Finally! After about a two week hiatus and messin’ around with the programs: I’m back in the electronic saddle again. 

 

Sorry for the air holes in getting back to you. Perhaps you don’t know how frustrating computers can be – but ‘tis so.  It’s not JUST the computers – it’s *some* of the people who try to run them. They are not +all+ equally trained or experienced.  So here I am feeling like a second grade in elementary school being dumped into the ranks of graduating seniors.

 

Really – I’ve seldom experienced such problems, or people who said they would “without fail” do something specific [who may have tried but failed – but I never knew about it] thus leaving me high and dry and computer stupid.  I bought my first computer in about 1968 [paid about $13,000 for 68K of RAK – you’d think I”d be smarter and able to work the things.  Not so!  I think my electronic devices education QUIT when the vacuum tube was replaced by transistors – and it’s been downhill for me (and frustrating) ever since. Now that I’ve passed age 80 – I’m beginning to wonder if I’ll EVER catch up.

 

Can anyone share with me their experience with voice-recognition replacing typing?

 

I’ve done a lot of radio and electronics substitution and working with audio/radio equipment – but apparently I’m falling farther and farther behind. Any suggestions for an old geezer?

 

Here’s some homely wisdom [I think]:

 

Those who do not read – are no better off than those who cannot… or don’t!

A true friend laughs at your jokes, even when they’re not funny.

And sympathizes with your troubles even when they’re not so bad.

I learned that from the weekend Wall St. Journal.        “Spirit” airlines holds the championship “pinch–penny” rank among domestic airlines, charging for everything but breathing their air.  But overall they’re cheaper. Also their stock has gone up. .

          Here are profits ‘per-plane’ last year as published in the “Journal” which ranged from Spirit Airlines $2.06 million to American which Lost $2.32 million in 2011.

          On fares Chicago to New York Spirit charged $79: American $ 125; Southwest $115 –

          For the first checked bag Spirit charged $28-38; American $25; Southwest – free.

          For overhead bin Spirit charged $30-45: For water or soda: Spirit $3 American and Southwest – free: For peanuts: Spirit charges $4; American $5 – bag size varies.             So to discover these things check for one way fares, boarding pass fees, discounts at inconvenient times, size of the peanut bags and flight on-time averages. Often bargains come at a price.

OOPS! WE READ THE DATA WRONG -- Just a Minute Radio for Thursday120510

Some days are exciting – some satisfying!  I was satisfied to see I had not misjudged our neighboring state – and they came through with flying colors for the straight and narrow! Hoo-Ray!!!

 

Of course the battle is not over by along shot – we have but to continue on our way – trusting the Lord because it’s HIS victory we’re seeking, not our own.

 

And I’m more and more confident no matter how difficult the path seems – or what obstacles are put in the way… we shall overcome! 

 

Eventually the battle will be won and the victory ours.  Now those of you who are Bible readers… or believers.. know what I’m writing about.  If you want an example.. well try looking in the Old Testament and read the book of Jonah. It’s not very long – can be consumed (maybe consummated is a better word) in less than 20 minutes or so. At the end it sort of leaves you hanging… But you can flip over to the end of the New Testament and read the last three chapters or so of that… and you will see what I mean.

 

Oft times we leave the theater before the curtain goes down… or at least until it reaches the stage floor and the staff and actors all come and take their bows… not for themselves, but for their King who is the designer and ultimate director of the entertainment.  The biggest victory of all is when you can look behind the curtain and get a real glance at what’s going on back there… or up there.

 

The theater is ‘make believe’ – but the Bible *isn’t*… it’s real(er) than real. We have the record… and it’s true and … well I could go on and on… but the dinner bell (actually for you southerners like me it’s the supper bell) is ringing .. time to come in from the fields and enjoy the dinner (or supper –whatever you prefer.).

 

Nice to be with you .. let’s look forward to tomorrow together!

OOPS – WE READ THE DATA WRONG

            Just a Minute: North Carolina’s presently has a 16-year-old law banning same-sex marriage. President Obama, I think, miscalculated picking Charlotte for the Democrats’ nominating convention because he narrowly won it in 2008.

          Two other states will now vote on gay marriage in November, Minnesota with a constitutional amendment and Maine with a referendum. Voters in Maryland and Washington state may be asked to allow new same-sex marriage laws, otherwise New York approved it most recently.

            There were 14 full page newspaper ads favoring the amendment placed in North Carolina. The prediction was the affirmation would win by a 55% margin but approval actually achieved 61.8 percent.  

          The AP quotes Tami Fitzgerald, of the Vote for Marriage chair, thanking churches, political groups and others, for sending an unmistakable message to “protect marriage in our State and Nation.” The North Carolina GOP State Senate leader had previously said there’s some miscalculation by the Democrats in thinking “North Carolina was a place where they have a chance.”  So while the issue may be up in the air politically – North Carolina is straightforward Biblically.

