VOICE ONLY -- CARTOON -- GUESS WHO'S TALKING

Here we are in a winter that just won’t quit being Spring.  But there’s not much to do about it except rejoice in lower heating bills. (J)

We’re also having an interesting time with the JAM program  -- guessing who might be the cartoon character who appeared this week in INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY explaining why and how he needed to be raising a Billion dollar campaign fund for himself,  on the public record denouncing the ‘too much money’ theme. He pronounced a similar anathema in 2008 and was thereby permitted under the rules in place to raise an unlimited amount of money since he didn’t take government funds… and rather vastly outspent his opponent Sen. John McCain.

So… we’re looking at this campaign “slog” – a term which I began to use in the Boy Scouts describing a long, muddy march up a hill or down a slick trail in the rain when pretty much everything you had got wet and clammy in anticipation of building your own shelter and sleeping out under the dripping trees all night, or sliding back down “Old Raggety” mountain after a dismal night trying to keep warm and dry.

Do you get the picture?  That’s why I’d sure like for the United States seek to shorten its Presidential campaigns to something like the U.K. does… only one month allowed for formal campaigning before the election is conducted. Strict limits on the amounts to be spent on campaign advertising and other constraints – and after all that crank up the machine and see if it’s still running OK.

But I suppose that coat from across the sea would fit us no better than having to commission another Buckingham Palace. I just am getting *very tired* of starting up a new campaign just when the old one has not even washed the laundry for the Lincoln bedroom.

Too bad… my cranky curmudgeon spirit is stirring again… and I need to quiet it down. (J)

The hour is late and the week has yet another program to be built so I’ll see you tomorrow. DV.

VOICE ONLY -- CARTOON – GUESS WHO’S TALKING

Just a Minute: Today here’s a fun 60 second test – Guess who’s talking -- take notes if needed:

(Quote) “By allowing freedom of speech in campaigns The Supreme Court has reversed a century of law. Which is why I took the unprecedented step of chastising the Supreme Court in my 2010 State of the Union Speech. American elections should not be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, which is why I’m raising a billion dollars for my Presidential campaign.

“Super-pacs are evil. And against everything I stand for and everything I believe in. I oppose them on principle.

“If you agree with me send your unlimited contributions to:

That’s the quote. The cartoonist is Michael Ramirez. It appeared in INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY. If you know who said it – send your name to: n4zhk@arrl.net  -- I’ll read your name on the air tomorrow at 11:30 and 5:15.

STILL THE JOURNEY LIES BEFORE US -- Jam Elements for Wednesday 120208

Wretched Gremlins stole my script today and I like to never have found my copy.  These birds need to be fired!

But no sense in getting upbraided at things that happen. I was looking over a list of the attempts at ‘malware’ made by people scattered over the ‘plugged in’ parts of the globe. It’s enormous and apparently a huge industry. I don’t see who pays for it…. I know it costs money and time but who benefits?  I’m guessing it’s one faction preying on another. Eventually that would seem to get tiring!

But if you’re bent on doing evil and destroying other people’s time and perseverance – I suppose it comes naturally. I just hope the officials in the foreign countries where a huge amount of this being a ‘dog in the manger’ kind of obstacle is mounted. It’s not like robbing banks – although I’m sure money is swiped from legitimate (and probably illegitimate sources) but it’s bound to get old – and the challenge to those trying to stamp out the wrong doers is probably just as strong or stronger than the malefactors.

Well – all things will come right. If you would like some reading on that check out the last five chapter of the last book in the Bible – the book of “The Revelation” which deals with the ‘last days’ of the earth and presumably at least a part of the Universe… it’s fascinating, worth reading and even though it takes some study – it’s already proven it’s self to be fascinating reading and to all of our understanding (which is NOT complete) true.

I’m not well enough educated in the times of the end – but it’s possible even for a lesser informed person as I am – to glean the good news from the Bible and use it for my own understanding of what’s going on as well as for the good of my family and acquaintances.

So… Enough for tonight. Pull down that Holy Book… the Bible.  There are LOTS of instructive writings about it and those who wrote it under God’s guidance. If you’ll give it a little time and effort you’ll find yourself greatly rewarded. – and I’m not trying to sell you ANYTHING!

God bless you and yours as this day draws one day closer to the end.

Cordially, IN HIM

IS THIS MEETING REALLY NECCESSARY? -- for Just A Minute Radio on Tuesday 120207

OK… a little break from the wars and we’re back on the battlefield.

