the media gives credit for – plus the fact people in Congressional races really do want someone who lives in the District… knows the issues and doesn’t appear to be taking advantage of an opening.  That’s not intended to be critical of Mr. Hoffman… and the local Democrat machine in NY 23 put together a resuscitation effort particularly with the help of the GOP drop-out Miz DeDe Scozzafava. That District will be re-gerrymandered under the Dem. Dominated NY legislature and represented by Democrats in any case. That would have happened no matter who won.  So it was a good fight… we just didn’t win that’s all. It’s not a civil war within the GOP as the main stream media wants to portray it.

 

            Well… next week we’ll abandon politics altogether… be sure and be with us on Monday.

Just A Minute – “Change is what I wanted – and change is what I’m getting…” said a retired funeral director in middle New Jersey after Mr. Obama’s candidate took a drubbing in the Garden State.  Another said: "I'm tired of Corzine.  We have the highest property taxes in the United States…" – that from a former Obama supporter in Ocean County, delighted to put an end to Gov. Corzine’s one-term run as governor.

          The voters remembered vividly his promises to straighten out the state’s finances and since he was touted as a ‘financial wizard’ of Wall Street – but property taxes are $5,000 on a $350,000 house, and as the housing market tanked he raised the sales tax.

          Property taxes in Monmouth County have doubled in six years where margin was Christie, 62 percent, Corzine, 31 percent.

          "Change" was cited by 39 percent of voters to exit pollsters as #1 in New Jersey adding: "Change is good, know what I mean?"

          Those voters in New Jersey really latched on to Mr. Obama’s 2008 campaign slogan.

HIGH WATER MARK IN WATERTOWN -- Just A Minute Radio for Wednesday Nov. 04, 2009

            Hello on this Wednesday –

 

            It’s a lovely Fall day… and I’m impressed with the fact we’ve had no pre-winter freeze thus far… but I see the flower-beds and potted plants just awaiting ‘execution’ one of these mornings soon.

 

            The OFA (Old Farmer’s Almanac – for the newbies) comes through with some nice autumn tidbits – such as: Today is the day of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s first piano recital in the U.S. at Smith College in Northampton MA, in 1909.  No, I wasn’t around then.  But my mother was determined to have me learn piano.  I’m afraid I was equally – perhaps a little more than equally disinterested in practicing.  My piano career lasted a short year and a half.  I’ve had occasion to regret it ever since.              

 

            I believe we’ve had a significant political series of events in the last 24 hours.  I won’t bore you with my political outlook – but suffice it to say I’m encouraged to see Americans energized and taking a greater interest in “taking-back” the responsibility for their country.  I’ll let it go at that for now.  I’m sure those of you who have followed JUST A MINUTE for any significant length of time pretty well know where I come out.  I do so unashamedly – but I also don’t want to be “Johnny one note”…I’m more concerned with making sure we realize that “Our times are in His hands” – and knowing “… the King’s heart is in the hands of the Lord and like the watercourse, He turneth it whithersoever He wills.”

 

            That’s a great comfort and truth to rest in when things seem to get tangled and confused in this present world.  God bless you and keep you in HIS will today.

BB: Mr. Obama lost an by quite a bit.

Homer: Yeah… He wuz a-tryin’ awful hard ta' win in New Jersey --  

BB:   Jist almost perzackly a year ago both them states, Virginia and New Jersey, done voted fer the Obama caminpaing.

MizP: Big change huh?

Jack: I’d say so.

MizP: We dint vote fer nothin’ on th’ Caroliner Line.

Jack: No those two states want to have their state elections on the “off” years… NOT the same time as the President.

MizP: How kin they do tha-ut.

BB: See this here’s a Republic… an the States controls th’ thangs in their bailiwick…  

HOMER: An Ah like hit that-a-way.

MizP: But whut ‘bout Miz Skozzafovah up in New Yawk State … whut done happened to her?

BB: She was s’fer behind she pulled out on Saturday nite ... din’t want to finish third.

Homer: But then she turned around an endorsed th’ feller from th other party even after takin’ money from the Ree-publicans.

MizP: Tha-ut don’t seem rite.

BB: Oh hit’s hard ta' know whut a woman…   Oh…    Ah thank…

MizP: Ah thank you best not finish tha-ut sentence.

Jack: I think so too.

ONCE MORE INTO THE BREACH DEAR FRIENDS... - Nov. 02, 2009

Hello Again… It’s a nice Monday.

Which will be followed by a busy Tuesday as some states have important elections in what’s called the “off-year.”