NC VOTES ON AMENDMENT + CHINESE ACTIVIST -- Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday 120509

What do they call it – Murphy’s Law – “If anything *can* go wrong it *will* go wrong – and at the worst possible moment!

 

How many times do I *think* I’m experiencing it again.  It’s like a BBC program that’s written a little joke into the lines of one of their main characters in a series – It’s called “Lark Rise at Candleford” (I think – my sieve-se-ford memory again.)  The writer(s) on this series has the main lead character excuse herself from banality by saying: “That’s’ my one weakness.” Except every time she says it – it’s a different ‘weakness.’ Very cute – always gets a laugh -- from us at least.

 

Another striking difference between British and American actors that I’ve picked up (at least I think I have) as a former actor – I know I have a terrible time remembering lines --  British theater etiquette (I guess) *requires* all actors to know their lines at the first rehearsal.  Wow… in trying to memorize stage production lines I’m terrible. I am given to hiding little notes to myself in the wings on if we’re doing a film .. on the set somewhere – so I can sneak a peek at them between takes and refresh my sieve-se-ford model memory.  That’s one reason I love radio so much. You *always* (in radio drama anyway) have a script in hand and don’t have to worry about memory blank spots. It must have formed a permanent weakness in my brain because throughout my whole experience of radio etc. I’ve depended upon scripts… Teleprompters are *wonderful* in my book. I’m envious of the soap opera characters who have to – and can – memorize great gobs of dialogue and perform it on cue. Ah well… thank the Lord for writers – and scripts!

 

We are trying to repair or reconstruct or whatever my writing/editing bench where I work on scripts and stuff. It’s fun when it goes well… and terrible when it doesn’t. This week has been an *it doesn’t* do right. So I have to stop and try to fix it. In the student days…. I’d just xxx it out and go on… and punctuation?  Do it to communicate… don’t worry about the reading. Oh well… we all take short cuts.

 

Gotta quit – rambling here takes (make that “robs”) lots of time to go back and make the stuff readable… still at my age…I’m not sure I have that much time. (L)

MISCALCULATION RIDES ON THE WIND - Just A Minute Radio -- 120508

Some days – as I said yesterday – then there are other days… and sometime I’ll hit the mother lode… but that’s a long way off!

 

Right now it’s important to know The Lord IS in charge. And there’s nothing like a BAD day. “Every day is a new day – every day is the soul set free – to enjoy the Lord from beginning to ending and that’s the song that keeps me free.

 

I really can’t figure where those lines come from. It’s like the lost chord on the organ song… hard to find again… but always enjoyable and always gives one an uplift when thought upon thoroughly.  Even when the storm clouds are blackest – and the lightning the brightest and most powerful – still it is worth contemplating it’s the Lord’s creation. He made it all – and it all comes from and through HIM. What a blessing to be in HIS throne room and partaking of HIS presence.

 

Really – that’s what “Communion” is all about. I used to wonder about such a big word when I was such a little boy – and could hardly fathom what was going on. But as I recall… I knew it was good and so it is today.

 

Unfortunately people forget or lose track of the fact the Lord God is the creator and sustainer of the Universe. What do we have to fear – Here is a magnificent thought from Ps. 8:

 

”When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained, What is man that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor.

 

Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou has put all things under his feet: The fowl of the airs, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas, O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!”

 

There are no words more beautiful for the earth made by God. How we need to PRAISE HIM!

MISCALCULATION RIDES ON THE WIND

          Just a Minute: We’ll come back to our China news concerning activist Chen Guangcheng, who is blind and trying to find freedom in China. But today in our neighboring state of North Carolina a huge question faces voters – many of whom live within our radio signal’s range.

          Vice President Joe Biden declares himself totally “comfortable” with legalizing same-sex marriage even though it is presently proscribed in North Carolina law. In a rare public newspaper statement, elderly evangelist and North Carolina native, Billy Graham, has called for passage of the proposed amendment and even a Democrat leaning poll says it seems likely to fail by a margin of 55 to 41 percent. Mr. Obama maintains stoic silence though the State narrowly voted for him in 2008.

            The national Democrat Convention will be held in the “Old North State,” but the current governor, Bev Perdue, decided not to run. The Republican State Senate leader says there’s beginning to be some miscalculation by the Democrats in thinking “North Carolina was a place where they have a chance.”

CHINESE PUZZLE AT STATE DEPARTMENT -- Just A Minute Radio for Monday 120507

Here we are on a Monday again. Awfully dry here in SC. But we reckon the Lord knows how much moisture we really need. (J)

 

This Chinese Puzzle that has occupied the news calendar for last week and I’m sure you’ve heard about it over the weekend too.  Well… we have a little Chinese background and it’s a bit of a bother when we see other ‘causes’ (like maintaining Chinese aloofness on the mainland) scrabbling at the edges of politeness and in general just mucking things up.  Now they’ve decided to mess up the election process or gripe about it a lot.