Mr. Newt seems to be a bit contradictory – but I chalk it up to difficult circumstances. He missed getting on the ballot in Virginia – and ought to have known better. And I think the same thing prevails in Missouri – but also they have additional problems.  And in addition Gov. Perry was apparently caught off guard on the Virginia question of getting on the ballot. I’d guess this is going to stimulate a clean-up of getting on the ballot in some states. But… it’s in the State’s prerogative to control who may vote in their contests… and states are getting more and more irritated at the Feds and the renegades messing around with “their” territory…. “It’s OUR state and we control and play by  the rules. You have to too!”

Goes back to the ‘good old days’ of I don’t want to play in your yard either!

This has been a really moshed up mess with all these campaigns and messed up voting stuff and all.  We need a coalition of AG’s (Attorney’s General) from the States to lead the way here… not just sit back an chortle. And those who want to run for office need to do diligent research and make sure they meet the requirements while they quit bellyaching and complaining about the rules.  The rules is the rules… and “Don’t tell *ME* what to do! It’s MY state!”  That’s the attitude and unless you want a ball of yarn kind of puzzle to clear up you’d better pay attention to it. We have little enough control over our own playgrounds… so don’t come messin’ ‘round.

I’m just passing along a little red-neck irritation. It’s left over from oh say 1860 or so. (J)…

I really wish we’d get on the stick about cutting down the LENGTH of the Presidential campaigning etc. etc. We’re going to have to insist on setting some standards here that are compatible with good government. It doesn’t make sense to keep pushing the start of the campaigns back and back… First thing you know there will be people standing on the capitol steps on inauguration day declaring their candidacy for the Presidency 4 years hence… (IN fact it may already have happened. Who kept track of how much the Senator from Illinois who ran for the Presidency in 2008 and before – was actually running for being Prez when he should have been paying attention to the job he had in the Senate for Ill?

Well… that’s one for another day.  Let’s everybody take a deep breath. We’ve got a LONG HIKE ahead of us until November 6!  Please pay attention!

“JUST A MINUTE”

IS THIS MEETING REALLY NECESSARY?

Just a Minute: If you’re looking for a strategy meeting which ought to have been scrapped – check this one at the Las Vegas’ Palazzo Hotel held Saturday evening in a nearly empty ballroom. The Washington Post described the campaign as (quote) lackluster.”

The meeting was apparently called by the Gingrich organization to answer a question looming over their campaign. Should he withdraw? His answer was – according to the “Post” -- an “emphatic NO”. Gingrich confirmed it in a meeting with reporters Saturday night after Nevada returns showed him losing to Romney by 20 points down.

This stood in stark contrast to Mr. Gingrich’s self-proclaimed confidence he could go on to win. His viewpoint: (quote) “A vast majority of Republicans across the country are going to want an alternative to a Massachusetts moderate…”

Except for South Carolina the Gingrich crew struggles to raise money; –.the Post story also says the campaign sometimes comes across as (quote)disorganized and unprofessional.”

Last week in Nevada a spat between state and national operatives de-railed a meeting between Gingrich and Nevada’s Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval.

STARTLING PREDICTION IN NEW YORK TIMES -- For Just A Minute Radio on Monday 120206

Often it seems ‘huge’ stories come blasting across the news wires at unpredictable times.

In this case most weekend papers have to put their Sunday tabloids ‘to bed’ earlier in the week than on the Saturday or Sunday. So Thursday this story began to cross the wires and leak out into the general news reading population.

It’s the news of impending war.

No one has been able to this point to dissuade Iran from proceeding with its development of nuclear weapons. It’s made all its neighbors jittery – and word in our newsroom is most of Arab league nations are anxious to have Iran drop its plans for nuclear weapons.

Israel is the most threatened of course because of the heated rhetoric unleashed by the their religious leaders – who often do not seem to be able to tell one end of a gun from the other – or the have been so stirred up emotionally it’s like stopping a two mile coal train coming down the grade from West Virginia… it takes time, energy and understanding. It’s not hard to see why neighboring nations who do NOT have their fingers on the red buttons are jittery. The Iranian spokes people seem to revel in making the most bluster they can (often on Friday afternoons) and everyone near and far fears they will act irresponsibly – or cut loose ‘the dogs of war.’