New York has possibly the most interesting one in its upstate 23^rd Congressional District. The sitting Congressman Rep. McHugh, was picked by the Obama Administration to be Secy. of the Army – a sort of slightly sub-cabinet position that came about when the Defense Department came into existence and subordinated the Army, Navy and Air Force…

Anyway… ten GOP committee chairmen in the NY GOP are assigned by the party in such a situation to pick a candidate to run for that seat… but it’s not like a Primary election – which most States would use. Possibly some of you remember the Democrat party in SC picked the Senate candidate when Sen. Burnet Maybank died between the primary election and the general election back in the 50’s. Strom Thurmond thought that was not a good ‘democratic’ rule to follow…to let a committee pick what was tantamount to the Senator who would serve the next six years in office. Being unsuccessful in getting his own party people to re-consider and have an election. He did the next best thing – decided to run for the office as a write-in candidate.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, the other living Senator Olin D. Johnson, made the remark in the hearing of a Washington news reporter, that it wouldn’t make much difference anyway since not that many people in SC knew how to read and write. That didn’t go over so well when repeated in the Palmetto State…. So when election time came around… history was made and the first write in candidate to be elected to the Senate was Senator Thurmond – who, set a record (since broken by Sen. Byrd of W. Va) as the longest-serving Senator. The rest is in the history books.

Back to New York… Ms “Dede” Scozzafava, who has served as a mayor in that area and has an 85% GOP liberal voting record in the New York Legislature, was tapped to run by the committee chairmen mentioned above. The reaction was immediate… Several prominent Republicans thought it a bad move… and several nationally known ones backed Ms. Scozzafava, as the party run operation did.

I won’t rehash all that’s gone on – but Newt Gingrich and Michael Steele backed the Party’s position – while Sarah Palin, Dick Army, Tim Pawlenty (MN Gov.) and Fred Thompson thought it was a lousy “politics as usual” deal which Ms. Palin had fought against strenuously in Alaska. Tuesday night will tell how many agree with her and her band of friends.

Some think the Tea Party – party (TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY) is a dangerous thing; others think it’s time for the GOP to do some serious re-inventing. [full disclosure – I’m in the latter group myself]. But I suppose we’ll see Tuesday if the GOP will turn back to its roots…. Or follow the “modern” group.

ONCE MORE INTO THE BREACH, DEAR FRIENDS…

Just A Minute – They say of New York’s 23^rd District -- “the last non Republican elected there “was a “Whig.”

Thus, Dede Scozzafava, with an 85 percent liberal record in New York’s Legislature – got the nod from ten GOP party chairmen to hold the seat. She was immediately endorsed, pro-forma, by ex-House Speaker, Newt Gingrich, and RNC chairman, Michael Steele.

Well that kicked the can for the Tax-Payer’s tea-party people: It galvanized Minnesota’s Gov. Tim Pawlenty; Mike Huckabee; Fred Thompson; Dick Army; and former Gov. Sarah Palin -- all fed up with “politics as usual.”

Their outcry opposing Ms. Scozzafava, who is pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, and an unquestioned liberal – caused her Saturday night to release her backers and abandon without endorsing anyone what was headed for an embarrassing third-party finish.

So there’ll be a LOT of pontificating Tuesday night as the TV news people try to explain what the New York, New Jersey and Virginia hot-shot elections reveal. Possibly even a crumbling Presidency now, or in 2012.

JUST HOW GREEN CAN WE GET -- Just A MInute Radio for Friday 10-30-0

Howdy… it really *is* Friday… and the last one like this until next October…

 

And so the seasons change and the little poems in the Old FARMER’S ALMANAC tell us it’s just about time to switch the clocks back on Standard time. How many can remember when we used to call it Eastern War Time?  I’m not sure but I think they ran on EWT all through WWII with the idea that it was better for production… and we sure needed that.  But I wonder if it really did help … or did we just think so because we had to get up in pitch blackness?

 

Who remembers Eben Eugene Rexford? – He’s a poet who wrote: “A day for dreams / By leaf-strewn streams.”

Sounds nice and quiet doesn’t it… and rather like Autumn. He’s better known for writing “Silver Threads Among the Gold” – in 1970 inducted into the Song Writer’s Hall of Fame… wrote with Ira Sankey, Homer Rodehaver, Billy Sunday and others… Born in New York State, died in Green Bay Wisconsin of Typhoid fever October 18, 1916 – things you might never know if you didn’t stay up with JUST A MINUTE… (J)

 

            You know there’s probably somebody in your book of friends who today would appreciate a call, or a visit or perhaps just a card telling them you’re thinking of them – remembering them, and if it’s appropriate for your friendship (it usually is) to tell them you pray for them.  We wouldn’t be having the atmosphere filled with hot-air and hate, if there was more of that kind of relationship going on.