 

I really am not a Chinese expert and it’s the government with whom I’m bone picking – and not even all of that.

 

Here in South Carolina we graduated some 35 or 40 students from a nursing preparation school on the upper (ie. 4 year college level) and I’m not seeking to stir up trouble. BUT we have very good relations with some educators in one of the major cities on the mainland (maybe more than one for all I know) but the exchange of nursing instructors and medical staff I suppose, has gone a long way toward improving things on both sides of the Pacific.

 

I say a long way because there was hardly any progress in that direction up to say ten years ago.  Now there are Chinese students being trained by Americans in China and Chinese students being trained by Americans in America – and we don’t need nobody messing around with the mix (especially from the Mainland) to muddy up the waters.

 

Now come people who are attempting to inject politics into the picture. Bug out! Your ‘help’ (make that read interference) is neither wanted or needed. People are getting improvement in training and in medicine and in getting along with one another between major nations. And no help needed either from the Chinese Govt. or the U.S. Govt. other than just to stay out of the way. This is a win – win situation in which both sides profit from governments on sides just removing interference from the scene. The doctors and nurses themselves are the authorities on what is good and effective medicine and injecting more government into the process merely clouds it up and slows it down.

 

So… read it as good news folks.  I’m not identifying anyone anyplace because everything is going smoothly – and government only clouds things.

 

I say just pray for the effort because good is happening – not political good just *good* -- so leave it alone and let the training benefit both sides – there’s no downside to it.

 

Well… ‘nuff said through my small megaphone. It will go unnoticed anyway, except for those who wish to do it harm. Just pray for the Lord’s will to be realized and for the long arm of government to just be ignored.

CHINESE PUZZLE AT STATE DEPARTMENT

          Just a Minute: THE HILL newspaper correspondent, Meghashyam Mali, cites Obama strategist, David Axelrod, for hammering Mitt Romney trying to help protect Chinese dissident, Chen Guangcheng, from government intimidation. He attempted to reunite his family last week to protect his wife and children. Axelrod criticized Romney for interfering and seeking help for the blind activist in getting his family untangled from Chinese oppression.

                     

                    Chen, a blind human rights activist who is essentially under house arrest now in hospital, first sought refuge in the U.S. embassy; but a deal to allow Chen to live with his family and receive regular contact with U.S. diplomats unraveled last week when Chen’s family was threatened by Chinese officials. He’d now rather leave the country.

          This fosters a delicate dance for the diplomats on both sides. The U.S. doesn’t want to dampen growing commercial interests between the U.S. and China; and Chinese officials want to wave off natives who won’t toe government regulations and so give others ideas about freedom differences between China and America.

          Main-stream media want to drop this hot potato. ---  We’ll have more to say about it tomorrow.

EVER BODY GOTTA THINK THEY KNOW

          Just a Minute: Michael Barone, sorting through the pages of The Washington Examiner, and Neil Munro of The Daily Caller have been trying to step back from nightly stargazing to find the “meaning behind the meaning” of what’s happening?

          One thing they counted was the 130 appearances by the President or his family, friends and staffers before this last flurry of overseas campaigning. It shows the White House strategists worry he cannot replicate the 66 % to 32% margin he had among young voters back in 2008. In fact another Gallup poll shows only 56% of voters under 30 say they definitely will vote.

          If you look at the other side of the coin, among older Americans it’s 80 % who plan to vote while interest among young people is down to about 45 % or less.

          Frankly all the “bits and pieces” of voting ideas among the youngsters and older voters is just confusing, unless you assign Scott Rasmussen to watch the ballot box. His surveys are always among likely voters. Conventional wisdom generally says the older folks are more serious about going to the polls than the noisy beaters of pots and pans.

NATIONAL PRAYER DAY IS MAY 3RD -- Just a Minute Radio for Wednesday 120502

This has been one of the most brain wracking days (evening) of my life.

 

Today I’ve wrestled in the ‘wee’ hours of the morning when my usual problematic typing begins to give me trouble anyway – and then comes a complication because of a program mal- function or some distraction and the normal evening journalistic effort begins to stretch toward the 2-3-4-AM hours to get a problem worked out.  (I started to write the word ‘solved’ but I never seem to get them ‘solved… just ‘postponed’ until another unsatisfactory problem solving positions itself across my pathway.

 

Well.. enough about bellyaching. It doesn’t do anyone any good. Fortunately there are no ‘other’ ones around to witness my exasperating moments.