So that’s why the alarm bells are going off across Europe and even in this country. One never knows just when an overenthusiastic, stirred up official might touch off a powder keg in the Middle East.  It’s also the kind of threat the United Nations are supposed to damp down and create ways for the ‘rogue’ nations to ‘save face.’ But since much of this negotiating goes on behind closed doors and without knowing just who is proposing what, so we just have to wait (AND PRAY.)

That last piece of advice is the most important of all… once more we come to a brink where the Lord is in control – and we must leave the progression or non-progression in HIS hands. Once more I suggest you re-read the account of the Old Testament prophet Daniel, speaking the truth in power to the King who was also his prison-maker.  Our need is to commit ALL these troubling events to the Lord who alone is able to calm the state of affairs… or to call it to an end as foretold in the Biblical scriptures.

We’ll be looking forward to meeting you whenever the Lord makes HIS will known.  That will be GLORY – and vindicate in victory all that has gone before.

Cordially, IN HIM

“JUST A MINUTE”

STARTLING PREDICTION BY THE NEW YORK TIMES

Just a Minute: Over the weekend the New York Times magazine made a startling prediction -- Israel will attack Iran in 2012. Because I’ve often suggested prayer to our audience – which includes a lot of born-again, Bible believing Christians who may not have access to this story – I decided to call it to your attention.

Joel C. Rosenberg, a Jewish newsman and Christian pastor who has written for WORLD magazine originating in Asheville, is a source for this same information and I wanted to pass it along. Here is part of his posting:

The New York Times magazine on Sunday published a critically important story by Israeli journalist Ronen Bergman, one of the most respected Israeli journalists following the Iran story over several decades. It is headlined: “Will Israel Attack Iran?"  -- Bergman's conclusion: "After speaking with many senior Israeli leaders and chiefs of the military and the intelligence, I have come to believe that Israel will indeed strike Iran in 2012."

This goes beyond simple quoting another source; I thought it extraordinary enough you might want to pray over it.

THE LULL IS NOT FOR SLEEPING -- BUT CALMING -- Just A Minute Radio for Friday 120203

Sometimes – typing after midnight … things get left out or obscured or mysteriously twisted…

None of that is happening today on this watch.  We just think it makes good sense to pause and reflect on what’s going on.

This is a little bit of Q&A time… although it isn’t.  We don’t ask you the questions – we give you some of the answers that I have come across and which seem abstract as well as concrete enough to be a source of being brought back to earth.  The dreamy violins and other sleepy time music sort of carry us away sometime… but this is different.

From time to time we think that our brainy crew who come to cheer us on when the grass gets deep and the waters run high – well they need a break. So this is just a one minute break from the strain of the day to getting some easy answers you might find come in handy from time to time.

So… with best wishes for a quiet and calm moment or two we drop upon you softly some observations that have come our way and bode well to calm one down if we don’t get pretzel fever to answer the questions. All you have to do here is listen and find yourself far more absorbed and informed on the matter of too much shooting going on in this world. You’ll see what I mean if you just hang around for the next minute or so. We’ll supply the answers and give you something simple and restful to think on.

THE LULL IS NOT FOR SLEEPING – BUT CALMING

Just a Minute: Now’s a good time to take a deep breath and lean back. The world will keep on turning even without you pedaling as hard as you can. Now it’s time to move on just taking a minute to slow down and improve your temperament. For instance:

I’m learning the great challenge in life is to decide what’s important and quit paying attention to everything else. – Age 51

Getting fired can be the best thing that can happen to you. – Age 42

Just when I’m getting my room the way I like it, Mom says to clean it up. Age – 13

I found out there’s almost no quality product that sells on the cheap. – Age 52

Don’t compare yourself to the best others can do – work on the best you can do. –age 68

You should never be too busy to say “please” or “thank you.” – Age 36

Finally – you can’t be a hero unless you take chances. – Age 43

Now those ought to hold you over the weekend. I’ll see you Monday. <> I’m Jack Buttram.       (END)

I'M AFRAID THE REALLY HARD PART IS STILL AHEAD -- Just a Minute Radio for Thursday 120202

It’s the day for Mr. Groundhog to either see his shadow or not.

I wonder what the people up in Puxatawny Pennsylvania will do if the groundhog just doesn’t show up?

The celebration early this morning was to be held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  It’s February 2 in the United States and Canada. According to folklore. If it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day then spring will come early. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat into its burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks – which in our case this year means more 60 and 70 degree days.  Whatever happened to winter?