JUST HOW GREEN CAN WE GET

          Just a Minute – John Fund, an astute conservative political pundit, who writes for the Wall St. Journal, poses a question from a pair of New Zealand professors who title their controversial book: Time to Eat the Dog?  They won a UN Global 500 Award for environmental achievement.  The book says the carbon dogprint for the typical canine is equivalent to two SUV’s being driven 6000 miles a year – mainly because of all the energy which goes in to raising meat for dog food.  (Maybe they never read the dog food labels to see how much bran and cereal end up in the feeding bowl.)

          Anyway, these two Victoria University professors, Robert and Brenda Vale, say owning two hamsters is as bad for the planet as owning a plasma TV.  They argue pet owners should swap dogs and cats for chickens or rabbits – which could be eaten and compensate for the impact of other things on our environment."

          My take is: apparently, not all the kooks live in the northern hemisphere.

A DOG'S LIFE AT THE WHITE HOUSE - Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday 10-28-09

G’day everybody…

 

They said it was going to be pretty wet… is that how it turned out at your house?  Seemed that way around here.

One of the first forecasts that’s been right in a spell.

           

Seems like we get fairly sated with heavy news for a while and have to have something lighter… like the Presidential puppy having a birthday party in the rose garden. Well at least it’s interesting to hear something other than Nancy Pelosi or Senator Searchlight Harry giving the latest score on Health Care reform to the point where people say they don’t care any more… only come next tax season they’ll wish they’d paid more attention and spoken upittle more forcibly.

 

Well… we let them rush us into it… now comes the time for leisurely repentance – as we pitch our tents in the parks… and ride a moped because that’s all the gasoline we can afford.  It ain’t that bad yet… but it shore can become that bad – Those are the words I pick up floating across the fish dock at the Bait Shop and Sushi Bar.

 

Homer’s worried the White House may cut off popular netsites or weblogs in order to reduce broadband use so emergency nets can carry traffic. I’m afraid I can foresee it coming to the time ham radio operators may have to set up their own networks in order to maintain communications. And if the government gets real sticky about it – things border on the cusp of pirate or illegal (read that as unregulated) operations. Certainly those are not pleasant things to contemplate.  In most papers you read an occasional story of the spike in gun and ammunition sales all across the U.S.  Will they become the next site for ‘official shortages’ and restricted supplies?

MizP: Jist a Minit – Did you see the birthday party the Obama’s had at the White House, Mr. Jack?

Jack: No – I didn’t know any of the family had a birthday.

HOMER: Yeah… hit wuz th’ Dawg… The dog named “BO.”

BB:  Yeah… hit’s a Portugese Water Spaniel … Never heered of one.

Jack: Well what’s the scoop?

MizP: They had parhty hats.

HOMER: An Bo had a cake made out’n veal stuff.

BB: Veal stuffin?  I never heered of that either…

MizP: An they’s a-havin’ this parhty while th’ Congers cain’t git hitsef to’gether ta' vote on stuff.

Homer: Well.. ah don’t thank that has ennythin’ ta' do wif hit Miz Pearl.

MizP: Well suppose you coun’t pay your phone bill, er lite bill er buy gas… wud you be givin’ a …

Jack: Excuse me Miz Pearl… but you know those girls… they love that little dog and a party…

HOMER: Yeah… hit’s sumpin’ they wanted ta' do.

MizP: Well … maybe they ourt ta' invite Mr. Frank, er Mr. Shahapton… they’s allus lookin’ unhappy.

Jack: Whoa… maybe we’d better change the subject.

Homer: OK… I did wanna ask ifn’ you’s upset about Miz Scozzafava runnin’ last up in New Yawk State?

BB: Oh my Homer, you is th’ bearer of bad news ain’t you?

Homer: OK… I jist thought Mr. Gingerich din’t make th’ smartest news when he endorsed her

BB: Yeah… even when she votes mosly Demicrat… but she *is* agains* gun control –

Jack: So what does that mean?

BB: Well… mos of these librals they kinder stumble over the huntin’ rifles.. people don’t like you messin wif ‘em.

MizP: At’s rite… I’se seen quite a few mess up thangs when they start a foolin’ wif people’s guns.

BB: Yeah so is free speech… but these lefties is a-tawkin’ ‘bout cuttin’ off people’s use of th’ Internet.

HOMER: Yeah .. they’s a sayin’ hit mite be needed fer Emergency service…

BB; Well… Ah thank tha-ut mite fly as well as telling Newpapers they cunt publish cause we gotta save trees.