 

What’s the problem – you ask?  Well… I was a radio major at BJU which meant writing and duplicating radio scripts.  Now radio writers don’t care much for punctuation or spelling… and in this day of computers – well it’s a dream – (Yeah – a nightmare!) as the spell checker automatically corrects misspellings and calls your attention to gross grammatical errors. EXCEPT for the problem that I never learned how to type in the first place. It was better than hunt-and-peck but it was my own ‘touch’ system which made for atrocious spelling so tangled up the ‘corrector’ in it’s little two cell electronic brain couldn’t figure out what I was trying to convey. 

 

Well at two in the morning – mistake after mistake gets VERY frustrating causing fist banging on the desk and other teeth grinding episodes. I just took a glance at the clock… it says 1:22 AM – and it took so long for me to type that that the digital clock on the computer screen decided it could wait no longer and added a minute for good measure….ARRRghhh. Quit trying to HELP me…making it worse. (J) but the gremlins are cheerful hosts – they keep telling me.

 

Anyway, I’m done for the day…. Just one more posting and I’m off to the pillow and bed clothes…. I hope you’ve had a good day so far… and that others will follow. I’m certain… they will… IF --- and I say this with all four fingers (excluding the thumb) pointed at ME as the culprit. Why didn’t I learn how to type AND play the piano when I was 12 … what an opportunity wasted.

 

Hey… have a good day or whatever time you read this (you must have read it or you wouldn’t have gotten this far.) Praise the Lord for HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOREVER. There – I typed it without an error.  See I can do it if I put my mind and fingers to the task. I love you all…

MORE HONORED IN THE BREACH -- Just A Minute Radio for Thursday 120503

Good Morning Breakfast Clubbers! – That used to be Philco’s call to breakfast. Apparently it sold a lot of radios.

 

Nowadays hardly anyone remembers the “Breakfast Club with Don McNiel” – which originated in Chicago with many listeners and I think it was put on the air out there because having a coast to coast network – by the old “BLUE” network as I recall, was probably more economical and worked – because in those days telephone signals done along copper wires had to be ‘boosted’ and re-worked with equalizers to sound pretty good.

 

Well, it’s all over now. Chicago according to the poet in Chicago who wrote “The Fog Comes In On Cat’s Feet” – remember who?  Carl Sandburg, who called Chicago the butcher of the world because so many ‘packing houses’ were packed into the stock yards areas….  I never saw any of it… just pictures. Carl Sandburg’s last home was up in the Blue Ridge town of Flat Rock…maybe East Flat Rock… I’m not sure. Anyway – you can visit there… his typewriter in his studio is still a place tourists visit.

 

I better get on with business.

 

Is Spring and joyousness coming to your house? – or has this super mild winter just whetted your appetite for Florida?  Lots of cities I see by the news reports – have a lot of left over salt and sand which they usually use in the winter for deicing bridges and roads. My guess is – because I’m rather suspicious of the “Global Warming” science crowd – is we’ll have our share again before too many years go by – but we’ll see.

 

Anyway… it has been a flowery Spring not just in Charleston by the sea – but also up this way. I’m always kinda sad to see the Azaleas go sad so quickly – but there are new breeds (right words?) of flowers – and some that bloomed only once a year now put forth two and three times they say.  My wife thinks she’s ready to see a couple of purchases do that this year. But we’re not ahead of the game nor spreading the mulch yet.

 

BUT WE DID have the garage & yard sale last Saturday from which my wife says she’s not sure she’ll recover.  But I think she will;…I kid her saying “She’s a ‘tough old bird.’ And she is a real trooper.

 

Well… be with us tomorrow if you can we’ll enjoy having you around the home place.

 

Oh we had a change of electronic equipment in the middle of the week… caused a bit of a glitch with the Bait shop and Sushi Bar crowd… but things will settle back in… we think. ((J)’

“JUST A MINUTE”

MORE HONORED IN THE BREACH 

          Just a Minute: Today is appointed as a national day of prayer for the United States. Unfortunately, as Shakespeare said: “Tis more honored in the breach than in the observance.” 

          President Obama took his victory lap yesterday. I’m sure there’s a minority of are clergy who issue a call to prayer for our nation; but I doubt it is highly observed. President Carter was unnaturally famous for his use of this word mostly thought of as “A general sense of depression or unease.” I don’t have a certified ‘malaise’ meter either – but I’m not impressed as we come out of winter into Spring that we are registering a very high number.

          What is evident, even with the ersatz puffing by the Administration is not all dread – but it’s not all joy either. Too many people out of work too long. Too many houses in foreclosure. Gas prices that go up like a rocket and come down like a feather. It’s not a fourth of July spirit that’s pressing forward. Maybe we can do better talking about it more tomorrow. <I’m Jack Buttram.> (END)