New to me is the fact that in southeastern Pennsylvania, Groundhog Lodges (Grundsow Lodges) celebrate the holiday with fersommlinge, social events in which food is served, speeches are made, and one or more g'spiel (plays or skits) are performed for entertainment. The Pennsylvania German dialect is the only language spoken at the event, and those who speak English pay a penalty, usually in the form of a nickel, dime or quarter, per word spoken, put into a bowl in the center of the table.

(All of the foregoing information came from the current edition of the Wikipedia Encyclopedia – thank you very much.)

My wife Barbara M. Emery was born and raised in southeastern PA…. but she does not speak Pennsylvania Dutch. Nonetheless a Pennsylvania girl married a young Virginia gentleman in May of 1953 and lived happily ever after. (J)

Have a great day… See you tomorrow.

“JUST A MINUTE”

I’M AFRAID THE REALLY HARD PART IS STILL AHEAD

Just a Minute: Tuesday was an “up” day for the Romney Campaign but and by Wednesday the storm flags were flying.

Mr. Romney beat Mr. Gingrich by a large vote.  When the main stream media begin to dig under the surface – another story emerges. They point out among the most conservative voters in the exit polling, Romney loses and Gingrich wins – but it’s true also while winter reigns in the northern hemisphere, summer is at its peak in Brazil. There’s probably a thousand interpretations of what has happened – and twice that many pushed forward over what MAY happen.

          What’s the *real* truth?

The predominance of the news and opinion columns I read in the Washington POST, no friend of Mr. Romney, awarded a real victory to him. The Wall St. Journal – editorials are far more conservative -- had mostly even division between who has the better prospects – admitting Romney has the most resources.

Mr. Romney had a bad day coming out of South Carolina and a good one coming out of Florida. But the election is really in November. Relax -- have another swig of iced tea. <> I’m Jack Buttram.  (END)

WE STILL GOTTA LONG WAY TA SKI! -- for Just A Minute Radio - Wednesday 120201

We are still in the “Florida Like” weather here in the Upstate of SC.

Normally in January we get some seriously cold weather often with the moderate amounts of snow, or freezing rain etc. And tomorrow is “Ground Hog Day” at least that’s the word of the Old Farmer’s Almanac and they’ve not been wrong since 1792 – or at least that’s what the cover says was their founding date.

However at this juncture (you know there’s a lecture coming when some pontificator comes along with that word – he’s trying to impress rather than inform) I’m just looking to see what will happen if we don’t start getting some serious winter WX up here next to the Blue Ridge? Oh well… there’s nothing for me to do about it other than think about a peach season with no (or very few peaches. This part of South Carolina I’m told, produces and ships more ‘fresh’ (as contrasted with canned or frozen or otherwise shipped) peaches than the whole state of Georgia. Of course Georgia somehow cornered all the early P/R men once the peach orchards in Georgia started producing and they have ‘snatched’ the Peachtree label for themselves.  What at shame!

Well – no use dreaming about those wonderful free stone Georgia belles that also snapped up the good titles for peaches like freestone etc. Were the peach farmers in South Carolina simply asleep at the switch – or because of the lower latitude simply taking repose?  The question will remain unanswered at least for the present.

So we are entering a long phase of the political desert. No we won’t be suffering from a draught of political news… the opposite will be true. We have far more political information than we can pack and ship – and I indeed wish it would be – maybe they don’t have enough on the west coast (sometimes called the ‘left’ coast. As a matter of conjecture – perhaps it was instigated in the lower East Coast – make that below the Savannah river border – that cemented the ‘Peachtree’ title on the state just south of South Carolina.

Well…it’s too late in the day to worry about it now. I shall just have to live with the shortage through another fruit season… but I do hope we will have cool (i.e. below 30 degrees Fahrenheit hours) of sufficient number to cause the fruit and other crops of delicious southland products to properly flourish. I just hate the thought of going through the coming summer with all the political hot err... ah ,,, warmed air causing the frost not to nip the buds of South Carolina OR Georgia so we shall have a peachless season – as we have had before. It would be a sort of ‘fruit calamity of the first order. So let us importune our Heavenly Father who made and makes all things good.

We had a 13 inch snowfall in March a few years back which snafu’ed I-85 for about three days.  So… we can have snow sometimes when we *don’t * want – I just  DON”T want to have to undergo a peachless Summer, Lord.

Well… enough damage for today. May the Lord bless us all.

In Him,

Jack
